Students create new statue of fishing town founder
A new statue of the legendary founder of Grimsby has been unveiled.
The metal sculpture of of Grim saving Prince Havelock has been produced by students at the Grimsby Institute.
It stands outside the campus on the site of a previous artwork of the pair, which was removed in 2006 after repeated vandalism.
That 50-year-old stone statue has been restored and moved to the town's Freeman Street Market.
The new "21st Century Grim" was designed by three art students and built in the Institute's fabrication and welding departments before being painted in the body shop.
Ann Hardy chief executive of the college's TEC Partnership, said it had been a "really collective journey for this statue".
"People of Grimsby are really proud of their heritage and quite rightly so," she said.
"It's a fantastic story, so this statue represents pride."
The ancient tale tells of a fisherman called Grim rescuing Havelock, a Danish prince, from a stormy sea off the Lincolnshire coast, before going on to found the town that bears his name.

Community murals celebrate village's heritage
Two murals have been painted with the help of pupils from a local primary school to celebrate the heritage of a South Yorkshire village. The artworks, in Horse and Groom Square in Goldthorpe, Barnsley, were painted by Craig Evans and Tom Jackson, who are known as STATIC, with the help of the community. The artists created stencil illustrations with children at Highgate Primary Academy, and those were incorporated into the pieces. Councillor Robin Franklin said: "Everyone who has played their part in shaping and painting the murals, which are colourful, vibrant and joyful, can be rightly proud of a job well done." Franklin said the project, funded by the government's Towns Fund, showed members of the Dearne community could achieve "great things" together. "Barnsley really is the place of possibilities," she added. STATIC held an open painting day in April so people could contribute to a piece called The Stories on the side of the library in the square. A spray paint art workshop at Goldthorpe Pentecostal Community Church and a drop-in session at the Snap-Tin Cafe were also held to gather people's views. Matthew Stephens, chair of Goldthorpe Town Board, said: "STATIC have done a great job bringing the fantastic vision for the murals to life with help from everyone who came along to the community painting day. "It really adds extra colour and vibrance to Horse and Groom Square at the heart of Goldthorpe." Beam, a cultural organisation which works across the north of England, also contributed to the project which was commissioned by Barnsley Council. A council spokesperson said the pieces were part of a package of major artwork projects under way in the Dearne area, funded by the Goldthorpe Town Deal. Concert to raise money for cardiac screenings
A fundraising concert has been organised in memory of an eight-year-old boy who died from a cardiac arrest. Jasper Cook, from Birkenshaw, died in January 2022, three days after he fell ill with Covid-19. His parents, Kim and Ian Cook, said money raised from the event would be used to help fund cardiac screenings for young people. The event comes after Mrs Cook was nominated in the fundraiser category for this year's BBC Radio Leeds Make a Difference Awards. "My whole ethos behind what we've been doing in Jasper's name is, the more people I can reach, the more money I can raise, the more young hearts I can screen, the more people I can stop being in this terrible position," she said. "We have already now done three days and tested nearly 300 young people between the ages of 14 and 35." Since her son's death Mrs Cook has completed a number of fundraising challenges and events, including skydiving. The concert, taking place at St Paul's Church later, in Birkenshaw, will feature a choir from Birkenshaw primary school, as well as singers from St Paul's and the BBG Academy. It will also feature the first public performance of a song written by in memory of Jasper by his friend and her father, called A Song for Jasper. Mrs Cook said: "It's been a really difficult few years, but we are I think pulling through. "I think what we've been doing with the heart screening has really given us a little bit of focus. The BBC Make a Difference Awards are organised to thank and recognise people who want to improve the lives of people in the communities where they live, with the winners due to be announced at a ceremony in Bradford on 13 September Mrs Cook was nominated by a family friend who said: "It is truly remarkable that the family, despite their utter grief in dealing with the tragic loss of their young son, are honouring his memory by doing all that they can to prevent other families having to go through what they have suffered."
