Excerpts:
Five Tests, not an easy place to tour. We haven't won a lot. Came close the last time around, but it has been a long wait to put our hands on that trophy, which will now be called the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy.
It's a good thing it's a five-Test series because the side can (make a) comeback. And for a young Indian side like this, with a new captain, new vice-captain, just about everything being new there, the five-Test series is ideal.
And of course, as far as the change of the trophy's name is concerned, that's up to the administrators. We got to try and get on with it. And I'm sure that it'll be a very exciting series, this one.
IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant opens up on chemistry with Shubman Gill and England challenge
You mentioned new a couple of times there. New captain, new vice-captain. To start with... Shubman Gill is young, still a work-in-progress as far as Test cricket and Test batting is concerned. How do you look at Shubman Gill, the Test batter? Do you feel he is ready for the challenge - both as a batter and a captain?
Now, whatever we've seen of Shubman Gill in Test cricket has given you the confidence that he's capable of performing in that format as well.
He did get useful runs in the tough, hard-fought series in Australia. Of course, England can always test the best batters. But again, that was at the start of his career. And we have a Shubman Gill here who's seen a lot of things already, even though he's 25. He's got a lot of experience.
He's been around for a while with the Indian team. He's been playing different formats. And he's also developed that sense of accepting responsibility and dealing with responsibility by virtue of becoming the captain of the franchisee side in the IPL.
So, it's all a matter of him bringing into play the learnings that he's had over a period of time. And for a young captain, what is important is the kind of support that he gets in terms of inputs from the other experienced members in the side. And of course, to just repeat the cliché, a captain is only as good as his team. A young captain needs his team to measure up, raise the bar and perform together. And that's when a young captain will probably be capable of overcoming the challenges on a tough tour such as this.
The support he gets and a captain is as good as the team. First, I'll get to the team bit. What were your initial thoughts on the squad? You think it has ticked the right boxes?
Spinners, yes, we've ticked the boxes. And even batting, maybe one-half of it. It's just that the other half will depend on the slot that is provided to the batters, that's given to the batters. And the role allocation, I think that is what will depend on.
It depends on who bats on which number.
And also, who it is that they want to be a part of this batting unit will be very important. Because we got the likes of (Abhimanyu) Easwaran and Karun Nair who almost forced their way into the side by sheer weight of their runs over a period of time. Now, the question is the level of confidence that the team management has on these two to give them the chances first up in the series.
One player you would have seen closely is Sai Sudharsan. Not mixing formats here but he is riding that recency bias after a fantastic IPL and has looked very compact. Inspires confidence with his County outings. And the way he has modelled his game to be very correct. Do you reckon he could get a look-in during this tour?
No, let's not forget that Easwaran has been getting runs much higher than him over a long period of time.
We have been having Easwaran as a part of the squad. We are not playing him. And that is again creating a lot of dilemma when the next selection comes up. We will have to try and reward him fully in the sense that there is no point picking him in the squad. We don't have, let's say, a player who has opened in the past, who is willing to open.
There is a vacant slot at the top of the order. And here you have on the other hand, you have a player who has been opening right through his life, who has got runs every season almost.
And then you pick him in the squad. When there is an opening slot which is vacant, you don't use him. I think we need to first answer that particular bit. Again, we have got somebody who is making a comeback after a long period of time. And then he is not a spring onion now. He is into his 30s. He is experienced. He is also in the best of form.
Poll
Will KL Rahul perform consistently in the upcoming Test series?
Yes, he's experienced.
No, he often tapers off.
It depends on the conditions.
You just mentioned Karun Nair. Someone who is coming back on good run in the domestic circuit, found his second wind, did well in the IPL on a couple of occasions, double-hundred for the India A set-up.
But then one player who continues to slip under the radar is KL Rahul. He starts a series in very emphatic fashion but then kind of tapers off. How important are these nine Tests going to be for KL Rahul - five away and then four at home.
Yeah, this has also happened on his last tour of England. He started off well and then he tapered down and this is something that has happened. We all know that. But again, still the fact of the matter is that he is experienced, he has got runs, he is capable of runs, he gives you the impression that he can get runs.
So, he also is aware of the fact that he needs to step up as far as consistency is concerned. Now, the matter is very straightforward.
You play him in the first three test matches, you see how he goes about it. Obviously, if he does well, you will continue him and then he has got to be told, yes, we are very well aware of the fact that you are talented, you have performed in all the three formats. Now, the time has come for you to up it in terms of consistency and a message has to be conveyed to him.
And that's the way to go about it. Failing which, you are anyway in a transition period. You got to try and look for other options.
I think this team is in the same situation as Dhoni's team when they embarked on the first T20 World Cup. There are no expectations. So, that is a big advantage
WV Raman
Everybody is saying that this will be Gautam Gambhir's team now, more than it would be Shubman Gill's. What do you make of that, coach? And how important is this an assignment for Gautam Gambhir?
It's not all about the coach all the time. Yes, we all know Gambhir is a good tactician. He's also a very intense man. And he's also got the best interest of the team at heart. So, we got to try and forget the fact that everything should be related to the coach. We didn't do this with his predecessors. We are doing it with him, if you remember.
So, coach is always somebody who's got to stay in the background. We should allow the coach to do his job.
And he's going to take all the decisions based on how he sees things. Because he's the one who is completely aware of what is exactly happening with each and every individual in the side. And then as far as this team is concerned, this will always be a team under the title of a captain who is successful. People are not calling this the Rohit's team until he started succeeding as a captain in white ball cricket.
The same happened with Virat in red ball cricket. So, it gets dubbed as the captain's team when he starts doing well when he stays put for a long period of time as a captain. But as far as this particular team is concerned, even though there's a lot of apprehension about how the series will pan out, I for one think this team is in the same situation as Dhoni's team when they embarked on the first T20 World Cup. There are no expectations.
So, that is a big advantage for this side. That's a real big advantage for this side. And they have everything to gain. The only way is up.
And I think therein lies this team to spring a surprise. Because let's not forget that even though India has not won many series in England, we've always sprung a lot of surprises there. Starting from Chandra's (Bhagwath Chandrasekhar) spell and
Ajit Wadekar
's series win in 1971, India has sprung a surprise or two always in England.
Nick Knight EXCLUSIVE: On Shubman Gill and absence of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma in England
Before I let you go, I'll put you on a spot there as I always like to do. Your prediction for the series, coach. Who's winning this one? And by what scoreline?
All I would like to see this team do is to play good cricket. I am not a great fan of this numbers game.
That's a diplomatic answer, coach. You gotta give me a scoreline.
A pragmatic answer. You always put people in a spot. I always give pragmatic answers.

‘He's better than me': Cheteshwar Pujara picks Pakistan batter as better player of spin than him and Virat Kohli

Cheteshwar Pujara has heaped praise on Pakistan legend Younis Khan, calling him a better player of spin than himself and even Virat Kohli. read more For Cheteshwar Pujara, only Younis Khan is a better player of spin than him, not even Virat Kohli. Image: PTI Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has picked former Pakistan batter Younis Khan as a better player of spin than himself, Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson. Known as one of the best players of spin in his generation, Pujara was asked to pick a player who he feels is a better player of spin than him, in a video posted by ESPNCricinfo. Some of the biggest names of modern cricket were tossed up, but Pujara reacted to only a few. After ignoring names like David Warner, Dean Elgar, Ross Taylor, Jonny Bairstow, Pujara broke the silence on Joe Root's name and stated, 'Maybe'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He was more detailed when Kohli's name came up. Pujaria did not say Kohli was a better player of spin than he, but he said they are at par. 'I would say at par. In terms of stats, his numbers suggest that he's a good player of spin,' he said. When asked about Steve Smith and Kane Williamson, Pujara said: 'They have scored runs against India and their numbers are good, but I don't know, it's very hard to compare myself when it comes to spin, but they are quality players.' Pujara picks Younis Khan over Kohli Next was Younis Khan and Pujara was quick to accept his prowess against spin bowling. 'Younis Khan — I would have to say that he's better than me,' he said. IND vs ENG Tests: Who have been India's best performers in England over the years in red-ball cricket?

India's first-ever Test match was in England, against the home country, in 1932. India have made several Test tours since then. Three times, they've won the series and there have been a couple of draws. In the early decades, England was much stronger and mostly won all series. However, the battle has become a lot more equal in this century. The change in the world order is also reflected in the number of Tests played. Whereas most Test series were of three games, there has only been one such series since 2000. Otherwise, it's been a minimum of four Tests, and of late of course, both sides play five Tests against each other, home and away. Over the years, several Indian players have performed exceedingly well in England. Here's a look at the best of the lot. Rahul Dravid began his Test career with 95 on debut in England in 1996, and since then he's only bettered those returns. He has scored more than 100 runs per Test on average, and nearly always been among the standout batters when India has toured Engl In 2002, he hit a magnificent 148 in seaming conditions in Headingley and then a masterful 217 at The Oval to ensure a drawn series. In 2007, he led the team to a series win, and in 2011, he was a magnificent lone warrior, with three centuries in four Tests as India were blanked 4-0. Sourav Ganguly's Test debut is the stuff of dreams. 131 at Lord's followed by 136 at Trent Bridge established his love affair with the country. He continued to churn out great performances on subsequent tours. He had a 99 and a belligerent 128 in the 2002 series, and important contributions in the 2007 series victory too. In fact, in his last 10 innings in England spanning six Tests, Ganguly wasnever dismissed for single figures. He did an adequate job with the ball too, with the English conditions most conducive to his medium-pacers. He took 8 wickets at an average of 31.8. He wasn't always required to bowl, but when he did, he was reliable, frugal and chipped in with wickets. No Indian batting list can be complete without Sachin Tendulkar in it. He hit his first-ever Test hundred in England aged a tender 17, saving the game for India in the fourth innings. He made 122 in Edgbaston in 1996 when the next highest score in the innings was 18. There were further big scores across series - 177 and 193, and several fifties too. Tendulkar's first tour to England was in 1990, and his last in 2011. Across two decades, he never once had a series in which he didn't make at least a couple of crucial scores. Before the turn of the century, it was Dilip Vengsarkar who flew the Indian flag the highest in England. His career spanned four tours of England, and in each of the first three, he hit a century at Lord's. The last one came in a 2-0 series win by India in a three-match series in 1986. His returns diminished a tad on his final tour in 1990, although he still hit a half-century at Lord's. Vengsarkar played in Indian teams that were often much weaker than England, and seen in that context, his returns are more than excellent. Jasprit Bumrah has only been on two England tours, but such is his quality that two tours are enough to catapult him to the very top of the bowlers' list. No Indian bowler has a better average in England, and by the time he's done, you can safely bet that no Indian bowler will have more wickets than Bumrah either. He's already third on the list, behind Ishant Sharma (48) and Kapil Dev (43). In 15 bowling innings in England, Bumrah has gone wicketless just once, and that was back in 2018 when he was still in his first year of Test will play just three Tests on this tour, or four if India are extremely lucky. Those Tests will be crucial, and the series might hinge on them. Zaheer Khan had two full tours of England. He started in the first Test in 2011, but had to limp off the field, and out of the series, after 13.3 overs. In those, he had taken 2 for 18, and it's one of the great 'what ifs' of Indian cricket on how that series would have panned out if Zaheer was fit and available for India. The eventual scoreline of 4-0 might have looked very different. Zaheer was adequate, rather than standout, in his first tour in 2002. But in 2007, he really turned the heat on England. He bowled India to victory in the only Test that had a result, spurred on by a juvenile jelly beans prank, and continued to be incisive and menacing throughout.

Karun Nair Makes Emotional Comeback To Indian Test Team After 8 Years, Backed By KL Rahul Ahead Of England Series

Indian batter Karun Nair, who is making his return to the national side after eight years, opened up on his recall to the Team India and also received a special message from his ex-Karnataka teammate and close friend, KL Rahul, who will also a part of the Indian squad for England series along with him. Nair could get his first Test appearance in eight years, as India aims for a smooth transition from seniors like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin during a five-match Test series against England away from home. Nair is the only second triple centurion in Indian cricket after legendary opener Virender Sehwag. Nair's inclusion comes at a transitional phase on the back of a dream domestic season last year. The dream season for Vidarbha star concluded with the 863-run season in Ranji Trophy 2024-25, with an average of 53.93, four centuries and two fifties in 16 innings across nine matches. His best score of 135 came in the final and his team emerged victorious. During the warm-up unofficial Tests for India A against England Lions, he scored 259 runs in three innings, including a double ton. A massive highlight of his season was the Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day tournament, where he top-scored with 779 runs in nine matches and eight innings at a stunning average of 389.50 and a strike rate of 124.04, with five centuries and a fifty and best score of 163*.He played a massive role in his team's run to the finals, where they lost to his former team, Karnataka. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 competition, Nair made 255 runs in six innings, averaging 42.50 at a strike rate of 177.08, with three half-centuries and the best score of 77. His team was knocked out in the quarterfinals. Nair had last played a Test for India in March 2017 against Australia and did not get any chances as his form tapered off after a triple ton against England at Chennai in 2016. He has played six Tests overall, having made 374 runs in seven innings. Speaking about his return to the national set-up, Nair said in a video posted on Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) X handle, "Feels very special, very grateful, very fortunate to be able to get this opportunity again. Really looking forward to grabbing this opportunity with both hands. I am sure there will be a lot of feelings, ones I cannot express right now. It will be a special feeling." KL said that he has known Nair for a long time and is well aware of his time in UK, grinding it out in county cricket. "I've known him for a very long time and the months that he spent here in the UK playing cricket and how hard and how lonely it was and for him to be able to do all of that and come back into the Indian team. think it's special for him, for his family, and for friends like us who've seen his journey. So, like I said very inspiring as well and hopefully his experience and his learnings from playing county cricket here will hold him in good stead when he plays the Test matches here," said Rahul. Nair represented Northamptonshire in County Championship in 2023 and 2024 seasons, scoring 736 runs in 10 matches and 14 innings at an average of 56.61, with two centuries and four fifties and best score of 202*. The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
