Humans Are Evolving Before Our Eyes on The Tibetan Plateau
Humans are not yet done cooking. We're continuing to evolve and adjust to the world around us, the records of our adaptations written in our bodies.
We know that there are some environments that can make us unwell. Mountain climbers often succumb to altitude sickness – the body's reaction to a significant drop in atmospheric pressure, which means less oxygen is taken in with each breath.
And yet, in high altitudes on the Tibetan Plateau, where oxygen levels in the air people breathe are notably lower than lower altitudes, human communities thrive.
In the more than 10,000 years the region has been settled, the bodies of those living there have changed in ways that allow the inhabitants to make the most of an atmosphere that for most humans would result in not enough oxygen being delivered via blood cells to the body's tissues, a condition known as hypoxia.
"Adaptation to high-altitude hypoxia is fascinating because the stress is severe, experienced equally by everyone at a given altitude, and quantifiable," anthropologist Cynthia Beall of Case Western Reserve University in the US told ScienceAlert.
"It is a beautiful example of how and why our species has so much biological variation."
Beall has been studying the human response to hypoxic living conditions for years. In research published in October 2024, she and her team unveiled some of the specific adaptations in Tibetan communities: traits that help the blood deliver oxygen.
To unlock this discovery, the researchers delved into one of the markers of what we call evolutionary fitness: reproductive success. Women who deliver live babies are those who pass on their traits to the next generation.
The traits that maximize an individual's success in a given environment are most likely to be found in women who are able to survive the stresses of pregnancy and childbirth.
These women are more likely to give birth to more babies; and those babies, having inherited survivability traits from their mothers, are also more likely to survive to adulthood, and pass the traits on to the next generation.
That's natural selection at work, and it can be a bit strange and counterintuitive; in places where malaria is common, for example, the incidence of sickle cell anemia is high, because it involves a gene that protects against malaria.
Beall and her team made a study of 417 women between the ages of 46 and 86 years who have lived all their lives in Nepal above altitudes of around 3,500 meters (11,480 feet). The researchers recorded the number of live births, ranging between 0 and 14 per woman for an average of 5.2, as well as health and physical information and measurements.
Among the things they measured were levels of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for delivering oxygen to tissues. They also measured how much oxygen was being carried by the hemoglobin. Interestingly, the women who demonstrated the highest rate of live births had hemoglobin levels that were neither high nor low, but average for the testing group.
But the oxygen saturation of the hemoglobin was high. Together, the results suggest that the adaptations are able to maximize oxygen delivery to cells and tissues without thickening the blood – a result that would place more stress on the heart as it struggles to pump a higher viscosity fluid more resistant to flow.
"Previously we knew that lower hemoglobin was beneficial, now we understand that an intermediate value has the highest benefit. We knew that higher oxygen saturation of hemoglobin was beneficial, now we understand that the higher the saturation the more beneficial. The number of live births quantifies the benefits," Beall said.
"It was unexpected to find that women can have many live births with low values of some oxygen transport traits if they have favorable values of other oxygen transport traits."
The women with the highest reproductive success rate also had a high rate of blood flow into the lungs, and their hearts had wider than average left ventricles, the chamber of the heart responsible for pumping oxygenated blood into the body.
Taken all together, these traits increase the rate of oxygen transport and delivery, enabling the human body to make the most of the low oxygen in the air respired.
It's important to note that cultural factors can play a role, too. Women who start reproducing young and have long marriages seem to have a longer exposure to the possibility of pregnancy, which also increases the number of live births, the researchers found.
Even taking that into account, however, the physical traits played a role. Nepalese women with physiologies most similar to women in unstressed, low altitude environments tended to have the highest rate of reproductive success.
"This is a case of ongoing natural selection," Beall said. "Understanding how populations like these adapt gives us a better grasp of the processes of human evolution."
The research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

If you look just right, the Sun appears to be opening its mouth and laughing at us. (We can't imagine why.) As ScienceAlert reports, this colossal gash forming the mouth is what's known as "coronal hole," which occurs when the star's magnetic field opens up and allows a gust of charged solar wind to rush out, leaving the area it just left much cooler and giving it that gaping look. As for the eyes, those are smaller sunspots to the hole's north, giving this solar face a look of surprise. When looking at the Sun from Earth — which we recommend only doing with special glasses or instruments, by the way — you won't notice its wide grin unless viewing it on the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum. From that wavelength, a different picture emerges: one with a wide, open mouth that laughs at our little lives back on terra firma. A fairly regular occurrence, coronal holes like this one can cause strong geomagnetic activity and even the kind of "storms" that send out bursts of charged particles towards Earth, often resulting in beautiful auroras or communication systems failures. Space weather reports indicate that this latest coronal hole is indeed causing such a storm, though it's unclear whether any tech glitches will follow in its wake. The images we're seeing of the Sun's cheeky grin don't do justice to just how huge it is. As ScienceAlert notes, this coronal hole is as wide as five Jupiters lined up side-by-side, which would put it at about 434,000 miles across. Interestingly, this is not the first time a five-Jupiter-width geomagnetic chasm has opened up to form a creepy grin on the Sun. Almost exactly 18 months ago — not long before the so-called "solar maximum," or period when the Sun's geomagnetic activity is at its peak, in October 2024 — a slightly more devilish smile was seen on our star as it blew out its ultracharged breath towards Earth. Scientists Studied DNA From 7,100-Year-Old Remains—and Found a Mysterious Ghost Lineage
Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: Ancient DNA—from the bones of an individual found at an archaeological site in southern China—reveals the presence of a 'ghost lineage' connected to the peoples of Tibet. This ghost lineage remained uncharacterized until now, and after further analysis, it was determined to be unrelated to other lineages from the region. More sampling from ancient and modern people living in the region where this skeleton was found could reveal more about its origins and the origins of Tibetan groups in general. The Xingyi archaeological site in Central Yunnan, China, was the final resting place for many deceased, but paleoanthropologist Tianyi Wang was haunted by the skeletal remains of one Early Neolithic individual in particular. The remains, which once belonged to a woman who had been buried with her knees to her chin, had a secret—her 7,100-year-old bones deepened the mystery of a ghost lineage in Tibet's past. Ancient DNA is usually fragmented, with parts having degraded over hundreds (and often thousands) of years. But there was enough information in the genes of this particular individual to identify a lineage that had previously gone uncharacterized. When exactly this lineage diverged from other East Asian lineages is unknown, but it diverged deeply, and is ancestral to Tibet. Yunnan is located at the crossroads of southern China, southeast Asia, and the Tibetan plateau, making it an ideal place to research the genetic diversity of ancient peoples that now only live on in the ancestry of modern humans. Many questions have gone unanswered about the origins of existing East Asian populations—which include groups from the Tibetan Plateau and speakers of Austroasiatic languages predominantly spoken in Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam and Cambodia. The phantom lineage in Tibetan DNA is unrelated to any other. 'Some have suggested an archaic origin due to high frequencies of a Denisovan [lineage] in Tibetan populations and the physical presence of Denisovans on the plateau,' Wang and her team said in a study recently published in Science Advances. 'Others have proposed a modern origin related to Paleolithic Eurasians, including an early Asian lineage.' So far, no source population of the ghost lineage has been found, which makes it difficult to figure out from whom Tibetans originated. Ancient DNA from the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayan arc between Tibet and the north of India was previously found to have East Asian ancestry from both the Yellow River Valley in lowland East Asia and the Amur River Valley in inner Mongolia. However, this ancestry are unrelated to the ghost lineage. It is unclear how populations in East and Southeast Asia shifted as hunting and foraging made way for the rise of agriculture. In mainland Southeast Asia, the ancestors of Australasian speakers are linked to agriculture and rice farming, since rice paddies thrive in the humid, tropical climate. The descendants of these ancient people now live in Southeast Asia, southern China, and India. Not enough genetic sampling has been done on the ancient populations of southern China, which may be part of the reason why the origins of the ghost lineage are so elusive. Radiocarbon dating on the bones of the Xingyi individual told researchers that she had lived 1,500 years earlier than others buried at the site. Genomic sequencing and DNA analysis revealed more about where, and who, she came from. Her ancestry was compared to many ancient human groups, and unsurprisingly, she has the closest links to both ancient and modern East and Southeast Asian populations. Her DNA was significantly different from ancient individuals from northern and southern China, who are related to modern East and Southeast Asians. Wang and her team think the ghost lineage she carries diverged from other populations in Asia some 40,000 years ago. During the Pleistocene epoch, when much of Earth froze over, people with this lineage must have survived in southern regions with a more stable climate. The Xiaodong rock shelter in Yunnan has a 43,500-year history of human occupation that they think could be linked with Asian ancestries that diverged deeply—possibly including the Tibetan ghost lineage. '[The Xingyi specimen] shows the existence of a second deeply diverged Asian population that lived in southern latitudes during the mid-Holocene and reveals […] ancestry that affected ancient and present-day Tibetan populations,' the team said. The ghost lineage took its secrets to the grave, and for now—even after the excavations—it seems to be keeping them there. GOP Rep's ‘We Are All Going To Die' Mentality Inspired Quite The Observation ... And It's Bleak
People are still grappling with shocking remarks made by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), whose response to constituents concerned about proposed cuts to Medicaid has been panned as 'callous' and 'evil.' Ernst has since defended her comments, insisting that she's 'very compassionate' — but many online aren't convinced. During a town hall event in Parkersburg, Iowa, on Friday, Ernst was grilled by furious constituents who expressed concerns about a House-passed GOP bill that includes massive cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs. The bill is now under consideration in the Senate. While answering a question about the potential changes to the eligibility and work requirements for Medicaid and food assistance under the legislation dubbed 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' one person from the audience yelled out, 'People will die.' Ernst responded: 'People are not ― well, we all are going to die. So, for heaven's sakes, folks.' She received wide backlash for her response, but the criticism didn't seem to bother her much. She later doubled down and posted a non-apology video, seemingly filmed in a cemetery, in which she mocked the backlash by saying she thought everyone in the auditorium already understood that 'we are all going to perish from this earth.' 'So I apologize. And I'm really, really glad that I did not have to bring up the subject of the tooth fairy as well,' she jeered. Deepak Sarma, inaugural distinguished scholar in the public humanities at Case Western Reserve University, offered a bleak observation about Ernst's town hall comments and the remarks she made in her subsequent non-apology video: They are reminiscent of a 'monarchy/royalty where the masses are to fend [for] themselves.' Sarma charged that Trump, who's facing several lawsuits for exceeding his authority, has 'aspirations' to be a king, and that GOP leaders, like Ernst, 'think that they will also earn/achieve/be awarded nobility if they remain loyal.' Republicans have argued that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act — which looks to slash $1 trillion in cuts to federal health and food programs — targets individuals who don't meet eligibility requirements for food assistance and Medicaid. But the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that the bill would result in an estimated 8 million fewer Americans having health insurance. When pressed on Monday about her responses to constituents concerned about the grave consequences the bill would have on millions of people, Ernst defended her retort at the town hall, telling reporters: 'I'm very compassionate, and you need to listen to the entire conversation.' Sarma said that Ernst's claim that she's 'very compassionate' is 'aspirational, at best, and intentionally delusional, at worst.' Ernst's comments to reporters on Monday were meant to 'placate her constituents,' and to create a sound bite that she can use to 'defend her cruelty,' Sarma said, adding: 'Her use of the term is manipulative and an attempt to hijack the narrative.' Sarma said that Ernst's statements about people dying is proof that she and other GOP leaders view their constituents — including MAGA supporters — as 'mere commoners.' 'Ernst has called her constituents 'baskets of deplorables' in indirect and underhanded [ways],' they said. Other experts, political figures and commenters have shared similar sentiments. Some people on X, formerly Twitter, argued that Ernst demonstrated a 'disdain'toward her constituents with her responses to concerns about Medicaid cuts, and that her response that she's 'compassionate' was condescending. Nathan Sage, a Democrat who's seeking the party's nomination to run against Ernst in the 2026 Senate election, said in a statement, per the Des Moines Register, that Ernst is 'not even trying to hide her contempt for us.' David Axelrod, ex-senior adviser to former President Barack Obama, told CNN's Jake Tapper on Monday that Ernst's non-apology video was 'really insensitive' and 'politically stupid.' Christopher Hansen, a licensed professional counselor with Thriveworks who specializes in relationships and coping skills, said that he believes the backlash to Ernst's comments is likely due to the fact that her remarks 'reinforced a lot of people's belief that people in places of power and the government do not really care about them.' Hansen doesn't believe Ernst's initial 'we all are going to die' response at her town hall event was necessarily intended to be malicious, but he thought it was nonetheless 'not appropriate and well thought out.' 'It does not give the country confidence when representatives and others don't seem to understand the impact on the people receiving these services,' he told HuffPost, noting that people are 'experiencing anxiety, anger and some may even feel like they're in limbo, waiting for the next shoe to drop.'
