The event at Menara Kinabalu solidified the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between Oriole Hydro Padas Sdn Bhd (OHP) represented by its Chief Executive Officer Saridah Mohd Dun and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd represented by its Chief Executive Officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar. It also saw the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contract between OHP represented by Saridah and a consortium led by XD Power Transmission Sdn Bhd represented by PT Anhe Konstruksi Indonesia dan Anhe Hydropower Engineering Sdn Bhd Vice President Lei Yunbiao. The ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. Project Oriole, located at Hulu Sungai Padas in Sipitang, is one of the largest private sector renewable energy investments in the State, directly supporting Sabah's Energy Roadmap 2040 and its economic development ambitions. 'This milestone underscores our dedication to advancing Sabah's Energy Roadmap 2040 and reflects our confidence in delivering affordable, green infrastructure that benefits both the State and its people,' said Jentayu Sustainables Berhad Executive Chairman Datuk Beroz Nikmal Mirdin. The hydropower project is a collaborative effort between said Jentayu Sustainables Berhad, Sabah Electricity and Yayasan Sabah, ensuring that long-term benefits remain within the State. It holds the distinction of being the first new plant-up PPA signed under the Energy Commission of Sabah, reflecting the State's ongoing efforts to meet growing electricity demands. With a 40-year concession agreement, the project is scheduled to start commercial operations by June 1, 2029. It will deliver renewable energy at a competitive tariff of 31.5 sen per kilowatt-hour, making it one of the most affordable green energy initiatives. Present were State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, Yayasan Sabah Director Datuk Sri Gulamhaidar Yusof Khan Bahadar and Sabah Electricity Chairman Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, among others. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? FSI urges delay in SST expansion over SME cost concerns

Published on: Friday, June 27, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 27, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI) has raised concerns over the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) scope effective July 1, warning it could burden SMEs and fuel inflation in the state. FSI Treasurer Sylvester Chua ( pic ) said Sabah businesses are already operating under higher costs than those in the peninsula, with the SST expansion likely to increase prices for consumers. While welcoming the Sales Tax exemption on apples and oranges, Chua said local businesses need more time to manage their costs before additional taxes are introduced. He also pointed to the upcoming 2 per cent EPF contribution for foreign workers in October as another pressure point, warning it could strain manufacturers' cash flow during peak operational months. FSI has urged the government to delay the SST expansion to Jan 1, 2026 and consider tax exemptions on essential raw materials to ease the transition for Sabah's SMEs. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Youths urged to seize on juicy opportunity to develop pineapple industry: LPNM

Published on: Friday, June 27, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 27, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. JOHOR BAHRU: Youths are urged to seize the golden opportunity to venture into the growing pineapple industry and become a key contributor to the country's agri-food sector. Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali said youth participation could inject fresh ideas to advance the industry and sector to greater heights. "Youth involvement can generate lucrative income for themselves and inject new ideas to elevate this industry, especially in adapting technology including the Internet of Things (IoT), mechanisation and modern approaches," he said at the 2025 Malaysian Pineapple Day celebration here today. Also present at the event was Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. Sheikh Umar also reiterated LPNM's aspiration to target an income of RM10,000 for farmers under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). He said that according to unofficial data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the pineapple industry this year is projected to yield returns of up to RM8,000 per farmer. Regarding today's programme, he shared that the Malaysian Pineapple Day celebration themed 'Our Pineapple, Our Pride' today was being held for the first time to coincide with World Pineapple Day, observed annually on June 27. He said the event aims to celebrate pineapple farmers and industry players as well as commemorate the board's existence since 1957. Therefore, he hoped that the celebration would further energise the agri-food sector which contributes to the national economy. "This tropical fruit is certainly not a staple food but it can contribute to the balance of trade of the country's food sector which currently shows imports exceeding exports," he said, stating that the event will be held biennially. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
