Canada's women advance to quarterfinals at 3x3 basketball World Cup
The Canadian women had little trouble advancing the quarterfinals of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup tournament after a 18-6 victory over Japan on Friday in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Cassandra Brown led Canada's offence with eight points and five rebounds. Paige Crozon dominated the boards with 12 rebounds.
The Canadians will now will play Spain on Saturday, which will be live streamed on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem at 5:25 a.m. ET.
Crozon and Kacie Bosch have been playing with two new teammates in Brown and Saicha Grant-Allen.
Prior to this week's event, Grant-Allen played 49 games and Brown, a relative rookie at 26 games.
Katherine Plouffe and twin sister Michelle are both sidelined with schedule conflict and minor injuries.

Canadian men ousted
The Canadian men dropped two games Thursday to miss the playoff cut. France defeated Canada 21-18 in the early game. Aaron Rhooms and Grant Audu scored eight points apiece for the Canadians.
Puerto Rico beat Canada 21-17 later in the day. Jerome Desrosiers had eight points and four rebounds in the loss that left Canada at 1-3.
"I'm most proud of the way we fought," Desrosiers said. "This is a pretty young team in terms of 3x3 experience, so the way we stayed together throughout the whole experience is something to be proud of for sure."

Impaired driving charges dropped against former Halifax Mooseheads star
Charges against the Halifax Mooseheads' career points leader were dropped Friday after the Crown offered no evidence at trial. Jordan Dumais, who last suited up for the team a year ago, was charged after being pulled over by police in downtown Halifax at 2:20 a.m. AT on March 1, 2024. But on Friday, the Crown received word shortly before they were due in court that the investigating officer would not be attending. "As a result, the Crown determined that he could not proceed without the officer's testimony and offered no evidence," said Public Prosecution Service spokesperson Melissa Noonan in a statement. Dumais, now 21, is from the Montreal area. He was suspended from the Mooseheads for five games at the time the charge was filed. Defence lawyer Stan MacDonald entered a not-guilty plea on Dumais' behalf last July. He could not be reached for an interview. Dumais was a third-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022. He played for Team Canada at the 2024 world juniors in Sweden, but then underwent abdominal surgery in Columbus, Ohio, following the tournament. This season, Dumais played for the Cleveland Monsters in the American Hockey League, scoring four goals and seven assists in 21 games for the Blue Jackets' farm team. In November 2023, Dumais broke the Mooseheads' franchise point record. He ended his four seasons with the Mooseheads with 325 points.

Montreal Canadiens acquire defenceman Noah Dobson from New York Islanders
The Montreal Canadiens acquired offensive defenceman Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders, according to media reports. In return, the Islanders reportedly receive forward Emil Heineman and the 16th and 17th overall picks in Friday night's NHL draft. The Islanders also hold the top pick, with defenceman Matthew Schaefer expected to go first overall. Dobson, a 25-year-old from Summerside, P.E.I., produced 10 goals and 29 assists in 71 games last season. In 2023-24, the right-shot blueliner posted a career-high 70 points in 79 games, finishing second in scoring on the Islanders and seventh among NHL defencemen. Dobson, who was a pending restricted free agent, played all six of his NHL seasons on Long Island after being drafted 12th overall by the franchise in 2018.
