Gautam Budh Nagar to host weeklong events to gear up for Int'l Yoga Day
GREATER NOIDA Gautam Budh Nagar will observe 11th International Day of Yoga on June 21 and a district-wide Yoga Week between June 15 and 20 in compliance with the ministry of AYUSH guidelines, district officials said.
District magistrate Manish Kumar Verma on Thursday chaired a preparatory meeting at the collectorate, instructing concerned officials to ensure all arrangements are in place through inter-departmental coordination.
Students, NCC and NSS cadets, and NGO and yoga institute volunteers, entrepreneurs, and residents will participate in daily morning yoga sessions, officials said.
'We should aim for mass participation and a spirit of teamwork. Yoga sessions will be organised in schools, colleges, panchayats, block and tehsil headquarters, and public parks. Daily sessions during Yoga Week should follow the common yoga protocol under trained instructors,' the DM said.
The main International Yoga Day celebration on June 21 will be held from 6am to 8am at various locations including parks and public grounds across the district—right from panchayat levels to block, tehsil, and district headquarters. Trained yoga instructors will supervise the sessions, officials said.
Special emphasis has been laid on organising yoga activities at culturally significant locations and scenic sites near rivers like Yamuna and Hindon, as well as lakes, ponds, and Amrit Sarovars.
The DM also encouraged incorporating a 'Harit Yoga' initiative, wherein participants will plant a tree alongside performing yoga to promote environmental consciousness.
'Special sites like the Yamuna and Hindon riverbanks, historical locations, and scenic ponds and lakes must be prioritised for hosting sessions, keeping tourism promotion in mind. The concept of Harit Yoga should be highlighted—alongside yoga practice, every participant must plant at least one sapling, combining wellness with environmental responsibility,' the DM added.
The DM also proposed identifying two parks in the district to be developed as dedicated 'Yoga Parks' for year-round activities. He suggested building lasting infrastructure to carry forward the legacy of the International Day of Yoga. Besides, to engage youth, officials have been asked to organise national and international social media-based yoga competitions and encourage participants to share their progress online.
The participants in the meeting included officials from ayurvedic and unani department, education department, senior yoga instructors, among others.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed satisfaction over the overwhelming public response to the International Yoga Day celebrations to be held across Andhra Pradesh on June 21. Reviewing the preparations for the day on Tuesday, Mr. Naidu noted the encouraging registration figures and enthusiastic participation in the yoga practice sessions across districts. The State's ambitious goal was to create a Guinness World Record by organising the largest-ever yoga gathering with full public involvement and meticulous planning, he said. 'The government has set a target of involving five lakh participants in Visakhapatnam on June 21. Also, the government aims at a zero inconvenience policy. All traffic and logistical challenges must be proactively addressed, especially in the light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit. Clear guidance should be given in advance to the attendees from all the regions, regarding where to go and participate,' the Chief Minister said. Mr. Naidu said that two major pre-events should be organised to mobilise and prepare the public. On June 7, awareness rallies should be taken out in every village and locality. On June 14, mass yoga sessions should be conducted at one-lakh locations across the State, including in all the educational institutions. Mr. Naidu said that public awareness and engagement must peak ahead of the main event, ensuring people were motivated, informed, and ready to participate with full energy. The officials briefed the Chief Minister on the events conducted so far as part of the Yoga Month, and the diverse daily themed activities being held in the districts, which received positive feedback. 'Contingency plans are in place should there be rain. An additional covered venue using German hangars has been prepared to avoid disruption,' they said. Special Chief Secretary (Health) M.T. Krishna Babu said that yoga registrations were coming in from every village. 'Registrations have exceeded the expectations, with 1.77 crore people already registered out of the two crore target. Those participating for three days will automatically receive yoga participation certificates, also available via app. The participants include students, women, SHG members, and the general public from diverse backgrounds,' he said. The State identified 5,353 master trainers (target was 2,600), who had already trained 1.48 lakh individuals (surpassing the 1.25 lakh target). Yoga competitions also met their intended participation goals, he added.

Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth on Tuesday announced the planned expansion of National Cadet Corps (NCC) by three lakh cadets across the country, with several States already extending their concurrence and committing to fast-track the necessary training infrastructure. After inaugurating the Special Joint State Representatives and Additional/Deputy Directors General Conference of the NCC in Bhopal, Mr. Seth highlighted its role in nation building and youth development. Listing the initiatives, he spoke about the inclusion of ex-servicemen as NCC instructors, providing new employment avenues for veterans and lauded the NCC's active involvement in national campaigns such as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Naya Savera Scheme, and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. He also congratulated the NCC Mount Everest Expedition team for their successful summit on May 18 describing it as a powerful example of cadet courage and resilience. Calling for continued Centre-State collaboration, Mr. Seth urged the States to fulfil their commitments towards manpower, infrastructure, and funding to support the expansion. 'Director General NCC Lieutenant General Gurbirpal Singh outlined the Corps' achievements and roadmap ahead, with a focus on establishing robust training and camping infrastructure nationwide. He emphasised the goal of fostering greater youth participation and improving cadet performance,' said a release. Among those present on the occasion were Ministers of Education and Youth Affairs & Sports, senior Defence Ministry officials, State Department representatives, and NCC heads from all States.

River of dreams: Delhi schools wade into Yamuna clean-up, campaign will run from July to March
New Delhi: In an initiative to involve young minds in environmental conservation, the directorate of education has launched a nearly year-long awareness campaign, Maa Yamuna Swachhta Abhiyan — A Clean Yamuna Awareness Campaign. It aims to sensitise and educate school students about the importance of cleaning the Yamuna and actively involve them in environmental conservation efforts. The campaign, which will run from July 2025 to March 2026, includes a series of interactive and creative school-based activities. DoE has also encouraged schools to collaborate with their respective National Service Scheme (NSS) units and engage with Delhi Jal Board and local education officials to organise talks, presentations and awareness sessions. Schools are expected to report their activities on a monthly basis. The campaign aims to educate and inspire students across Delhi schools about the pressing need to clean the Yamuna river and actively engage them in efforts to protect the environment. Proposed by Delhi education minister Ashish Sood and supported by the directorate of education, the campaign will unfold as a series of structured activities and events spread over several months. As per the circular issued, these activities will include essay writing competitions in July 2025 to express the significance of a clean Yamuna, followed by drawing and painting contests in Aug that will encourage students to creatively depict the river's plight and beauty. In Sept, schools will host speeches, debates and skits focusing on water pollution and conservation. The awareness drive will peak in Oct with 'Clean Yamuna' pledge drives and awareness walks, allowing students to step beyond classrooms and take a more visible role in advocating for the river's revival. Additionally, schools will be encouraged to organise cultural programmes related to the Yamuna during their annual functions, providing a platform to further reinforce the message of ecological responsibility through music, dance and drama. To ensure the smooth execution of the campaign, DoE has asked schools to collaborate with their local NSS units. Schools may also partner with Delhi Jal Board and other education department officials to host motivational talks, presentations and interactive sessions, further enriching the educational experience for students. Monthly reports of all conducted activities—along with photographs and short videos—are to be compiled and submitted by the schools' physical education teachers to the directorate. A structured reporting format has been provided, which will help track the participation of schools, the number of students involved, and the visual documentation of events. "With this initiative, Delhi govt not only seeks to instil environmental awareness among students but also empowers them to become active agents of change. Maa Yamuna Swachhta Abhiyan stands as a beacon of civic engagement, creativity and education, proving that the path to a cleaner future can begin in school corridors and lead all the way to the banks of a once-glorious river," said an official.
