Cumbernauld Colts secure Lowland safety with final day win as boss hails 'magnificent' display

Daily Record24-04-2025

Cumbernauld Colts are celebrating after securing their place in the Lowland League with a final day win over high-flyers Linlithgow Rose. John Doyle's side could have found themselves in a relegation play-off if they had lost at Broadwood, but they produced a fine showing to grab a 2-0 win, thanks to a Callum Wilson double. The win lifted them up to 14th, a point clear of nearest rivals Gretna 2008 and Berwick Rangers, while it is Gala Fairydean Rovers, two points back, who occupy the play-off spot at the end of the campaign. And Doyle said: 'It is a relief for everybody involved. 'We could have found ourselves in a play-off, so it was an excellent feeling at the final whistle, and the scenes were brilliant as well. 'We had our player of the year awards after it so it made for a far better night all round. 'A point would have done us but to go and do a wee bit extra is great because it pushes us up a few places. 'Linlithgow have beaten Caledonian Braves and EK in the last few weeks so that shows you how big a result it is. They went with a strong team and we knew we had to be on it. 'The guys were magnificent to a man. We limited them to few chances and took ours when they came along. 'I know [Rose boss] Gordon Herd well and he did us a turn earlier in the season by allowing us to take Liam Allison on loan so that massively helped us out.' Doyle was only appointed in January following the resignation of David Proctor and then Craig Malcolm earlier in the campaign. The club was bottom of the pile at that time and Doyle hopes they can come back stronger next term He said: 'I went into the job knowing there was a chance we could go down, so it was something of a longer-term thing for me. 'Staying in the division is the big thing and we'll hope to kick on next season.'

Derby meeting jockey excited to make Epsom debut against role model Hollie Doyle

Isobelle Chalmers lines up in the Betfred 3YO Dash on Sandscreendeliverd, trained by Peter Crate. It comes a day after the teenager competes in an all-apprentice event at Goodwood Racecourse A teenage jockey is making her debut at Epsom's Derby meeting after taking every piece of advice from record-breaker Hollie Chalmers has her first ride around the famous track on Peter Crate-saddled Sandscreendeliverd in the Betfred 3YO Dash tomorrow. Run over what is considered to be the fastest five furlongs in the world, the event takes place just over an hour before the £1.5million Betfred Derby. Riding off 7st 9lb, her lowest in the last 12 months, 18-year-old Chalmers will come up against Doyle, who partners Kevin Ryan trainee Cape Sovereign. ‌ In May, Doyle claimed the record for the most winners ridden by a female jockey in Britain on Brindavan at Ascot. The 28-year-old's triumph was number 1,023 in a career which saw her make a Royal Ascot breakthrough in 2020 and in a Classic on Nashwa two years later. ‌ "Hollie is my role model and I've known her for a long time through my job as an apprentice at Andrew Balding's," said Chalmers. "She has watched some of my races back and helped me improve on little things, as well as in the gym as I'm light and a similar size to her. "She's so down to earth and it's great to have such a successful jockey to learn from." Chalmers kicked off her career in November 2024 by stunning the Lingfield opposition at 125-1 on Ashford Hill, a horse owned by her mother. The longshot lines up in the BetGoodwin Best Odds Guaranteed Fillies' Handicap at Goodwood this evening, on an all-apprentice racecard. "She's in form and back at six furlongs, so should have a chance," added Chalmers, a graduate of pony racing. Among her opponents on the night is Jack Doughty, who has a chance in each of the six races as he seeks his 100th career winner. Five of them, including Port Erin in the opening Bet Clever BetGoodwin Apprentice Handicap, are for his main employer Tony Carroll. Doughty rode out his claim on the trainer's sprinter Pop Dancer at Brighton on May 27 and he hopes to hit another milestone in West Sussex. "It would be great to reach 100 winners," he said. "At my age I feel very lucky to be doing this job and Tony has been very supportive." ‌ The raceday which first began in 2022 was created to give apprentices opportunities and celebrate emerging talent in the weighing room. It runs on a points-based system with a totaliser to decide who will be crowned Goodwood's leading apprentice, before DJ act Groove Armada takes to the stage after the thoroughbred action has concluded. Senior Racing Executive at the Professional Jockeys Association, Adam McNamara, said: "It cannot be understated how beneficial it is to our apprentice jockeys to have the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a big crowd on a premier track."

Awesome £650,000 horse with ‘a hell of an engine' instantly made Royal Ascot favourite after astonishing debut

They couldn't cut her price fast enough 'WOW!' Awesome £650,000 horse with 'a hell of an engine' instantly made Royal Ascot favourite after astonishing debut THIS awesome £650,000 horse with 'a hell of an engine' was instantly made a Royal Ascot favourite after an astonishing debut. Word had been strong for Karl Burke's Wathnan-owned two-year-old filly Zelaina ahead of her bow over 5f at Nottingham. 1 Zelaina was instantly made a Royal Ascot favourite after absolutely blistering debut at Nottingham Credit: Getty But even jockey James Doyle was taken aback by the ease with which she obliterated rivals after bursting out the gates. Making all, she sauntered over the line ahead of 4-1 Secret Oath, the three-quarter length margin of victory flattering the runner-up. Punters branded the breeze-up buy an 'absolute weapon' and said she was 'the one we were waiting for' - as bookies immediately made her favourite for the Queen Mary. Burke and Doyle teamed up to win it with Leovanni last year. And Zelaina is now Ascot-bound for the Group 2 on Wednesday, the second day of the five-day festival. Clearly buzzing afterwards, Wathnan's retained rider Doyle said: "She'd been doing the right things at home. "She wasn't 100 per cent coming here, she's a had a couple of things that meant she needed an easy time. "But Karl said she's very fast and she's shown she has an engine. "She caught me by surprise out the gates - then up into that stride and away she went. "She's quite hot so we'll do a few things to iron that out ahead of Ascot. "But she's got a hell of a big engine and a plenty of pace. "I was the last person to pull up but she just stood so I let her relax then just trotted her back. "She took quite a blow at the furlong pole but I expect her to come along fitness-wise. "She didn't have the perfect prep coming into today… so expect her to improve a lot." Bookies introduced Zelaina as 4-1 joint-fav alongside Lady Iman. But they were immediately forced to cut her and now she is a best 7-2 fav with the likes of William Hill. Liverpool parade crash victims named for first time after restrictions lifted

Paul Doyle, 53, is charged with seven offences in connection with the crash, which happened on Water Street in the city centre as thousands of Liverpool fans gathered for the football team celebrations just after 6pm on May 26. Four people who were injured when a car was driven into packed crowds at Liverpool's Premier League victory parade can be named after reporting restrictions were lifted by a court. Paul Doyle, 53, is charged with seven offences in connection with the crash, which happened on Water Street in the city centre as thousands of Liverpool fans gathered for the football team celebrations just after 6pm on May 26. Doyle is accused of the unlawful wounding with intent of Simon Nash, 52, causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent to Susan Passey, 77, and Christine Seeckts, 66, and the attempted GBH of Ethan Gillard, 18. An order preventing publication of their identities was put in place when he first appeared before magistrates in Liverpool on Friday. Today, Tuesday, June 3, Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC lifted restrictions, which had been made under Section 46 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999. Doyle is charged with another count of wounding with intent and a second count of attempted GBH, which both relate to children, for whom reporting restrictions remain in place. Doyle is also charged with dangerous driving. He is alleged to have driven his Ford Galaxy Titanium dangerously on roads between his home address in Burghill Road and Water Street. He was not required to attend the court hearing on Tuesday. On Friday, Doyle appeared before magistrates in the morning, before a crown court appearance in the afternoon. Judge Menary fixed a trial date for November 24 and remanded the defendant in custody ahead of a plea hearing on August 14. Earlier this week, Merseyside Police said the number of people reported injured after the incident had risen to 109. Four people remained in hospital on Monday.
