LUCKNOW: Four people were killed and three others critically injured when a truck rammed into their MUV on the Bahraich highway near Dhanaura village under Ramnagar police station limits.
The incident occurred around 7:30 am when the victims were returning from a wedding ceremony in Kanpur.
The car occupants Rajveer Kushwaha (35), his wife Shanti Singh (32) and brother-in-law Ramashankar Maurya (40) of Khiramba village and driver Ayan Qureshi (30) of Imam Bara, Gonda, died on the spot.
Three others — Rajveer's 6-year-old daughter Anvi Kushwaha, Ramashankar's wife Pooja Maurya (35) and their 9-year-old son Akshay alias Ayush — sustained serious injuries and were first rushed to CHC Ramnagar before being referred to the KGMU trauma centre in Lucknow due to their critical condition.
Rajveer's uncle, Anoop Kushwaha said that four cars were returning from the wedding when the last vehicle met with the accident. The truck involved was seized by police.
The family of the deceased couple alleged that jewellery and valuables worth over Rs5 lakh were stolen from the bodies of Rajveer and Shanti after the accident. Anoop said that only the jewellery belonging to Ramashankar Maurya was returned by the police, while that of Rajveer and Shanti remained missing.
To support the claim, Anoop presented wedding photos taken hours before the accident, showing the couple adorned with jewellery. A bag containing clothes was also reported missing.
Ramnagar SHO Anil Pandey said that when he reached the accident site, only Shanti and Pooja were found inside the car, and a youth who made the distress call was present. He confirmed that an inquiry would be conducted into the alleged theft of the jewellery and missing belongings.

Banned 7 Years Ago, Single-use Plastic Bags Still Flood City

Nagpur: Seven years after the ban on single-use plastic came into force in the state, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) continue to grapple with widespread violations, exposing the ineffectiveness of enforcement drives and a glaring lack of deterrence. Though prime responsibility of enforcing the ban on single-use plastic relies on MPCB, the board is taking least interest in implementing the diktat, issued on March 23, 2018. From 2018 to May 2025, NMC's nuisance detection squad (NDS) cracked down on over 1.66 lakh establishments, seizing over 75,000kg banned single-use plastic bags and collecting fines exceeding Rs2.68 crore. Yet, these bags remain a common sight across markets, kirana stores, and roadside vendors, a testament to the civic body's inability to enforce sustainable compliance. The trend-line in enforcement shows sharp inconsistencies. For instance, while 2019-20 saw the highest number of cases (1,276) and most plastic bags seizure (17,929kg), both the number of seizures and the quantity have drastically fallen in recent years, with just 1,728kg seized in 2024-25, despite 24,713 shops being checked. The drop is even more alarming for April and May 2025, with only 132kg seized in 1,783 inspections. The fact that despite thousands of inspections, only one FIR has been lodged since the ban, and no legal notices were issued since then, indicate a troubling over-reliance on fines with minimal legal escalation. While the number of shops checked in 2023-24 peaked at 56,458, the volume of seized plastic actually dropped to just 5,816kg, implying either lack of serious violations, which contradicts ground realities, or failure to act decisively when violations are found. A close look at NDS action in these years reveals most violations are taking place in areas under Gandhibagh and Satranjipura zones. Activists and citizens allege enforcement is often superficial and selective. "Plastic carry bags are openly used in markets like Itwari, Mahal, and Sakkardara. NMC's actions are largely cosmetic — they raid for a few days, then disappear," said an environmental campaigner. Officials admit that a lack of sustained public awareness, weak penalties, and limited manpower have crippled the campaign. "Retailers return to using plastic bags because alternatives are costlier, and there's no consistent follow-up. Without criminal prosecution or seizure of trade licenses, the problem will persist," said a senior officer. Ironically, 2023-24 and 2024-25 saw some of the highest inspection numbers, yet outcomes fell short. The deterrent value of penalties, averaging Rs5,000 per case, appears minimal, especially for wholesale traders and larger vendors. The civic body had earlier promised to develop a zero-tolerance zone model and promote cloth and paper bag alternatives in partnership with NGOs, but the initiative has not taken off. If the current pace continues, environmentalists fear that the city's plastic burden will only grow, choking drains and polluting the environment. Citizens have demanded that NMC intensify raids, escalate legal action, and support the plastic-free cause with genuine alternative solutions, not just numbers on paper. Environmentalist Leena Buddhe said NMC, like all other urban local bodies, has a significant role to play in enforcing the plastic ban to ensure effective plastic waste management. "Conducting regular inspections and drives to confiscate banned plastic bags and imposing heavy penalties is crucial to deter people from using them," she said. In a city aiming to be counted among 'Smart Cities', the continued failure to ban something as basic as single-use plastic remains a blot on civic governance, she said.

Toddler in Lko abducted while sleeping with parents, raped; culprit at large

A two-and-a-half-year-old girl was allegedly raped near the Alambagh Metro station in Lucknow, one of the busiest zones at due to the presence of the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). The victim, a daughter of pavement dwellers from Unnao, was picked up while she was sleeping next to her father and mother on the roadside early Thursday morning, police said. The accused is still absconding, and police teams have been formed to trace him. The child was found in a severely injured state, abandoned around 500 metres from the spot. Her cries were heard by a differently-abled man, who alerted her ragpicker parents. They were already searching for her after discovering her missing around 4 am. Notably, this incident occurred close to the site where a woman from Ayodhya was abducted and murdered after a failed sexual assault attempt by an e-rickshaw driver and his brother earlier in March. That case had also raised concerns about women's safety in the city. Doctors at King George's Medical University (KGMU) trauma centre said that the minor sustained grievous injuries to her private parts and requires urgent surgery. Her condition remains critical. Dr Rajiv Dixit, medical superintendent of Rajnarayan Lokbandhu Hospital, said the girl was first brought to their hospital at around 7:30 am. 'She was in pain and was immediately shifted to the emergency ICU. A team of specialists, including a gynaecologist, paediatrician, and surgeon, conducted initial assessments. Due to the severity of her condition, she was referred to KGMU by noon,' he added. Deputy commissioner of police (Central), Ashish Srivastava, confirmed that a first information report (FIR) was lodged at Alambagh police station, a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and POCSO sections 5(h) and 6 was registered. 'The family initially took the child to Lok Bandhu Hospital, where doctors confirmed rape and informed the One Stop Centre. Subsequently, the police were notified,' Srivastava said. 'Five police teams have been formed to track down the accused. Senior officials are monitoring the investigation on the ground,' he added. Archana Singh, in-charge of the One Stop Centre in Lucknow, said, 'As soon as our unit received the call from Lok Bandhu hospital, we rushed to the child and found her profusely bleeding with grave injuries to her lower body. One team went with the family to KGMU, while another accompanied the father to the police station to lodge the complaint.' The victim's father recounted that the family had eaten their dinner and settled on the roadside to sleep. 'We didn't even realise when she was taken. An elderly man informed us early in the morning about our child crying nearby,' he said. As per the FIR, the incident is suspected to have occurred between 2:30 am and 3 am. The location, a high-traffic zone near ISBT and the Metro bridge, has once again raised questions over Lucknow Police's claims of effective night patrolling. Madhu Garg of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) said, 'What can anyone say about this? People often blame women's clothing, but what was this two-and-a-half-year-old wearing to provoke such a crime? Crimes against minors are increasing while fear among criminals is vanishing.'

One dead, two injured as woman in car strikes several on footpath in Lucknow

A woman rashly driving a car struck several people, killing one and injuring two others on a footpath near Shia PG College in Lucknow on Tuesday afternoon, police said. Among the two injured, one is a 10-year-old, who was hospitalised. Around 3:30 pm, the speeding car first hit the extension of a cafeteria near the college and then ran over a bicyclist before hitting a street pole that brought it to a stop, police and eyewitnesses said. The incident was caught on CCTV, the footage of which has been doing the rounds on social media. 'Upon reaching the spot, police found out that the car (bearing registration number UP32KE0037) had veered off its path and climbed the footpath. It had struck people standing there before colliding with an electric pole,' said Lucknow police in their official statement. According to eyewitnesses, the woman was driving rashly, which resulted in the car losing control. 'It crashed into a pole, otherwise, it would have injured more people,' said one. Police said Tanu Gupta, 35, who lives in Saadatganj area of the city and works in the real estate sector, was driving the car. She was coming from the Daliganj Crossing when she struck people. Madyeganj SHO Rajesh Singh said, 'The woman was an experienced driver and had her driving licence as well. She was not under the influence of alcohol.' The SHO added an FIR had been registered under relevant sections of the BNS in the case. Police, with the assistance of locals, rushed the injured to the Balrampur Hospital. Virendra Pandey, 45, from Khadra succumbed to his injuries during treatment, said the statement. Pandey was a contract worker at KGMU. His brother Sunil Pandey said he was returning home from a market when he was run over. He is survived by his wife Saroj, son Krishna and daughter Anya Pandey. Daksh Sonkar, 10, who hails from Bansmandi Bhanu Tola on Sitapur Road and was under medical care, was one of the two people injured in the accident. The other is a woman, but was yet to be identified. She is believed to be a beggar. She sustained minor injuries in the mishap. Mujahid, an eyewitness, said: 'I was heading towards the crossing on my bicycle when I saw a car speeding down the other track. As I approached the gate of Shia PG College, I heard a loud noise. I stopped my bicycle and saw that the same car had run over several people. I rushed to the spot. One of the injured was being taken in an e-rickshaw, but he appeared to have died already. All of this happened within 3-4 minutes.' The car in question was seized and taken to a police station. Authorities confirmed that no law-and-order disturbance took place following the accident.
