Deputy CM directs Excise dept. officials to identify and plug revenue leakages

The Hindu12-05-2025

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has directed the Excise department officials to identify and rectify revenue leakages in the department so that its income can be enhanced.
The Deputy Chief Minister said although good progress was achieved in the sale of apartments and flats, the expected momentum was lacking in the sale of agriculture lands and open plots. He wanted the officials concerned to analyse the situation and take appropriate action.
Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Sub Committee on resource mobilisation on Monday. Cabinet sub committee members N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, D. Sridhar Babu and Jupally Krishna Rao were present in the meeting attended by senior officials led by Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao.
The Cabinet panel expressed satisfaction over the 6% growth achieved by the Commercial Taxes department at the end of the previous financial year as compared to 2023-24 describing it as a positive development. The department set a target of ₹600 crore through CST and VAT in March and realised ₹500 crore. 'There is a need for a well-structured plan moving forward,' he said.
The Cabinet panel members wanted the newly introduced Automatic Number Plate Recognition system to be widely implemented across various departments enabling conduct of large scale inspections. The Tribal Welfare department was directed to ensure that sand sales in tribal areas were conducted through tribal societies by identifying and enrolling genuine beneficiaries as members. The effort was to ensure that genuine tribals received the income through sand sales in the agency areas.
The Ministers instructed Revenue department officials to identify valuable government lands in district headquarters and take steps to protect them. The HMDA was advised to expedite the process for issuing construction permits.

India-UK free trade deal likely to be inked by July-end; commerce secretary in London to expedite process

The free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom is on track for signing by the end of July, a top official said on Tuesday. To give impetus to the process, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal is in London with his official team. Barthwal has planned to meet UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds and other British senior officials during his two-day visit to London, PTI reported. The UK and India announced the conclusion of the negotiations on May 6. The trade deal will remove taxes on the export of labour-intensive products such as leather, footwear and clothing, while making imports of whisky and cars from Britain cheaper. This deal aims to double trade between the two economies to $120 billion by 2030. The world's fifth and sixth-largest economies are signing the deal after three years of on-and-off negotiations. Once the FTA is signed, it is compulsory to be approved by the British Parliament and India's Cabinet before it can take effect. The proper implementation is likely to take about a year after the signing. The agreement is likely to be signed by the end of July. India's legal team is also there in London for the legal scrubbing of the text. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently invited UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to India.

Kanwar committees will get funds up to Rs 10 lakh through Direct Benefit Transfer: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta

With the annual Kanwar pilgrimage set to begin next month, the Delhi Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, on Tuesday approved 'Mukhyamantri Dharmik Samiti', under which the government will provide funds up to Rs 10 lakh to registered Kanwar Yatra committees through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). 'The Cabinet has taken a historic decision. The previous government only committed corruption in the name of providing facilities to the Kanwar Yatris,' said Gupta, addressing a press conference. The Mukhyamantri Dharmik Samiti comprises four MLAs and is led by Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra. The registration process will start on Tuesday. She said the system has been implemented to curb corruption and provide better facilities so that the committees will oversee the arrangements of the pilgrimage and work for the Shiv devotees. CM Gupta criticised the previous government, stating that during its tenure, the AAP government would issue tenders, selecting one or two people while spending crores of rupees. However, she pointed out that, in reality, the people did not benefit from these services. 'As it is the first time, the societies will be given time to apply till July 30. The Kanwar camps will be more than tents where proper medical facilities, a toilet block, sanitation, water, and security will be provided by the government. Electricity up to 1,200 units will be provided to the societies for free of cost. Civil defence volunteers and home guards will be deployed in all these camps,' said the CM. Under the new scheme, the chief minister said the committees are expected to double. 'Till last year, about 180 Kanwar committees used to set up tents and make arrangements for the yatris,' she said, adding that there will be a single window system monitored by the District Magistrates. The registered societies will apply to the DM office, and they will be selected on a first-come-first-serve basis. 'The application process and selection will be cleared within 72 hours. The committees will be provided minimum Rs 50,000 to up to maximum Rs 10 lakh by the government. It will be divided into four categories as per the capacity of the tents and arrangements. The government will provide 50 per cent of the payment first and the remaining amount after the completion of the event,' said Gupta. She also said that the societies will have to submit the bills, and the payments will be done in three months. The Delhi Government is working on new policies following the principles of the minimum government and maximum governance, said CM Gupta. During the Kanwar pilgrimage, Shiva devotees, known as Kanvarias or Bhole, travel to Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Gangotri in Uttarakhand to collect water from the Ganga River and pour the sacred water over the Shiva Linga at their local temples.
