Micah makes case for No.1 spot as Matildas fall to USA

Yahoo24-02-2025

Teagan Micah is placing fresh pressure on Mackenzie Arnold's status as Australia's first-choice goalkeeper after an encouraging display in a credible 2-1 loss to the USA.
Micah pulled off several impressive saves in Monday's (AEDT) SheBelieves Cup clash at State Farm Stadium in Arizona that will prompt fresh discussion over Arnold's stranglehold on the No.1 jersey.
The 27-year-old Micah was not at fault for either of America's goals - the first of which came after just 43 seconds - and her reflexes kept Australia in the game right until the final whistle.

Lynn Biyendolo put the USA ahead inside the first minute, before a dogged Australian side made the home team fight for their second goal through Michelle Cooper soon after the hour mark.
Michelle Heyman headed home a delightful Hayley Raso cross in the 80th minute to give Australia hope of salvaging a draw.
And while the Matildas could not find an equaliser, some of Micah's late glove work prevented the USA from putting the game beyond doubt.
Remarkably the outing against the USA was just Micah's 18th senior cap, with ex-Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson having opted for Arnold as his No.1.
But with Micah playing regularly with Liverpool in the Women's Super League, caretaker Australia coach Tom Sermanni says the shot-stopper is making a compelling case to become the Matildas' first-choice keeper.
"It's been close (between Arnold and Micah) for some time (and) there's been times when Teagan has actually been the number one," Sermanni said.
"The situation at the moment is Teagan has been playing week in and week out in the WSL and performing really well.
"Mackenzie hasn't played and is barely back in pre-season training (with American club side Portland).
"Particularly for a goalkeeper - it's not like an outfield player where you can run around - they need to get matches under the belt before they come in at this level."
Sermanni said it was premature to indicate which way he would go for Australia's final game of the tournament on Thursday (AEDT) against Colombia.
The coach was encouraged by the Matildas' response after he labelled their performance "un-Australian" in their opening match of the tournament, a 4-0 loss to Japan.
"Our effort and attitude were so much better in this game, especially after the start we had," Sermanni said.
"Given the performance of the last game and the result and then losing the goal after probably less than a minute, I think we could easily have just sort of caved in today.
"So from a perspective of the team digging in and sticking in there, I was really pleased with that part of our performance."
That start Sermanni referenced came in the shape of a goal for Biyendolo inside the first minute.
The Americans split the Australian defence apart with ease and Jaedyn Shaw's delivery from the left of the penalty box was easily finished by Biyendolo.

She had a second chalked off for offside five minutes later, and Micah was forced to parry away one of the American's long-range efforts.
Rocked early, the Matildas began to grow into the game as the first half wore on, then continued that rhythm after the break when they were more than a match for the world No.1.
They were, however, unable to finish their chances, and the USA had no such issues when Steph Catley and Charli Grant failed to contain Allyson Sentnor, who teed up Cooper for America's second in the 68th minute.
Heyman gave Australia hope of snatching a draw with her late strike, but all the action was at the other end, Micah doing incredibly well to deny Sentnor and keep the final score close.

CBP Will Be 'Suited and Booted' At FIFA Club World Cup

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced a heightened security presence at the FIFA Club World Cup, raising concerns from fans amid ongoing protests against President Donald Trump's immigration policies. These concerns about CBP's presence first arose following a now-deleted post from the agency stating that officers would be 'suited and booted' for this weekend's opening round of the World Cup. The 32-team tournament is set to kick off this weekend across the country, with the first game taking place tomorrow at 7 p.m. between Inter Miami and Egypt's Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. A spokesperson from CBP has stated that the agency works with many of the largest sporting events and that their presence at the FIFA Club World Cup is standard. 'U.S. Customs and Border Protection is committed to working with our local and federal partners to ensure the FIFA Club World Cup is safe for everyone involved, as we do with every major sporting event, including the Super Bowl. Our mission remains unchanged,' explained the spokesperson to The Athletic. FIFA president Gianni Infantino addressed the concerns about CBP's presence and said he has no concerns about the security process. 'No, I don't have any concerns about anything in the sense that we are already attentive on any security question,' he said, according to ESPN. 'Of course, the most important for us is to guarantee security for all fans who come to the games. And this is our priority.' In addition to CBP helping with security at the tournament, NBC 6 South Florida confirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents would also be in attendance. ICE reportedly told NBC 6 that 'all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status.' Although CBP, ICE, and FIFA have all stated that there should be no reason to be concerned, many are still pointing out the issues with the agencies' presence at this event. Thomas Kennedy, an immigration advocate with the Florida Immigrant Coalition, said the framing of this event and the current actions by CBP and ICE should be worrisome for people attending the games. Kennedy said he would be 'worried and disturbed' if planning to go to the games, noting that he 'would probably stay away altogether' to ensure safety. 'Detentions have clearly increased, and there's such a hostile immigration enforcement environment right now,' he told The Miami Herald. 'It's not just Miami—international fans with valid visas could feel intimidated. There are real financial and emotional consequences.' These worries come as protests have taken place to voice displeasure with the current immigration policies, creating unrest in areas where ICE was conducting sweeps. These protests began in Los Angeles but have quickly transitioned into states across the country, including multiple protests already taking place and being planned in both Dallas and Austin, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

Where do the Eagles rank in spending at each position following mandatory minicamp?

Where do the Eagles rank in spending at each position following mandatory minicamp? An updated overview of the Eagles' spending on offensive and defensive positions, and their ranking among all 32 teams following mandatory minicamp. The Eagles lost several key starters and contributors in free agency but bounced back and made several efficient signings to complete the first wave. On offense, the backup running back and starting right guard departed, leaving an explosive offense with two holes that need to be filled. All wasn't lost, as the Eagles added a running back, three pass-rushing linebackers, two tight ends, a cornerback, and a new long snapper. The Eagles added ten talented rookies on NFL draft weekend, and they hit the practice field immediately with two days of rookie minicamp on Friday and Saturday. After watching 12 players depart in free agency, Roseman added two dynamic SEC linebackers, an All-American pass rusher, three offensive linemen, and an accomplished quarterback from Philadelphia. The defense has undergone an overhaul after defensive tackle Milton Williams (New England), Josh Sweat (Arizona), cornerback Darius Slay (Pittsburgh), cornerback Isaiah Rodgers (Minnesota), and linebacker Oren Burks (Cincinnati) all departed via free agency. Philadelphia currently has about $32,459,183 in cap space per Over The Cap, and they're spending about $147,866,032 on offense, while only spending $62,576,126 on defense after the Bryce Huff trade. After years of the offensive and defensive lines carrying the financial load, the Eagles have several skill players who are among the highest-paid at their positions. The Eagles will again be a Super Bowl favorite in the NFC and have one of the most talented rosters despite having one of the lowest average positional spending. Here's where Philadelphia sits in positional spending on both sides of the ball, thanks to Over The Cap. Offense Total spending: $147,866,032 NFL rank: 14th After years of having both sides of the football hover around $80+ million, the offense has ballooned with Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Lane Johnson, Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, and Dallas Goedert all among the highest paid at their positions. QB Total spending: $24,881,738 NFL rank: 17th Biggest cap hit: Jalen Hurts ($21,869,800) Howie Roseman's wizardry is in the numbers, and despite Jalen Hurts being due $42,000,000 guaranteed, his cap hit in 2025 is half that number. RB Total spending: $13,758,074 NFL rank: 12th Biggest cap hit: Saquon Barkley ($6,661,000) WR Total spending: $34,033,908 NFL rank: 11th Biggest cap hit: A.J. Brown ($17,591,894) TE Total spending: $17,357,998 NFL rank: 14th Biggest cap hit: Dallas Goedert $10,714,463 The Eagles reworked Goedert's contract, dropping his cap hit from $11,810,583 to $10,714,463 for 2025. Last season, Goedert played in 10 games, logging 42 receptions for 496 yards, averaging 11.8 yards per catch, and two scores. Goedert has missed 15 games since the 2022 season and has only played a full slate of games once. OL Total spending: $57,834,314 NFL rank: 11th Biggest cap hits: Lane Johnson ($18,412,000) and Jordan Mailata ($15,235,233) Defense Total spending: $62,576,126 NFL rank: 31st After seeing several big-name defenders exit and trading Bryce Huff, the Eagles' top-ranked defense is 32nd in spending at just over $62 million. DT Total spending: $16,630,628 NFL rank: 28th Biggest cap hit: Jalen Carter ($5,947,141), Jordan Davis ($5,399,786) The Eagles picked up Jordan Davis' fifth-year option, and his salary will balloon to a projected $12,900,000—the second-cheapest fifth-year option of the 32 players selected in the first round of the 2022 draft. Davis has recorded just 3.5 sacks in his three years with the team. Edge Rusher Total spending: $11,621,464 NFL rank: 32nd Biggest cap hit: Nolan Smith ($3,270,659) In March, Philadelphia saw $16 million in salary cap departures with Josh Sweat joining the Cardinals and Brandon Graham announcing his retirement. The Eagles gained more relief after trading Bryce Huff to the 49ers. Nolan Smith will enter year three of his rookie deal, while Jalyx Hunt will enter year two. Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari will also have low cap hits. LB Total spending: $11,603,838 NFL rank: 27th The Eagles are 27th in the NFL after signing Zack Baun to a three-year, $51 million deal with a $17 million per year average. The $17 million-per-year deal keeps Baun off the free-agent market and makes him the fourth-highest-paid in the NFL, behind Fred Warner ($21 million per year), Roquan Smith ($20 million per year), and Tremaine Edmunds ($18 million). CB Total spending: $15,747,258 NFL rank: 29th Biggest cap hit: Quinyon Mitchell ($3,367,749) Darius Slay and James Bradberry were released, but their presence still hovered on the roster. Slay was a post-June 1 cut, meaning his $13.7 million salary cap hit was the fifth highest on the team. Bradberry counted $5,195,000. Second-year cornerback Quinyon Mitchell has the highest cap hit for a player on the roster at $3,367,749. S Total spending:$6,972,938 NFL rank: 31st Biggest cap hit: Reed Blankenship ($1,845,000) C.J. Gardner-Johnson had a $4.9 million cap hit for 2025 and a $6 million cap for 2026, both of which were workable numbers before his trade to Houston. He had $2M guaranteed for this season and none for 2026. According to Over The Cap, the move cleared $211,000 in space but carries $4.7 million of his original $4.9M cap hit in dead money.

Aussie rugby coach who put the roar back into Tigers

Michael Cheika's legacy will have a lasting impact on the club, no matter what the result in his final game as head coach against Bath in the Premiership final. That's the view of England lock Ollie Chessum, who has hailed the former Wallabies coach for his impact at the Midlands club. It is set to be a summer of change at Welford Road, with former Leicester player Geoff Parling, the ex-Wallabies assistant, to take charge after Cheika departs at the end of his one-year contract. See more from Michael Cheika ahead of Saturday's Gallagher Premiership Final 👇 — Leicester Tigers (@LeicesterTigers) June 12, 2025 Just a couple of seasons on from their last Premiership final triumph, the Tigers finished eighth in a disappointing 2023-24 campaign. The arrival of Cheika - who took the Wallabies to the 2015 World Cup final and then guided Argentina into the last four two years ago - saw Leicester's fortunes transformed. On the back of a new-found mental resilience, Cheika's men were driven on to second place in the table behind Bath. Chessum, who fought his way back to fitness following a knee injury suffered in an England training camp in October, feels 58-year-old Cheika deserves plenty of plaudits for helping turn the club around. "We were in a real good spot a few years ago as a group, and we probably lost our way a little bit and that is how you find yourself down in eighth and out of the play-offs," said Chessum. "There is no denying that something needed to change in quite a few aspects of our game. "Cheiks will say we have probably not changed too much technically, but it is just around that mental side and the emotional side of the game is what has really changed everything this year and has put us in this spot." Chessum, 24, added: "He just finds a way to galvanise the group, get them to find a real meaning in what they are doing and use that to to drive them on. Our mental approach for the team has changed massively towards games. "He will say that goes a huge way towards winning, it is just believing you can do it and sort of shocking yourself really with what you are able to do as an individual. "The way he has changed how the team approaches the game mentally has been a huge part of what he will leave as a legacy." Cheika has named an unchanged side from the semi-final win over Sale for Saturday's final at the Allianz Stadium, which will see several Leicester players make their last appearance in a Tigers shirt. Club stalwarts Dan Cole and Ben Youngs will retire while captain Julian Montoya, South Africa fly-half Handre Pollard, James Cronin and Matt Rogerson are all set to depart. Leicester lost home and away to Bath during the regular campaign, beaten 43-15 at The Recreation Ground in May. Chessum knows the Tigers will have to step up to the challenge as Bath seek to complete a trophy treble with what would be the Somerset club's first league title since 1996.
