Harrington prize money as he earns massive pay-day for Senior US Open win

Irish Daily Mirror17 hours ago

Padraig Harrington in the 2025 Senior US Open Champion after beating out the field at the Broadmoor Club in Colorado.
A final round of 67 left the Dubliner on 11-under for the tournament, one stroke clear of eventual runner-up Stewart Cink. Harrington and Cink traded the lead on numerous occasions this evening, with Harrington eventually edging past the 2009 Open Champion.
Cink had Harrington on the ropes at one point as he reeled off four Birdies on the spin. But Harrington showed his trademark mental toughness, making Birdie at a key time before parring the final seven holes to take home the win.
This win makes Harrington a two-time major champion on the PGA Champions Tour following on from his US Open win in 2022 added to his three major wins that were secured before he joined the PGA Champions Tour.
Harrington's victory should come as little surprise to fans following the senior tour as the 53-year-old has been in excellent form, going close at the PGA Championship last month.
And to make things even sweeter for Harrington, he is set to take home a paycheque for $800,000, not a bad week's work for the three

Padraig Harrington's telling response after Rory McIlroy 'terribly wrong' stance

Padraig Harrington has delivered a glowing verdict of the Champions Tour after winning his second US Senior Open title. Harrington won the tournament by one stroke on Sunday, narrowly finishing ahead of Stewart Cink at the top of the leaderboard. The three-time major winner carded three-under-par in his final round to finish on 11-under. A run of seven consecutive pars was enough for Harrington to see off Cink's challenge and claim the €682k ($800k) top prize, having triumphed at the same event in 2022. Rory McIlroy has previously dismissed the idea of joining the Champions Tour in the future. However, despite his brief run-in with a commentator at Broadmoor, Harrington admitted to loving his time at the prestigious over-50s events, which do not exist in most other sports. 'It's unbelievable. We're so much better together at this stage of our careers,' Harrington explained after his victory. 'Everybody is happier and friendlier. 'We're not half as grumpy as we were when we were young guys. I think, as you get older, you realise that you don't actually have all the secrets and that you can actually tell everybody everything, and it's up to them to figure it out too. 'We're much more relaxed than -- we're still competitive when we're on the golf course. We want to play great golf, but I think the environment around the Champions Tour is really nice.' McIlroy does not share Harrington's enthusiasm for over-50s golf. In March, he was asked about possibly joining the Champions Tour when he finally meets the age criteria. 'Absolutely not,' McIlroy declared ahead of his victory at the Players Championship. 'I will not play Champions Tour golf. Look, I've said a lot of absolutes in my time that I've walked back, but I do not envision playing Champions Tour golf. Something has went terribly wrong if I have to compete at golf at 50.' However, McIlroy, who achieved a career Grand Slam by winning the Masters in April, explained the nuances behind his stance. He highlighted the longevity of his professional career as one reason behind his lack of interest in the Champions Tour. 'I look at other sports, I turned pro in 2007. I'm 18 years into a career. Not a lot of athletes can say they've had an 18-year career, and I'm only 35,' he explained. 'I can acknowledge how lucky golfers are to be able to do what they do for so long compared to other athletes, so whenever I feel like the time is right, I'll have no problem moving aside and letting the next generation do their thing.' Meanwhile, Harrington, who also finished T2 at the Senior PGA Championship last month, relishes his time on the tour. The 53-year-old believes the Champions Tour has given him a fresh perspective on the sport. 'Most of us would have burnt out in golf,' Harrington said. 'You put so much into your golfing career, you burn out. Usually you last about 20 years is the burn-out period, 15 to 20 years. The Champions Tour is a new lease on life. 'The only way you can kind of do it is do it with a different attitude and a new attitude. As I said, it's about, I suppose, enjoying your past glories now and reliving them.' Wimbledon schedule: Day 1 order of play as Emma Raducanu in action

Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter are set to take centre stage on the first day of Wimbledon, as the championship kicks off on one of the year's hottest days. Two British lasses will grace the show courts, with Raducanu, who recently expressed her desire to move past her 2021 US Open triumph, scheduled to play last on Court One against Welsh player Mimi Xu. Raducanu is hoping for another impressive Grand Slam performance. Meanwhile, Boulter will compete on Centre Court, a familiar territory for her, where she'll face Spanish player Paula Badosa. As the ninth seed, it will require a top-notch performance from the home favourite, who has twice made it to the third round at SW19, to defeat Badosa. Following tradition, Boulter will step onto Centre Court after defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who is set to open the day's play. He'll be up against Italian Fabio Fognini, as the newly crowned French Open champion seeks his third consecutive Wimbledon title. Off the court, Alcaraz has been romantically linked to Raducanu. When questioned about these rumours ahead of the tournament, the young Brit responded with a broad grin, insisting they were merely friends, reports the Mirror. Another Brit to watch out for is Jacob Fearnley - he's also slated to play on Court One against Joao Fonseca. His match is scheduled before Raducanu's, but after women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka kicks off her tournament. This year's Wimbledon has seen a record number of British players in the draw, with spectators able to catch many of them on the outer courts. Cameron Norrie, who reached the semi-finals in 2022, will face Roberto Bautista Agut on Court 18 just after midday. At 11am, two local favourites kick off their campaigns: Sonay Kartal takes on Jelena Ostapenko on Court 3, while Oliver Crawford faces Mattia Bellucci on Court 16. Over on Court 12, Hannah Klugman is up against Canada's 29th seed Leylah Fernandez, who was defeated by Raducanu in the US Open final four years ago. In non-British action, women's Australian Open champion Madison Keys starts her tournament on the first day, facing Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Men's fifth seed Taylor Fritz, who has been turning heads in the run-up to Wimbledon, squares off against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Ons Jabeur, a two-time finalist whose ranking has slipped, begins her quest for a Grand Slam title against Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova.
