Mourners at controversial bishop's funeral told one moment cannot define a life

Irish Examiner01-05-2025

Mourners at the funeral of a controversial Irish bishop who resigned over his handling of cleric abuse allegations have been told that one moment cannot define a person's life or legacy.
Bishop Brendan Comiskey, who died this week at the age of 89, quit as bishop of the Ferns diocese in the south-east of Ireland in 2002 after acknowledging failings in his handling of complaints against notorious priest Fr Sean Fortune.
The diocese's much-criticised response to allegations against Fr Fortune, who took his own life in 1999 while on bail awaiting trial on a litany of child abuse charges, and other clerics in its parishes prompted the government's landmark Ferns Inquiry.

The subsequent Ferns Report, published in 2005, was damning of the diocese's handling of clerical abuse allegations across a four-decade period.
Requiem mass for Bishop Comiskey, who was originally from Co Monaghan, was held in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Clondalkin in west Dublin on Thursday.
Fr Jim Fegan, a priest in the Ferns diocese, told hundreds of mourners who gathered for the service that failure in one aspect of a person's life does not define them entirely.
He said the bishop was in some respects a 'product of the church culture of his time'.
Fr Fegan said the bishop 'believed deeply in the power of kindness and that every person deserved to be treated with dignity and respect'.
'And he embraced this belief wholeheartedly,' he added.
'He had a huge, huge heart, and he always spoke of the value of compassion and the power of a kind word or a helping hand.'

Reflecting on his resignation as Bishop of Ferns, Fr Fegan said: 'Leadership is never easy, and Brendan experienced his own unique mix of gifts, challenges and life lessons, and there were times when he felt he did not meet the expectations that had been set before him, but yet it is very important to recognise that failure in one aspect does not define the entirety of a person's life or their great legacy.'
The cleric went on to quote part of the statement Bishop Comiskey made upon his resignation. It was a statement in which the bishop asked for forgiveness and acknowledged while he had tried to do his best, his best was 'not good enough'.
The priest then told mourners: 'My friends, we can see more clearly now that Brendan Comiskey was in some ways a product of the church culture of his time, and that was a culture that focused on organisation rather than people.
'At all times, Brendan stated very clearly that all those who have suffered abuse must never be forgotten, and they must be assured of how much God truly loves them and how abuse is handled must be constantly under review.
'No one moment is the measure of a person's life. All the moments must be in the scales, and we leave the final reckoning to God, who alone knows our innermost thoughts.
'The overall story of Brendan Comiskey's life and the church that he led, I believe, helps to shape our approach to leadership and accountability today so we too can admit when we have gone astray and correct our course, so that we can better appreciate that leadership is, above all, a shared endeavour filled with good decisions and bad, and that life is not just about how we handle our failures or our successes, but rather about the love we give to our companions on the road.'
After the service, the bishop's remains were taken for burial in Annyalla Cemetery in Co Monaghan.

Her five-year-old brother was also taken to hospital following the crash. Read More Officers drug-tested Asolo-Ogugua at the scene, which he failed. The Met Police arrested him on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving and drug-driving. Asolo-Ogugua was today sentenced at Woolwith Crown Court for causing the nine-year-old's death. The court heard he fell asleep at the wheel, after having taken cannabis the night before. Most read in The Sun He mounted the opposite pavement as Ada was riding her bike with her family. Detectives from the Met's Roads and Transport team later trawled through They were able to capture the exact moment he fell asleep, and saw the bus swerve cross the carriageway. Asolo-Oguguathe was charged in February earlier this year with causing death by dangerous driving while under influence of drugs as well as driving while over the drug limit. He admitted both offences at Woolwich Crown Court in April. Asolo-Ogugua, of Banfield Road, Southwark, was today jailed for four years. The 23-year-old has also been disqualified from driving for seven years. 'PILLARS OF STRENGTH' Detective Sergeant Sam Miles, who led the investigation, said: 'Asolo-Ogugua will have to spend the rest of his life regretting the night he chose to stay awake before getting behind the wheel of a bus with cannabis in his system. 'It's a night that has cost him his freedom and snatched away the life of an innocent little girl. 'Ada had her whole life ahead of her. 'She lived in the area and attended a local primary school where she was a popular and happy pupil. 'In a remarkable show of courage and humility, Ada's family chose to take her life forward to help others by donating her organs. 'I can only hope today's sentence brings some closure for Ada's family who have remained a pillar of strength throughout these proceedings.' FAMILY HEARTBREAK Ada's organs were donated and she went on to help six other people following her tragic death, her family said. They also previously shared two pictures of their daughter, including one that shows her having had her hair cut for donation. The nine-year-old was a Turkish-British national that lived in Bexleyheath with her family and attended a local primary school. In a heartwrenching statement shared by the Met Police, Ada's father, Bora, said: "The images of that horrific moment remain seared into my mind. That scene replays endlessly, a constant reminder of the day my world fractured beyond repair. "This tragedy happened on my watch, a father's ultimate failure. My world has been turned upside down, and with it, the foundations of my family have crumbled. "My darling Ada. Our thanks are not enough to show our gratitude for you. We will honour your name with acts of magnitude. You will never be forgotten. "We will make this story one of love and thanks that we owe everybody. Your presence, and passing, will leave a mark in this country and we will fight to make drug driving a part of its history." 'RECKLESS AND UTTERLY SELFISH' Senior Crown Prosecutor, Miranda Jollie, of the Crown Prosecution Service, added: 'Asolo-Ogugua was reckless and utterly selfish to get behind the wheel of a bus after consuming drugs and put many lives at risk that day. 'His actions have robbed a young girl of her entire life. Our thoughts remain with Ada's family and friends as they try to come to terms with their unimaginable loss "I hope his sentence today can help to bring some closure for Ada's family and highlight the devastating consequences of drug driving.'

'You won't be forgotten' - murdered farmer's friend pays tearful tribute

A close friend of murder victim Mike Gaine has paid an emotional tribute to him days after the Kerry farmer was laid to rest. Shane McCarthy, who was heavily involved with Mr Gaine in his beloved sport of rallying, released the tribute on TikTok on Monday. 'Mike, you'll never be forgotten. A true friend,' he wrote. And he put up a series of photographs of 56-year-old Mr Gaine, whose Funeral Mass took place in his native Kenmare on Saturday morning. The Funeral Mass, followed by a private laying to rest, came just over a fortnight after the partial remains of Mr Gaine – last seen in Kenmare on March 20 - were found on his 1,000 acre farm at Carrig East, some 8kms outside the town. To the song Those Were The Days by acclaimed Irish songwriter and singer Barry Kerr, Mr McCarthy published more than dozen photos of Mr Gaine. They include him taking part in car rallies. They also include Mr Gaine socialising. And there are also images of him posing at a sign for Moll's Gap - near his home outside Kenmare. Hundreds of people responded to Mr McCarthy's post throughout Monday. One said: "Best post I've seen here about this man, thanks for posting." Another said: "What a beautiful tribute. I hope Mike and all his friends and family get justice, his poor dog too. May he rest now. Thanks for sharing these pics with us." And another said: "The light of heaven to you, Mike. King of the road. RIP." Gardai are still probing the murder of Mr Gaine, but nobody has been charged. Former US Army private Michael Kelley, 53, who lived on Mr Gaine's land, was arrested and released over the murder last month. He has repeatedly denied any involvement in the murder of Mr Gaine.
