St. FX study links oil and gas industry pollution to negative health outcomes

A new peer-reviewed study from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S., used census, health and other data to examine the health impacts of pollution from the oil and gas sector in Alberta.
Although there are known effects on health from air pollution, the lead author of the study said there's been a lack of research in Canada compared to that in the U.S. on impacts from the oil and gas industry.
"Now we can put a number … on it," said Martin Lavoie, with the university's FluxLab team of environmental science researchers.
The study found the odds of having negative respiratory and cardiovascular health outcomes increase by nine to 21 per cent depending on the number of oil and gas wells a person lives near.
Still, more field measurements and data on pollutants are needed, Lavoie said. He pointed to previous research the lab conducted that found emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, had been significantly underestimated.
"There is a lot we don't know," Lavoie said. "When we start having better measurements … we learn that [sometimes] the picture we thought we had is different than actual reality."
Alberta accounts for more than 80 per cent of Canada's oil production and the province was responsible for 61 per cent of the country's natural gas production in 2023, the study said.
The study also estimated where pollutants were concentrated and the demographics of people who lived near oil and gas wells.
Those living in rural areas and Indigenous people were more likely to be exposed to activity from the industry.
The isolation of some of these communities may be a reason for the lack of research, said Dr. Joe Vipond, past president of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment advocacy group.
"If the oilsands and its tailing ponds existed within the city limits of Calgary, you'd be damn sure that we'd have studies looking at what the health impacts of that are."
Population-wide studies like the one done by St. FX are also important because they help identify broader trends that can be hard to see on an individual level, said Vipond, who is also an emergency physician in Calgary.
For example, if a patient experiences an asthma attack, the factors that caused it are "literally impossible to determine … at the bedside," he said.
Vipond hopes this study will spur more research into the health impacts of oil and gas industry pollution.
Stricter regulation on processes like flaring and venting that release pollutants could help reduce emissions and protect those most vulnerable, Lavoie said. Flaring is the burning off of excess natural gas associated with oil production, while venting is the controlled release of unburned gases into the atmosphere.

'We heard that if anyone could save my father's life without open heart surgery, it would be him.' Wood saved his father's life, according to Dilwari, and compelled the family to 'pay that gratitude forward'. And so, on Thursday, a record $60-million donation to the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation to establish the Dilawri Cardiovascular Institute was announced. The donation, a gift from the Dilawri Automotive Group's charitable foundation, is the largest in VGH and UBC Hospital history, and will fund the new institute, led by Wood. 'Like so many families, ours has been personally touched by heart disease,' said Dilawri. 'It's a cause that hits close to home.' Wood's vision, of a leading cardiovascular institute in Vancouver, was bold. 'Why can't we create the Mayo Clinic of the North right here in Vancouver?' Wood said at Thursday's event. Some $35 million of the donation will be dedicated to help fund a proposed new multi-use tower at Oak Street and West 12th Avenue, and $25 million will be available immediately for an innovation fund to establish a national cardiovascular research and clinical care network with partner sites throughout Europe and the U.S. Wood said the institute will have 15 centres that will be ready to treat patients immediately, and will include centres for Indigenous heart health, women's heart health, youth heart health, and core research areas such as a centre for AI, data science and imaging, as well as the centre for cardiovascular innovation. 'We are going to transform how we care for patients. Replacing heart valves on patients, and going home three hours later — using new technologies to treat heart rhythm problems before they become permanent, so you can go on to live a long and healthy life, minimally invasive heart surgery using robots and small incisions,' said Wood. Wood said the Dilawri Cardiovascular Institute will function on a 'hub and spoke' model, with research and treatment partnerships across North America and Europe, and will 'disrupt' the long distance between research and the implementation of new treatments. The donation is also the largest in the history of the Dilawri Foundation, which has supported Hospital For Sick Kids in Toronto since 2012 through the Dilawri Patient Amenities Endowment Fund, and the Dilawri Patients, Populations and Policy Research Neighbourhood. Patriarch Ram Dilawri, a trained mechanic, immigrated to Canada in the 1980s, where he did a number of jobs while bringing up three sons including Ajay, who was born and raised in Ottawa. The three brothers, Kap, Tony and Ajay, were entrepreneurial, and got their first opportunity in business in 1984 when they purchased a Honda dealership in Regina with their father. The dealership had a service station and a tiny two-car showroom, but became the jumping-off point for the Dilawri Group of Companies. The Dilwaris established themselves in B.C. in 2010 when they took ownership of Vancouver's first Porsche dealership and service centre at 1718 West 3rd Ave. In 2013, they acquired Vancouver Honda, located at 850 S.W. Marine Dr., a move that made them the largest Honda dealer in Canada. Dilawri is now Canada's largest automotive company, with 4,000 employees and 76 automotive dealerships across Canada, and employs more than 2,000 people at 24 dealerships in B.C. In 2018, the Dilawri Foundation committed $5 million to the Vancouver Public Library Foundation, which was at the time, the largest-ever donation to a public library in Canada. Canada News Centre 06 Jun 2025, 01:10 GMT+10 The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the presence of Dermo (also known as Perkinsosis) in oyster samples collected in Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. Dermo does not pose a risk to human health or food safety, but it can cause increased oyster mortality and decreased growth rates. This is the first confirmed case of Dermo in Newfoundland and Labrador. To limit the spread of the disease, the CFIA, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture are working together with stakeholders, provincial partners, and Indigenous communities to monitor the situation and take necessary action. These actions are part of the Government of Canada's One Health approach to prepare for, detect, and manage animal diseases. In addition to existing robust protective measures and increased animal surveillance, the CFIA, DFO and the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture continue to conduct tracing activities and testing of oysters to gain insight into the presence of Dermo in the area. At this time, these response measures include: applying movement controls to oysters in the area; further investigating the potential source of the detection; engaging scientists, producers and harvesters to continue to monitor mollusc health, including notifying CFIA or the Province of sick oysters or when decreased rates of growth or increased mortalities are observed; and ensuring that information regarding detection and movement control information is available to producers.
