Which of the newest Dolphins are ‘freak' athletes?

Miami Herald22-05-2025

Since 2005, college football insider Bruce Feldman has released a 'Freak List' in the offseason.
It comprises the top players who've done some exceptional – freakish, if you will – athletic feats prior to the upcoming season.
Check the 2024 list and you see six of the Miami Dolphins.

Of the Dolphins' eight picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, three – defensive tackle Kenneth Grant, offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips – found themselves on Feldman's list. Another three undrafted free agents (UDFAs) – linebacker Eugene Asante, receiver Monaray Baldwin and quarterback Brett Gabbert – wound up there as well.
Grant clocked in at No. 3 on the 'Freak List' due to his rare combination of size and speed. Despite his 6-3, 350-pound-frame, the Michigan defensive tackle still managed to hit 18.75 miles per hour on the GPS as well as press a 115-pound dumbbell more than two dozen times with either hand, according to Feldman.
'Watching KG move is like a work of art,' Michigan's director of strength and conditioning Justin Tress told Feldman. 'He plays and trains violent and explosive.'
Asante, a 6-1, 219-pound linebacker out of Auburn, checked in at No. 33. An UDFA, Asante was described as 'the prototypical heat-seeking missile backer the SEC is known for' following a 2023 season in which he led the Tigers in tackles (86). His freakish traits were his power and explosively, according to Feldman.
'This offseason, he squatted 635 pounds, benched 405 and clocked a 4.48 40,' Feldman wrote. 'He's also had a max velocity of more than 22 mph.'
Drafted to be the missing piece along the Dolphins offensive line, Savaiinaea slotted in at No. 37 on Feldman's list. Not only did he allow two sacks on 889 snaps in 2023, Savaiinaea size and stature immediately stand out. Arizona listed him at 6-4, 334 pounds which is rather impressive considering he has 21-percent body fat, according to Feldman, a sign that hopefully he can move in the Dolphins' fast-paced offense.
Similar to Grant, Savaiinaea also has a unique blend of speed and power.
'This offseason, he ran faster than 19 mph, bench pressed 406 pounds, power cleaned 355 and squatted 532.' Feldman wrote.
Baldwin, who also appeared on the 2023 Freak List alongside Dolphins edge rusher Chop Robinson, might not have the size of Grant or Savaiinaea as Baylor listed the wideout at 5-9, 168 pounds. Still, Baldwin earned the No. 41 spot for his strength – he benched 365 in 2024 – as well as his speed. A GPS clocked him at 23.16 miles per hour, a few ticks faster than his top speed in 2022.
Smack dab in the middle of Feldman's list was Phillips whom the Dolphins selected in the fifth round. The 6-3, 320-pound defensive tackle might not have stats that jump off the page but he's extremely strong which led to his No. 51 selection. The former Maryland standout squatted 665 pounds and power cleaned 365, according to Feldman.
'This kid is a manchild,' Maryland coach Mike Locksley told Feldman. 'He's explosive. He's [former Alabama star-turned-first rounder who was No. 11 on the 2016 Freaks List] Daron Payne. He's a nose tackle, but he's light and so twitchy.'
The very last spot on Feldman's list belongs to Gabbert, the younger brother of former NFL quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Unlike the other players mentioned on this list, the younger Gabbert won't wow with his size (6-0, 210-pounds) or speed (4.79 40). The Miami University quarterback's best trait is his toughness considering he suffered gruesome broken leg in Oct. 2023 that threatened to end his career.
'I felt my fibula go first,' Gabbert recalled to Feldman. 'It sounds gross but you can obviously feel and you can hear it. Then felt my tibia go, and that doesn't feel great. I just remember throwing my helmet off and waving to the sideline just to have them come out there and cover it up because obviously the bone was sticking out.'
What happened next certainly earned him a spot on the 'Freaks List.' Despite originally being given a 12-16 months recovery time frame, Gabbert finished way ahead of schedule and was able to start the RedHawks' 2024 season opener, roughly 10 months after the injury. Gabbert's perseverance was even more impressive considering this wasn't his first major injury; he broke his collarbone at the start of the 2022 season.
'The kid is so competitive, driven, committed,' Miami coach Chuck Martin told Feldman. 'He does everything right all the time. He's like a machine. And it's not just how he comes back from these major injuries multiple times. He'll stand in the pocket and he'll take a hit. His willingness to sacrifice for the team. He plays with no fear.'
Based off Feldman's list alone, it's clear the Dolphins certainly have some athletes on their roster. Fans need to just hope the same traits that landed them on Feldman's list can translate into the NFL.

Coveted Star Visits Michigan Immediately After Ohio State Meetings

Coveted Star Visits Michigan Immediately After Ohio State Meetings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Ohio State Buckeyes are pushing hard to land the top recruit from Texas. But they have Big Ten competition for the prospect. Advertisement One week after five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo officially visited the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio, Ojo will be in Ann Arbor, Michigan to see the Michigan Wolverines during the first full weekend of June. "Felix Ojo has been a busy man. He has already taken official visits to Colorado, Florida, Ohio State and Ole Miss," On3's Chad Simmons wrote. "The five-star offensive tackle out of Texas will be in Ann Arbor this weekend and the Wolverines have some ground to make up. Texas is setting the pace and Ohio State looks to be the Longhorns' top competition heading into the weekend. "Can the Wolverines become a contender? This is their chance. They would love to dip into Texas, like they did with Ty Haywood a year ago, and steal one." Ohio State Buckeyes football head coach Ryan Day© Kyle Robertson/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images One could argue the Buckeyes are trying to "steal" Ojo instead. Based on Simmons' assessment, Ohio State has a better chance of landing the five-star recruit. Advertisement But the question is whether Michigan can move the needle for Ojo this weekend. Ojo had already posted a picture from the beginning of his Ann Arbor visit early Friday morning. Based on the 247 Sports composite rankings, Ojo is the No. 2 offensive tackle and top Texas recruit in the 2026 class. Ojo is also a top 10 recruit overall, sitting at No. 7 on the 247 Sports composite rankings for the entire class. The tackle will play his final high school season at Lake Ridge in Mansfield, Texas this fall. Draymond Green shared insights about his mother's trash-talking skills: 'She talks bad about all the players on my team but annihilates me'

Draymond Green shared insights about his mother's trash-talking skills: 'She talks bad about all the players on my team but annihilates me' originally appeared on Basketball Network. Known for his elite playmaking, defense and leadership, Draymond Green is undoubtedly one the brightest minds in the NBA. Drafted in the second round as the 35th pick, the Michigan State product has certainly surpassed most expectations. Advertisement Born to Mary Babers-Green and Wallace Davis, Draymond was 12 years old when his parents divorced. However, the former DPOY formed a strong bond with his stepfather, Raymond Green, to the extent that he even adopted his last name. Draymond's mother, Mary, had a very influential role in the Warriors star's life. Despite all the financial hurdles, Mama Green ensured her son faced no hurdles in his pursuit of a pro basketball career. That said, she was also his toughest critic. Recently, appearing on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live,' Dray discussed how his mom often schooled him during games, adding that none of his teammates were spared either. 'My mom since I was a child has been the mom who from the stands, she yells, 'You suck.' But the thing about my mom is she talks bad about all the players on my team. She kills them, but she absolutely annihilates me. I've always heard the stories from it where, in the beginning, a parent will almost want to get snappy at her, and as they continue to watch her, they realize how bad she talks about me, they just like, 'Oh, that's no problem, what she's saying about my kid,'' said Draymond, adding how when he often told his mom to stop, she would be mad at him as if he did something wrong. A strict disciplinarian Babers-Green is certainly beaming with joy, considering how far Dray has come in his life. The 6'6' forward defied all odds, whether it was not having the ideal athleticism and agility, or being undersized for his position. The veteran forward carved his niche, making him one of the cornerstones of the Warriors franchise. Advertisement In a 2015 interview with GQ, when asked what about Draymond made her most proud, she had the following to say. 'I'm not big on proud. I'm a spiritual person. So I look at it, if I'm saying I'm proud, I'm taking something away from the Creator. All I did was give birth to him. So I look at as one thing that makes me happy about that he has stayed true to himself. He's rich now. He's a well-off type of guy now. He still uses his money like it was when he had the little money. He still has his same Range Rover that he had when he first got there,' mentioned Mama Green. When asked if she was better than her son when it came to trash-talking, Babers-Green admitted she had become rusty with age but would get him at times. Mary believed a lot of her talking smack had to do with the city of Saginaw, where life was tough, and there was no room for those who complained. Involved in multiple altercations, ejections, fines and suspensions, the 2017 steals leader is also occasionally an official's worst nightmare. Advertisement In recent years, things seem to have gone a little too far, whether it was the punching incident with Jordan Poole or getting into a brawl with Rudy Gobert and Jusuf Nurkic. Nonetheless, the Dubs enforcer was at his best behavior for most of the 2024-25 season, with his defensive prowess shining yet again. Trade Idea Sends Dolphins' Jonnu Smith to Steelers

Trade Idea Sends Dolphins' Jonnu Smith to Steelers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dolphins and the Steelers renewed trade talks surrounding tight end Jonnu Smith earlier this week. The Smith trade conversation has a gone back and forth like a seesaw over the last couple weeks, but it's landed back in the direction of the Dolphins listening to offers. Advertisement The Steelers seemed like a suitable trade partner prior to the signing of Super Bowl champion quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and now it looks like an even better fit. The Steelers do have Pat Freiermuth who has caught at least 60 passes in three of his four years in the NFL with the Steelers. However, the addition of Smith would add another weapon, and upgrade at the position for Rodgers. Pittsburgh has already been active on the trade market this offseason with the addition of DK Metcalf and the departure of George Pickens. Metcalf cost the Steelers a second-round pick and the Pickens trade involved an additional seventh-round pick in exchange for a third-round and fifth-round pick. Now, the Steelers have the opportunity to add Smith to an offense with Metcalf, Robert Woods, Jaylen Warren and rookie Kaleb Johnson at running back, alongside a future Hall of Famer at quarterback. Advertisement Not to mention, Smith has a connection with the Steelers new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Smith coached the tight end in Tennessee, and then was his offensive coordinator. Three years later, Smith was the head coach of the Falcons with the current Dolphins' tight end playing for him. Arthur Smith and Jonnu Smith have plenty of experience together, which is a main reason the Steelers are such a viable trade target for the Dolphins tight end. The proposed trade idea by Bleacher Report's Kurt Benkert for Smith to the Steelers had the Dolphins getting a fourth round pick in return. However, in his other six trade proposals, the Dolphins were getting a mix of fifth or sixth round picks in return. This seems more like the accurate price for the veteran tight end, but it'll ultimately come down to how much the desired team values Smith. Advertisement With all of this being said, it's not a done deal that Smith gets dealt. His agent has said Smith would love to play in Miami in 2025, and Mike McDaniel said he wants Smith on the team. But, football is ultimately a business and only time will tell where Smith ends up playing in 2025. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 7, 2025, where it first appeared.
