Army expedition team scales 2 peaks in Ladakh as tribute to Galwan martyrs

Hindustan Times4 hours ago

Leh, A strong 28-member mountaineering expedition team of the Army successfully scaled over the 22,000-feet Mount Shahi Kangri and Mount Silver Peak on the Karakoram ranges in the Union Territory of Ladakh, a Defence spokesman said.
The team with exceptional icecraft and rockcraft skills, selected and trained for high altitude endurance, left on May 28 to honour the brave soldiers of Ladakh who made the supreme sacrifice during the 2020 Galwan conflict, the spokesman said.
After scaling the 22,749-feet Mount Shahi Kangri and 22,543-feet Mount Silver Peak, the historic mountaineering expedition was flagged off on Wednesday by General Officer Commanding of Leh-based Fire and Fury Corps, Lt Gen Hitesh Bhalla, he said.
The spokesman said the expedition showcases the physical, technical and mental excellence of military personnel and also promotes high-altitude expeditions in remote areas that offer challenging terrain and fabulous views for mountaineers.
Mount Shahi Kangri and Mount Silver Peak lie in the southwest direction of the Depsang Plains, which is one of the most challenging regions of Ladakh, he said.
He said these mountains are snowbound throughout the year and they present severe terrain and climatic hardships.
With meticulous planning and training, the expedition team approached the peaks from the southeasterly direction. This reduced the overall distance of the summit involved navigating through some of the most treacherous terrains filled with crevasses, cornice and glaciers, the spokesman said.
He said the Army adventure wing has approved and recognised the expedition plan for its significance.
In addition to achieving the challenging milestone, the expedition also serves to attract civil mountaineering expedition teams in the future to participate in scaling these twin peaks, thus promoting adventure tourism in Ladakh, the spokesman said.
He said the expedition concluded with the presentation of the expedition flag and ice axe by the team to the GOC of Fire and Fury Corps.
Participants shared their experience during the challenging expedition, the spokesman said, adding the expedition is a true homage to the Galwan bravehearts, as it proves that nothing is impossible for the Indian Army.

USWNT's latest roster features new players while Europe-based stars take a break

With U.S. coach Emma Hayes giving many of her Europe-based players a break, there were several new faces on the national team Wednesday for a trio of upcoming matches against Ireland and Canada. Lindsey Heaps, Catarina Macario and Emily Fox were among the players given time off after the European season. One exception was defender Naomi Girma, who is working her way back from a calf injury. The United States plays Ireland on June 26 in Commerce City, Colorado, and again on June 29 in Cincinnati. The team plays Canada on July 2 in Washington, D.C. The roster includes four players who have been called up to the national team for the first time: defenders Jordyn Bugg, Lilly Reale and Izzy Rodriguez, and midfielder Sam Meza. Six players on the 25-player roster have not yet appeared in a game for the senior national team. Hayes, who took over as national team coach last year, has been looking at new players as she prepares the team for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. She has given 27 players their first national team call-ups. 'We want to continue to improve our understanding of how we want to play and widen the player pool, and those are some of the key goals of this three-game window,' Hayes said in a statement Wednesday. 'On this roster, we have players with a varied amount of experience, and my priority is to deepen the exposures required for international soccer. These are three challenging matches and as always, we want to win, but also to make sure we are ready for the next steps.' One veteran player who is on the roster is midfielder Rose Lavelle, who hasn't played for the national team in more than six months after having ankle surgery. Lavelle recently returned to play for her club team, Gotham FC, in the National Women's Soccer League. U.S. roster: Goalkeepers: Angelina Anderson , Claudia Dickey Mandy McGlynn Defenders: Kerry Abello , Jordyn Bugg , Naomi Girma , Lilly Reale , Tara McKeown , Avery Patterson , Izzy Rodriguez , Emily Sams , Emily Sonnett , Gisele Thompson Midfielders: Croix Bethune , Sam Coffey , Claire Hutton , Rose Lavelle , Sam Meza , Olivia Moultrie Forwards: Lynn Biyendolo , Michelle Cooper , Yazmeen Ryan , Emma Sears , Ally Sentnor , Alyssa Thompson soccer: /hub/soccer

FIFA lifts transfer ban on ISL club Mohun Bagan Super Giants

Football's global governing body FIFA has lifted the transfer ban on Mohun Bagan Super Giant on Tuesday clearing the way for the club to sign new players for the upcoming season. The ban was imposed on May 5 over non-payment of dues to the Australian striker Jason Cummings' former club Central Coast Mariners of Australia. It took just more than a month to revoke the ban as the club acted proactively. Mohun Bagan had submitted a 107-page document to FIFA and responded to two subsequent queries from the governing body. 'Mohun Bagan submitted a 107-page document to FIFA and thereafter there were two queries, and finally the disciplinary committee has sent a mail lifting the ban,' a Mohun Bagan Super Giant official told PTI. Unlike Mumbai City FC, whose similar ban took nearly three months to be lifted, Mohun Bagan managed to resolve the issue within a month. The news comes days after a new president Debasish Dutta and general secretary Srinjoy Bose took charge of the club. However, the ban did not significantly impact the club as the summer transfer window opened last week on June 9, giving them plenty of time to build on the team for the coming ISL season. Mohun Bagan will also be able to feature in the continental tournament this year after they had to pull out last time due to a ban by the AFC. The continental body had sanctioned a fine and banned the Kolkata-based club from the AFC Champions League 2 after the team decided to withdraw from a league match in Iran citing concerns related to the political tensions in the Middle East between Isarel and Iran. The Indian club withdrew from the match against Tractor SC and didn't travel to the city of Tabriz inviting ban from AFC under the competition regulations.
