British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell believes scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park will be "up and running" by the time the side reach Australia next week. After sitting out Leinster's United Rugby Championship (URC) final victory over the Bulls on Saturday, Gibson-Park - who is widely tipped to be the starting nine come the Test series against the Wallabies - will not feature against Argentina in Dublin on Friday night because of injury.Farrell, though, said the results of a scan on Monday were "pretty positive" and added that those unavailable to face the Pumas in the tour's first game were "all a week or so away from being fit"."Good news on most of the injuries," said Farrell, who will be acting as Lions head coach for the first time on Friday."There's always one or two bumps and bruises that you're trying to nurse, that's the nature of rugby. We're in good shape."
Leicester Tigers scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet has been brought into camp as cover, although England's Alex Mitchell will start at nine at the Aviva Stadium with Wales' Tomos Williams on the bench.Hugo Keenan and Tadhg Furlong also missed out as Leinster claimed their first silverware in four years at Croke Park on Saturday, but the latter will play his first rugby since his side's Investec Champions Cup semi-final defeat by Northampton Saints on 3 May should he come off the bench against Argentina. Furlong, 32, will become a Lion for a third time at the end of a season when he has been dogged by injury and only featured nine times for his province and Ireland."He's fit and ready to go," Farrell said of the tight-head prop, while adding that Scotland and Glasgow centre Huw Jones has trained fully. "He's trained well and as keen as everyone else to get the show on the road."
'Those guys are ahead of the game'
With Leinster, Bath and Leicester Tigers all involved in domestic finals last weekend, and Toulouse's season still ongoing in France, it was a smaller panel that Farrell brought to Portugal last week for a training camp.Although Leinster hooker Ronan Kelleher will be on the bench on Friday night six days after lifting the URC, the remainder of the side picked to face Argentina were present when preparations kicked off."Those guys are ahead of the game. It turned out quite a nice mix for those guys to get ahead of curve [and was] quite a diverse group in terms of combinations and people not playing together," said Farrell."It's nice for that group to have a week where they get settled in and for the other guys to join them on Monday, some on a high, one [Leicester's Ollie Chessum] not, but it's nice for them to have a bit of time to spend with the lads, get to know everyone, and see what's been going on."They've had one training session so it was nice to get everyone together finally."Despite picking from a smaller pool of players, Farrell believes that the talent at his disposal this weekend shows the depth of the touring party."It's exciting. I did an exercise a couple of weeks ago, and I've done it about five times since, of what you think that the Test side could be. You can't even go there because there's such good competition."The exciting thing about Friday night is these guys get to show their team-mates sat in the stand what they're all about. "Ultimately what happens on these tours, you can talk about anything you want to but, these guys, all they're trying to do is gain respect off one another."After facing Argentina, the Lions will fly to Perth and meet Western Force on 28 June with the first Test against Australia taking place in Brisbane on 19 July.

Lions in Dublin 'extra special' for Irish

Lock Tadhg Beirne says taking on Argentina at the Aviva Stadium, while wearing the colours of the British and Irish Lions, will be another "special day" for the squad's Ireland 33-year-old is one of six Irish players who will be on show when the 2025 Lions squad takes the field for the first time against the Pumas on Friday (20:00 BST).Beirne, Bundee Aki and Finlay Bealham all start, while Tadhg Furlong, Ronan Kelleher and Mack Hansen have been named among Andy Farrell's replacements for what is the only game before the squad depart for their three-Test tour of Australia."For us Irish players it's extra special and means a lot to us," said Munster's Beirne."[Playing] where we've had a lot of special days, and then to add playing a game for the Lions to that long list of good days here, is pretty special." With 14 first-timers among the Lions side, for Beirne and his usual Ireland team-mates the week has felt both familiar and very different. "The lead-up to the game is going to feel very similar, doing all the same things that we would do in Irish camp, either going to the same coffee places or preparing for the game the same way."A lot of it is similar but different at the same time, because you're not used to being around the same players that you would be used to, and it makes it a lot more enjoyable."Beirne was part of the Ireland side that just edged Argentina 22-19 at the same venue in November."They really put it to us, and we probably just got over the line in the end," he added."It'll be no different come Friday, it'll be their World Cup final and that's the way we're going to treat it. It's a huge opportunity for us to set the tone for the tour."

That's how it should be – Andy Farrell insists Lions places still up for grabs

Andy Farrell has told his British Irish and Lions stars ahead of Friday's clash with Argentina that selection for the Test series is wide open. Maro Itoje captains the Lions for the first time and is joined in the starting XV by Marcus Smith, who has been picked at full-back behind an all-England half-back partnership of Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith. Ireland prop Tadhg Furlong is given the opportunity to prove his fitness after being named on the bench for the Aviva Stadium showdown having been sidelined since early May because of a calf strain. As many as 14 players could make their Lions debuts before the squad departs for Australia on Saturday and Farrell has demanded they make an immediate impact if they want a shot at facing the Wallabies. Our team to face Argentina in Dublin! 🦁 #Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) June 18, 2025 'I did an exercise a couple of weeks ago, and I've done it about five times since, of choosing what the Test side could be,' the head coach said. 'You actually can't even go there because there's such good competition and that's how it should be. 'The exciting thing about Friday night is these guys get to show the team-mates who are sat in the stand what they're all about. 'We are looking for cohesion, connection and an ability to attack the game from the off. 'You can give yourself any excuse as far as time together is concerned, but we've had good prep and if you want to be a good Lions player you've got to hit your straps straight from the off.' Furlong has been troubled by calf and hamstring injuries all season, forcing him to miss the entire 2024 autumn series and all but one match of the Six Nations. If fit, the three-time Lions tourist will be favourite to start at tighthead prop in the Test series against the Wallabies, but first he must negotiate the curtain raiser against a Pumas side ranked fifth in the world. 'Tadhg is fit and ready to go and train well and as keen as everyone else to get the show on the road,' Farrell said. Duhan van der Merwe is another player looking to demonstrate his fitness ahead of Saturday's departure Down Under having been limited to just 11 minutes of action since the Six Nations because of ankle ligament damage. ¡Vamos Los Pumas! Toda la información: — Unión Argentina de Rugby (@unionargentina) June 18, 2025 The Scotland wing is part of a heavy duty threequarter line that features England try machine Tommy Freeman and bulldozing centres Bundee Aki and Sione Tuipulotu. Farrell delivered positive fitness updates on Jamison Gibson-Park (glute), Huw Jones (Achilles) and Hugo Keenan (calf), stating that all three should be available for the the first match in Australia against Western Force on Saturday week. Argentina were also the warm-up opponents in 2005 when they held Sir Clive Woodward's Lions to a 25-25 draw in Cardiff.
