Tom Hanks's daughter says her mother ‘never recovered' from his fame: ‘His stature in the world obliterated her'
Tom Hanks's daughter, E.A. Hanks, opened up about how her mother struggled to process the Forrest Gump actor's growing fame.
E.A. — which stands for Elizabeth Anne — was the daughter of Hanks's first wife, Susan Dillingham. The former couple also shared son Colin Hanks.
Dillingham and Hanks met as theater students at Sacramento State University and were married from 1978 to 1987.
In her new memoir, The 10: A Memoir of Family And The Open Road, E.A. embarks on a six-month-long road trip from Los Angeles to Palatka, Florida, where her mother's family is from, to learn more about her before she died from lung cancer in 2002.
Part of the book discusses Dillingham adjusting to Hanks's rise after he shot to fame in the late Eighties with roles in films like Splash (1984), The Money Pit (1986), and Big (1988).
E.A. specifically writes that her mother was a 'would-be actress who never recovered from her ex-husband's catastrophic fame.'
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, E.A. said that she thought the word 'catastrophic' was the best way to describe how Dillingham felt about her ex-husband's success.
'She felt that his stature in the world obliterated her and any chance she had at continuing her stage career,' she said. 'The uncomfortable truth, and there's a lot of them in this book, is she didn't really have a career, and her ex-husband becoming the Tom Hanks was more insult to injury than significant impediment.'
She continued: ''Catastrophic' also because that brand of megawatt fame erases what actually matters in an artist and what set my dad apart in the first place: humanity and talent. But I chose that word, catastrophic, not her.'
Hanks went on to re-marry Rita Wilson in 1988, and they welcomed two sons: Chet in 1990 and Truman in 1995.
Despite her mother never receiving a formal diagnosis, E.A. assumed that her mother was bipolar with episodes of extreme paranoia and delusion.
During a portion of her memoir, E.A. said her mother slowly started to become more neglectful, leading to a switch in the custody arrangement meaning she and Colin would only see their mother on weekends and during the summer.
'As the years went on, the backyard became so full of dog s*** that you couldn't walk around it, the house stank of smoke. The fridge was bare or full of expired food more often than not, and my mother spent more and more time in her big four-poster bed, poring over the Bible,' her book read.
'One night, her emotional violence became physical violence, and in the aftermath I moved to Los Angeles, right smack in the middle of the seventh grade.'

Mariska Hargitay Confronts Her Late Mother's 'Sex Symbol' Legacy in Emotional 'My Mom Jayne 'Trailer
HBO released the official trailer for Mariska Hargitay's feature film directorial debut My Mom Jayne The documentary will debut on HBO and Max on June 27 In the trailer, Hargitay says that her mother's "career made me want to do it differently, but I want to understand her now"Mariska Hargitay is reclaiming her mother's story — and her own. HBO released the official trailer for Hargitay's directorial film debut My Mom Jayne, which will premiere on HBO and Max on June 27. "I've spent my whole life distancing myself from my mother, Jayne Mansfield, the sex symbol," Hargitay, 61, begins in the trailer. "Her career made me want to do it differently, but I want to understand her now." When Hargitay was just three years old, she, along with her two older brothers, survived the car wreck that killed Mansfield, then just 34, in 1967. The film will hit Max just two days before the 58th anniversary of Mansfield's death. "I don't have any memories of her," Hargitay says in the trailer. "And then my dad died in 2006. I've never talked to my siblings about their experiences," she says of her sister, Jayne Marie Mansfield, brothers Mickey Hargitay Jr. and Zoltan Hargitay, and youngest brother, Tony Cimber, all of whom are featured in the documentary. "I don't know how the hell you got me to do this," Mickey Jr. says in the trailer with a good-natured laugh. And while speaking to her sister, Hargitay admits that she's "envious" of Jayne Marie's memories of their mother. "In the beginning, I had her to myself," Jayne Marie shares. "She'd take me everywhere." Hargitay also discusses what she calls her mother's "persona" with her siblings as they examine Mansfield's "pin-up" public image. The mother they knew widely differed from the bombshell presented to Hollywood. Says Mickey Jr., "I looked the other way because I knew she was really smart." Later in the clip, this time speaking to her youngest brother Tony, Hargitay says that she's "heard things that are really ugly." "I don't know that I want to know those ugly things," says Tony in response. Mansfield was married to Tony's father, Matt Cimber, for roughly a year, during which time they welcomed Tony. Hargitay also address the keeping of family secrets that she's done for years, and how she's gained a newfound understanding that the secrecy doesn't honor anyone. With the initial premiere of My Mom Jayne at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, Hargitay revealed in the documentary that her biological father is not Mickey Hargitay, the man who raised her, but rather a former Las Vegas entertainer named Nelson Sardelli. The actress opened up further about the shocking revelation in an interview with Vanity Fair, telling the outlet that she went to see Sardelli perform in Atlantic City, N.J., when she was 30 years old. Moved to tears when Hargitay introduced herself, Sardelli said, 'I've been waiting 30 years for this moment.' But Hargitay said she found herself giving him a tough time and going "full Olivia Benson on him," referring to her SVU character. 'I was like, 'I don't want anything, I don't need anything from you.… I have a dad, '' she recalled telling him. 'There was something about loyalty. I wanted to be loyal to Mickey.' As the trailer comes to a close, Hargitay says that she set out on this journey to "[reclaim] our family story. That is what this is about for me. Because she's a part of me. I want to know her as Jayne. My mom Jayne." The North American premiere of My Mom Jayne will take place during the Tribeca Film Festival on June 13 in New York City before the documentary debuts on HBO and Max on June 27. Sean 'Diddy' Combs And Harvey Weinstein Accused Of Sexual Assault By Same Woman
Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Harvey Weinstein were both accused of drugging and sexually assaulting model Crystal McKinney. She first filed the complaint against Diddy in May 2024. Her complaint against Weinstein was filed in February 2025, and amended late last month to also name Combs. McKinney alleged that Weinstein raped her and a friend in a Manhattan hotel room in 2003. In the filing obtained by PEOPLE, McKinney was said to have received a call from an unnamed modeling agency executive who'd arranged a business meeting between her and Weinstein on the night in question. She assumed he was considering her for an acting role. She and one of her roommates arrived and were escorted to Weinstein's table. He allegedly told them 'repeatedly that he wanted to get to know both of them better, so he could see their 'real selves'' and also wanted to discuss potential acting roles in a quieter space. After inviting them to his hotel room, Weinstein allegedly served them several bottles of 'Boulevardier and Dom Pérignon' and 'vodka cocktails' before grabbing McKinney's breasts. She and her friend allegedly retreated to the bathroom and claimed Weinstein forced himself into the room, demanding that they strip and 'take a bath with him.' The model stated that she and her friend obliged out of fear. Weinstein allegedly forced the women to perform sexual acts on each other in the tub, later raping them on the hotel room's bed. McKinney claimed that she was 'disgusted but too frightened to voice her opposition.' Weinstein 'abruptly left the hotel room' following the incident. Weinstein attorney Imran H. Ansari told Vanity Fair in a statement, 'Harvey Weinstein categorically denies the outlandish and fantastical claims made against him by Crystal McKinney in her complaint. Made late in time and suspiciously on the heels of her complaint against Sean 'Diddy' Combs, Mr. Weinstein is ready to refute and defend against the salacious claims, that are believed to have been made with an opportunistic motive.' The disgraced film producer has been convicted of various sex crimes in New York and California. He's currently on trial in New York because an appeals court overturned his conviction. Combs, on the other hand, is on trial for sex trafficking, racketeering, kidnapping, and more. He faces 15 years-to-life if found guilty. 18 Movies That Make People Mad
Redditor @One_Shock_1643 recently asked Reddit: 'What movie absolutely pissed you off?' and boy, did people deliver. Here are some of the best answers, and FYI, some posts have been edited for clarity! 'Now You See Me. Dumbest fucking plot twist of my fucking life. Waste of a good cast. Truly can't believe they made another one coming out this year.' — Former-Complaint-336 'Forrest Gump. It's improbable, insulting, and has a skewed view of the world. Jenny comes closest to reality, but in a totally cliché way.' — Susuze2000 'Toy Story 4. Why do you have to ruin the perfect ending?' — sword-sandal493 'World War Z. Took one of my favorite novels and changed just about everything about it except the title.' — TripleSingleHOF '40 Days and 40 Nights, a sex 'comedy' starring Josh Hartnett. I put comedy in quotes because very little of it actually tried to be funny. Anyway, it ends with his character getting tied up and raped by an ex-girlfriend, who wins a bunch of money in an office pool for doing so. Then his current girlfriend breaks up with him for cheating on her. Suffice to say, the tone of this movie is all over the place.' — CritterJams 'Pretty Woman. I knew mothers who said it was their prepubescent daughter's favorite movie when it came out. Scary.' — PlaceTraditional6861 'Downsizing. Total bait & switch of a movie.' — SovietWalrus1 'Sweet Home Alabama. Girl lies and brings her new rich and well-connected fiancé all the way to Alabama just for her to say no to him at the altar.' — okeh_dude 'Shutter Island. Probably more so because the commercials said 'the twist you'll never see coming,' so I spent the entire movie trying to guess what the twist could be and came up with a million overthought possibilities. In the end, it was my very first guess that I dismissed because I thought it was too obvious. I was so mad. The marketing should have never said there was a twist in that one.' — JonathanTheZombieKid 'Reality Bites, I hated the Ethan Hawke hipster character, and identified more with Ben Stiller's yuppie. And the whole movie dated quick.' — jackstraw_65 'Orphan. The dad is so irritating.' — Difficult-Act-8237 'The Terminal. Just the worst fucking movie ever... just two hours of a bumbling Tom Hanks doing a shitty 'foreign man' imitation ala Andy Kauffman and the big mystery of the coffee can at the end? [There] were autographs of Jazz musicians in a photo he was completing for his dead father. Ugh it was so bland, innane and boring that you couldn't even make fun of the fucking thing MST3k style. Ugh fuck that movie!!' — bigpaparod 'Longlegs. What a mess of a movie. It's all over the place. It feels like a fan-made edit of an entire TV show that they added some random music to.' — Acceptable_Orange624 'La La Land. It just fucking sucked.' — i_luv_pooping 'Thunderbolts. Such a trash movie. The more I thought about it, the more I got pissed for spending money on it.' — Effective-Agent-6856 'I remember once watching The Road and when it finished just felt like I had wasted hours of my life.' — jessicanmorganbell 'A Beautiful Mind. I'm an economist. How the hell could they fuck up their explanation of Nash equilibrium? Hey, Howard, get a real fucking economist to explain the man's central contribution to the fucking field he won a fucking Nobel fucking Prize for rather than making up some fucking bullshit.' — ikonoqlast And finally... 'Pretty much every Disney live-action remake.' — DazedLogic What movies make you irrationally mad? Let me know in the comments below!
