North Texas community rallies to reunite lost dog Huey with owner over 1,000 miles away
In The Colony, a community is coming together to reunite a dog with its owner.
A couple of weeks ago, Huey's owner reported him missing. The Utah resident had entrusted someone to take care of him, and he had gotten loose.
Somehow, Huey ended up more than a thousand miles away in Collin County. The Collin County Animal Shelter picked him up as a stray, and he was later transferred to The Colony Animal Services. Since sharing Huey's story online, it has been viewed more than 12,000 times.
This week, he's headed back home to reunite with his owner after the community donated about $2,000 to pay for his transportation.
"He's a beautiful dog and we just wanted to help the dog," The Colony Animal Services Director of Operations Mark Cooper said.
"We wanted to help this family and also help Colin County because we know that they're full. We had the means and the support to get him back home and we wanted to take advantage of that."

'Graveyard' of metal A-frames appears on roadside
A man who displayed a "graveyard" of more than two dozen metal A-frames by the side of a road said he wanted to provoke a response from people. Christopher "Chip" Thorogood from Braintree, Essex gathered the metal frames, which are used to hold roadworks signs, while collecting litter near the A120. "I was quite surprised how many there were, so I just made a display out of them to bring awareness," Mr Thorogood said. The frames were removed within 24 hours of the BBC contacting Essex Highways, while Braintree District Council advised against litter-picking near very busy roads. Mr Thorogood had displayed the items next to the Great Notley roundabout for several weeks. "I've just decided to make a visual effect," he said before their removal, adding it served a double purpose as an art project "to make people think" about the state of the environment. Essex Highways said everyone working for and on behalf of the authority was expected to remove traffic management items when works were complete but it could not take responsibility for signs left by utility companies and developers. "We are happy to collect any Essex Highways signs that may have been overlooked or moved from their original locations," a spokesman said. National Highways, which manages the A120, said it made "every effort" to keep the major road network clean and tidy. "Work is ongoing with our contractors to ensure any redundant traffic management equipment is removed from our network and we are grateful to the public for contacting us when this has not taken place," a spokesperson told the BBC. It added some frames were left "ready to use" on common diversion routes as it was more efficient than collecting and returning them each time. Braintree District Council deputy leader Tom Cunningham said he appreciated people's pride in their local area but urged caution. "We advise not to litter-pick along major highways that have an extremely high volume of traffic, such as the A120, nor roads that do not have a verge where people can walk safely by the side of the road," he said. Senior dog went missing on own Missouri property. He was found — 200 miles away
When a senior dog failed to come home after his daily routine of walking the property in Missouri, his owner was worried. It was normal when Lisa Wood's three dogs, Ruben, Manny and Captain, would spend the day exploring her family's property in West Plains, only when the dogs returned this May evening, the trio was down one. The 13-year-old Captain. 'Lisa started searching for Captain and posting on local Facebook groups to find out if he'd been spotted,' a June 25 news release from Best Friends Animal Society detailed about the night Captain went missing. 'Due to Captain's arthritis, Lisa knew he couldn't get far on his own, so she was shocked to get a call that Sunday from a shelter in Bentonville, AR — more than 200 miles from her home in Missouri.' Turns out, Captain was mistaken for a lost dog by a traveler and picked him up. 'Captain had been brought into the shelter by a woman who had been traveling in Missouri and thought she had found a lost dog. Luckily, Captain was microchipped years before, so the shelter was able to scan his microchip and connect with Lisa quickly,' the release said. Wood wasn't able to make the full five-hour drive to pick up Captain, so she looked to Best Friends Animal Society, an animal welfare organization, to help her out. 'When Best Friends got the call, they quickly jumped into action. That same day, Dani Rakestraw, Specialist, Training and Behavior at Best Friends jumped in the van and drove Captain to Branson, MO —halfway between Bentonville and West Plains — to reunite with Lisa,' the release described. Then came the happy reunion. 'Captain is an absolute joy,' Wood said. 'We've had him since he was just a few months old, and he's just the smartest dog. He's really part of the family — he loves my kids, and he even helps me teach and train the other dogs.' West Plains is about a 205-mile drive southwest from St. Louis.
