‘I was covered in blood': Lakeland woman recovering after shooting on I-4
LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — Trinity Ramos, 23, of Lakeland, said she remembers everything about being shot at on I-4 but does not know who did it or why.
'There were no thoughts other than surviving,' Ramos said.
Truck drives off bridge into creek in Gibsonton
In a split second, she went from excited to get home to her fiance from work to fighting for her life.
'I usually wear a white uniform with khaki pants,' Ramos said. 'It was all red. I was covered in blood.'
Ramos was driving her Orkin work truck westbound on I-4 at around 3:45 Wedneday afternoon near the State Road 559 exit to Polk City and Auburndale when a bullet shattered her driver's side window.
It tore apart the hat she was wearing and grazed her skull.
Ramos was able to pull over safely.
'Tried to flag someone down but no one stopped so I said, 'Ok let's assess the situation'. I looked in the mirror, found where I was bleeding from and it was from my head,' said Ramos.
She said she used a shirt to stop the bleeding and called 911.
Deputies arrived and kept her calm.
'They took care of me. They said 'we're gonna get you outta here. You're not gonna die',' said Ramos. 'I said, ok we got this. We're gonna do this. I'm gonna live and here I am.'
Ramos has 17 staples in her head, scratches on her face and is in a decent amount of pain.
'The bullet did not enter my skull, surprisingly. They said it was a miracle,' said Ramos.
'Fractions of an inch, she would have been dead,' said Sheriff Grady Judd.
Sheriff Judd said his deputies have studied the terrain where Ramos was shot.
'We have no reason to believe based upon the evidence we see that it was someone on the side of the road,' Judd said. 'What we highly suspect was that it was someone eastbound that was involved in a road rage incident or simply fired a firearm.'
Both Sheriff Judd and Ramos said they hope somebody comes forward with information.
'I think whoever did this,' Ramos said. 'I think they should really think about their life decisions and how they could work on themselves to better themselves and take a breath. It's not about the destination. It's about the journey.'
Anybody with information is urged to contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 863-298-6200.

LI man found in pool identified as suspect in father's murder
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) — The body of the man found in a pool in a Long Island home last month has been identified as Matthew Zoll, who was wanted for killing his father, police said Tuesday. Zoll, 33, was found dead in a pool at a Shoreham home on May 25, authorities said. The cause of death remained unclear. The father, Joseph Zoll, 61, was found stabbed at his home at 30 Quail Rd. in November 2024, officials said. He died at the hospital. The younger Zoll was wearing the same clothing he had on when he was last seen. The home where he was found is also close to where he was involved in a single-vehicle crash the night of the murder, authorities said. Detectives believe Matthew Zoll was injured after he crashed a black GMC Yukon SUV at the intersection of 25A and the William Floyd Parkway on Nov. 9, 2024, at approximately 1:35 a.m., authorities said. School teacher tries arranging sex acts with 9-year-old in Florida, feds say
A third grade teacher in the Tampa Bay area tried arranging sex acts with a 9-year-old girl while messaging someone he believed was their parent, according to federal prosecutors in Central Florida. When Lee Hughes, 45, of Pinellas Park, went to an 'agreed-upon location' on May 1 to meet with the child for sex acts, he was instead arrested as part of an undercover sting operation, prosecutors said. Hughes taught at Pinellas Preparatory Academy, WFLA-TV reported. The school announced on May 2 that Hughes was 'immediately terminated' in connection with his arrest. Before he was taken into custody, Hughes had been communicating with an undercover officer since June 2024 and repeatedly shared his desire to sexually abuse the undercover officer's 'purported' 9-year-old daughter, according to federal court filings. Now Hughes faces federal child exploitation charges. A superseding indictment charges Hughes with attempted transmission of harmful material to a minor, attempted enticement or coercion of a minor and receipt and possession of child sexual abuse material, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida said in a June 9 news release. Hughes' court-appointed federal public defender, Regine Soraya Lauren Etienne, didn't immediately return McClatchy News' request for comment June 10. In a motion seeking Hughes' pretrial detention, prosecutors wrote 'Hughes is currently employed as a third-grade teacher, which is the same age of child as he was attempting to coerce and entice over the past ten months to engage in illicit sexual activity with him.' On May 9, Hughes was ordered detained ahead of trial by U.S. Magistrate Judge Amanda Arnold Sansone, court records show. While messaging the undercover officer, Hughes sent them about 10 sexually explicit photos and videos of himself and asked the officer to show the images to their decoy daughter, according to prosecutors. In videos Hughes shared, prosecutors wrote in court documents that he was heard speaking with a noticeable British accent. Though he now lives in Pinellas County, Hughes is initially from the United Kingdom, according to prosecutors. 'Hughes had ample opportunity to cease his communications with the undercover officer regarding his desired sexual abuse of a nine-year-old child; however, Hughes persisted,' court documents say. On Hughes' cell phone, law enforcement discovered he had exchanged child sexual abuse material, according to prosecutors. If Hughes is convicted of all charges, he would face a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and up to life in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Concerns or suspicions about child sexual exploitation can be reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's CyberTipline online or by calling 1-800-843-5678.
