Harvard under fire for hosting Pakistan conference after Pahalgam terror attack

Time of India29-04-2025

TOI correspondent from Washington
: Harvard University's South Asia Institute, bankrolled by
Indian billionaire Laxmi Mittal
, distanced itself from a "Pakistan conference" it platformed on Sunday after a backlash from some Indian students, even as Pakistan, embarrassed over having to use an Indian-funded facility, vowed to regain its diminishing footprint in
US academia
.
Controversy over the one-day conference erupted after two Indian students, Surabhi Tomar and Abhishek Chaudhuri, in a letter to the university management, urged Harvard to "ensure its campus does not become a platform for whitewashing state-enabled
religious terrorism
" in the aftermath of the
Pahalgam terrorist attack
that killed 26 people.
'Welcoming representatives of a government that enables or justifies terrorism risks Harvard being complicit. The United States must not host representatives of a state that protects and promotes organisations targeting civilians based on faith,' the students said in a separate letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Pakistan's finance minister Muhammed Aurangazeb and its ambassador to US Rizwan Shaeed Sheikh were among the delegates to the conference.

Among other demands, the students urged the Harvard management to issue a public statement condemning the Pahalgam attack and provide emotional and institutional support to affected students, seeking, "clarity, courage, and compassion for Hindu and Indian students grieving the targeted killing of members of their faith."
An administrator at the South Asia Institute told TOI that the conference was organized by Pakistani students and the institute did not host it beyond providing "some support."
However, the Institute's executive director, Hitesh Hathi, took part in a discussion with Pakistani historian Ayesha Jalal on "The Enlightened Muslim: Examining the intersection of religion, modernity, and state formation in Pakistan." The Institute later scrubbed the conference and the panel discussion from its website, a link showing the message, " The page you requested could not be found."
While some Indian students expressed anger at Harvard and SAI platforming the event, others mocked the Pakistani effort, ridiculing a country that is so broke that it required an Indian billionaire to platform its conference. Although organized by Pakistani students at Harvard, the conference, according to some attendees, was also ostensibly aimed at rejuvenating the country's diminishing footprint in US academia.
Among others, Hamid Mir, a prominent Pakistani journalist who was a delegate at the conference and also reported on it, repeatedly invoked the Indian clout in US academia, leading Pakistan's ambassador to the US to pledge that Islamabad would work to restore several Pakistan chairs that were defunct, including the Quaid e Azam chair at Columbia University.
According to Open Doors, which tracks foreign student inflow into the US. Pakistan currently has 10,988 students enrolled in American higher education institutions, compared to 331,602 students from India, the highest among all countries, followed by China at 277,398. Even Bangladesh (17,099) and Nepal (16,742) have more students in the US than Pakistan, whose international reputation has suffered on account of hosting terrorist groups and purported use terrorism as a policy instrument.

Giriraj Singh calls LoP Rahul Gandhi ‘useless person' amid Bihar visit, says ‘his tongue is like Pakistan'

Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticised Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday, calling him "useless" and alleging that he questioned the Indian army. 'Rahul Gandhi opposed India's valour, questioned its Army's bravery, and tarnished the army's reputation worldwide,' ANI quoted Giriraj Singh. Further elaborating his statement, Singh said, 'PM Modi isn't being insulted. Did the army win in 1971, or did Indira ji win? It's the army that won. Atal ji was in the opposition, and he said there's no party now, only Bharat. And this useless person (Rahul Gandhi) is mocking and making fun of the nation's bravery and the army. Such a person should be boycotted.' Rahul Gandhi is expected to address the 'Constitution Conference' and participate in multiple programs in Bihar today, ANI reported. Calling out the visit of the Congress leader, the Union Minister said, 'The Bihar public will oppose him, why would they vote for someone who doesn't respect the army or the nation? Rahul Gandhi's tongue is like Pakistan, and he does not respect the nation." In May, Rahul Gandhi interacted with students in Darbhanga and discussed key issues such as caste census and reservation. He visited Ambedkar Hostel in Darbhanga to deliver an address even after the Bihar Police denied him permission, resulting in a case filed against him by the district administration. During his earlier visit, Rahul Gandhi urged the need for a caste census, while highlighting the importance of social justice. Gandhi's current visit comes ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, where the ruling National Democratic Alliance , led by the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) and the BJP, the Mahagathbandhan or the Grand Alliance) comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the INC, and other parties, are the main contenders. The last assembly elections were conducted in three phases from October to November 2020. The National Democratic Alliance secured 125 seats in the previous elections. The BJP won 74 seats, and the JD(U) obtained 43 seats. Meanwhile, the Mahagathbandhan, consisting of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and Left parties, secured 110 seats in the 243-seat legislative assembly.

Simla Agreement not 'dead document'? Pak fact-checks its defence minister

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry Office had to fact-check the country's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif after he stirred headlines by calling the 1972 Simla Agreement with India a 'dead document.' read more Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif gestures on the day of an interview with Reuters in Islamabad, Pakistan April 28, 2025. File Image/Reuters Pakistan had to fact-check yet another goof made by the country's Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif , about the future of the 1972 Simla Agreement and other bilateral agreements with India. On Thursday, the Pakistani foreign ministry stated that no formal decision has been made to scrap any agreements with India, including the Simla Agreement. The statement came a day after Pakistan's Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, declared the Simla Agreement to be irrelevant, calling it a 'dead document' due to India's recent action, calling out the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. 'The Simla Agreement is now a dead document. We are back to the 1948 position,' Asif said, referencing the Line of Control (LoC) as a ceasefire line established after the first India-Pakistan war. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While speaking to The Express Tribune, a senior official from the Pakistani foreign office noted that while India's decision to put the Indus Waters Treaty to abeyance prompted internal discussion, there have been no formal announcements that the bilateral treaties between the two nations have been annulled. 'At present, there is no formal decision to terminate any bilateral accord,' the official told the Pakistani news outlet, insisting that the existing bilateral agreements, including the Simla Agreement, remain in effect.' Asif's goof While speaking on the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions, Asif commented on the future of bilateral agreements between the two nations. 'Whether the Indus Waters Treaty is suspended or not, Simla is already over,' Asif remarked, reflecting Pakistan's frustration with India's decision to put the Indus Waters Treaty on hold. The remarks by Asif raised many questions about the validity of the 1972 agreement. The agreement between the Government of India and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on Bilateral Relations, also known as the Simla Agreement, was signed in July 1972 between then-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her Pakistani counterpart Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The agreement was signed following Pakistan's comprehensive defeat in the 1971 war, which eventually led to the independence of Bangladesh. The agreement was expected to lay the foundation of a peaceful and stable relationship between the two nations. The deal emphasises resolving issues between the two in a bilateral manner, superseding the UN's resolution on Kashmir. The fact that there has been only a limited war since the agreement was signed reflects its effectiveness. The agreement stressed that nations go back to the Line of Control (LoC) and respect the region. Tensions between India and Pakistan have been all-time high since the Pahalgam terror attack rocked a tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 people. The main perpetrators of the attack remain at large. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Judicial Custody Of Tahawwur Rana Extended, Court Seeks Health Report From Tihar Authorities

Last Updated: During the hearing, Tahawwur Rana personally addressed the court, requesting a hearing aid due to a medical issue affecting his ears. Delhi's Patiala Court on Friday extended the judicial custody of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the main accused in the deadly 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, till July 9. Rana was produced before the court via video conferencing at the end of his earlier custody period and Special Judge Chander Jit Singh passed the order. The court hearing raised concerns about Rana's health while in judicial custody. In response, Judge Jit Singh instructed Tihar authorities to submit a status report on the individual's health by June 9. During the hearing, Tahawwur Rana personally addressed the court, requesting a hearing aid due to a medical issue affecting his ears. The same court has scheduled a hearing for June 9 to consider Rana's plea for permission to communicate with his family members while in judicial custody. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently obtained voice and handwriting samples from Rana, who was extradited to India from the US. He provided handwriting specimens by writing various alphabets and numerical characters. Advocate Piyush Sachdev, his legal aid counsel, confirmed that Rana fully complied with the court's directive to submit these samples. The Special NIA Court has previously allowed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to obtain voice and handwriting samples of 26/11 mastermind Tahawwur Rana. The 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, perpetrated by 10 Pakistani terrorists, claimed 166 lives in a nearly 60-hour siege targeting iconic sites like the Taj and Oberoi hotels, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and Nariman House, a Jewish centre.
