Sedona Prince goes undrafted in 2025 WNBA Draft amid allegations of abuse

Express Tribune15-04-2025

TCU centre Sedona Prince was not selected in the 2025 WNBA Draft, despite early projections placing her in the first or second round, as allegations of abuse and doubts about her age and injury history overshadowed her on-court profile.
The 2025 WNBA Draft concluded Monday with several top NCAA prospects landing spots in the league — but Sedona Prince, a 6-foot-7 centre from TCU, was not among them. Once seen as a likely first-round selection, Prince's draft stock plummeted amid controversy and concerns, leaving her undrafted.
Prince, 24, faced scrutiny not only due to her age — she turns 25 in May — but also because of allegations of abuse from multiple former partners. Four women have accused her of misconduct since 2019, including two alleging sexual abuse and two accusing her of physical violence.
While no official action was taken by TCU, a petition to remove her from the team gathered over 200,000 signatures. Prince remained with the Horned Frogs and helped guide them to their first Elite Eight appearance, averaging 15 points per game during the tournament run.
Still, questions persisted. An anonymous WNBA general manager told ESPN that her age raised doubts about her dominance at the college level: 'She's like a 24-year-old playing against, what, sometimes 18-year-olds?... It's hard to tell, 'Are you that good, or just older?''
Prince began her college career in 2017 and has played across three programmes due to injury setbacks and NCAA waivers. Her long collegiate tenure, including a serious leg injury prior to her freshman year, added further concerns for professional teams.
Various sports sites had projected Prince as a late first-round pick. Instead, her TCU teammates Hailey Van Lith and Madison Conner were drafted by Chicago and Seattle, respectively. Prince, however, was left without a team.
Her strong performances in March Madness, including a 21-point outing against Notre Dame, were not enough to outweigh the controversy. In her final appearance, she fouled out in the fourth quarter of TCU's loss to Texas, scoring just four points.
No team ultimately took a chance on Prince, despite unnamed GMs expressing interest. Her absence from the draft board suggests teams viewed the risk as too high — regardless of her talent.

Simone Biles claps back at Riley Gaines over transgender athlete comments in women's sports debate

A heated exchange between Olympic gymnastics champion Simone Biles and former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines has reignited debate over transgender inclusion in women's sports. The clash followed a social media post in which Gaines mocked a youth softball team for featuring a transgender player and criticized moderators for disabling comments. 'To be expected when your star player is a boy,' Gaines wrote in a quote tweet, referencing the child athlete. The remark drew swift backlash from Biles, who condemned Gaines' behavior in a post to her nearly two million followers. 'You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race,' Biles wrote, referencing Gaines' shared fifth-place finish with transgender swimmer Lia Thomas at the 2022 NCAA Championships. Biles continued, calling Gaines a 'sore loser' and urging her to advocate for inclusivity rather than target transgender athletes. 'You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive or creating a new avenue where trans feel safe,' she added. 'Instead, you bully them.' Gaines, now an outspoken conservative activist, quickly responded. She dismissed Biles' history of mental health advocacy and called her a 'male-apologist at the expense of young girls' dreams,' before sarcastically suggesting Biles compete in men's gymnastics events like the pommel horse and rings. Since her NCAA career, Gaines has become a prominent figure in the anti-trans sports movement, testifying before Congress, suing the NCAA, and launching an advocacy group focused on what she describes as 'fairness' in women's athletics. She has gained support from conservative political figures, including U.S. President Donald Trump. In contrast, Biles has consistently used her platform to advocate for athlete safety, mental health, and accountability in gymnastics, especially in the wake of the Larry Nassar abuse scandal. Their public conflict highlights a deepening divide over the future of inclusion in sports.

Sky vs Sparks 78-91: Is Angel Reese on her way out of Chicago? Star admits it's 'tough' losing 3-in-a-row

The Chicago Sky's tough start to the 2025 WNBA season continued on Sunday as they fell to the Los Angeles Sparks 91-78, marking their third consecutive loss. After a season-opening defeat to the Indiana Fever and another setback in their home opener against the New York Liberty, Chicago remains winless with an 0-3 record. Despite the defeat, the Sky found a silver lining in Angel Reese's standout performance at Arena. The 2024 WNBA All-Star had struggled in the first two games of the season, shooting just five-for-22 from the field. However, on Sunday, Reese bounced back in a major way, finishing with a double-double: 13 points and 12 rebounds, alongside four assists and two steals. She also shot a more efficient 5-for-11 from the field. Following the game, Chicago made an announcement on social media, naming Reese the Player of the Game. 'Double double for 5️⃣‼️,' the team posted, accompanied by a graphic of Reese's stats. Despite their overall struggles, Reese's effort was a bright spot for the Sky, who sit in last place in the Eastern Conference. Post-match, Reese was visibly frustrated with the game. Her demeanor in the post-match press conference led many to believe she might be looking at her WNBA future elsewhere. Chicago finished at the bottom of the East in 2024 and is hoping to turn things around under new head coach Tyler Marsh. With the season still in its early stages, the Sky will be looking for their first win on Tuesday against the Phoenix Mercury. While their 0-3 record remains concerning, Reese's bounce-back performance offers a glimmer of hope for the team moving forward.

Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese saga: WNBA investigating claims of 'inappropriate fan conduct'

The WNBA has launched a formal investigation into alleged hateful remarks directed at Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese — and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark is speaking out. During a pre-game shootaround Monday ahead of the Fever's clash with the Atlanta Dream, Clark addressed the controversy that erupted after their dominant 93-58 win over the Sky on Saturday, May 17. In the game, Reese made a foul which many saw as a 'cheap shot' and an obvious attempt to foul-play Clark. Angel Reese may be the most petty, insufferable athlete in sports right now… Her jealously for Caitlin Clark has made her act a fool on and off the court. — Jon Root (@JonnyRoot_) May 17, 2025 The incident, which took place after the foul and has since been unspecified publicly, reportedly involved "inappropriate fan conduct" that prompted swift reaction from the league. 'There's no place for that in our game,' Clark said via the Indy Star. 'There's no place for that in society. Certainly, we want every person that comes into our arena — whether player or fan — to have a great experience.' The WNBA condemned 'racism, hate and discrimination in all forms' in its statement on Sunday, confirming that the matter is being looked into under its "No Space for Hate" initiative, launched earlier this season. The campaign includes a revised fan code of conduct and AI-powered tools to monitor and address online abuse in real time. Clark expressed support for the league's efforts: 'I appreciate the league doing that. The Fever organization has been at the forefront since day one. Hopefully the investigation finds anything that needs to be addressed, and the proper action is taken.' Pacers Sports & Entertainment CEO Mel Raines affirmed the organization's stance in a statement: 'We are working closely with the WNBA to complete their investigation. We stand firm in our commitment to providing a safe environment for all WNBA players.' The Women's National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) also weighed in, calling such behavior 'unacceptable' and voicing confidence in the league to respond appropriately. This isn't the first time tensions have flared between Clark and Reese — two of the league's most-watched rookies — but this incident has drawn widespread attention not only for the rivalry, but for the broader cultural conversations surrounding the game. The WNBA's updated code of conduct now explicitly bans racist, sexist, homophobic, or threatening content, both in arenas and on social platforms. Fans found violating these rules may be blocked from digital platforms or banned from attending league events altogether. Direct threats may even be escalated to law enforcement. With the spotlight growing on the WNBA like never before, the league's swift response underscores its evolving approach to player safety and fan accountability — both on the court and online.
