Players laying down a marker and encouraging others in their position to raise their game is exactly what Lions had coach Andy Farrell will be hoping for on this tour.
It was certainly true of loose-head prop Ellis Genge with his standout performance against Argentina in Dublin, and Pierre Schoeman off the bench too.

''Genge had an amazing game," said Schoeman.
"He's an amazing bloke - but we're competitive with everything. 'We're competitive in the gym. Even jokes and banter... who can stay in the ice bath the longest? Andrew Porter as well.
"That can really rub off; you're sharpening your swords or your axes together. You have to be the best version of yourself and add value to the Viking ship going to its destination.''

England players driven by 'humbling' loss to Wallabies
Star utility back Elliot Daly says England were "humbled" by the Wallabies last year and is determined to ensure the British and Irish Lions don't suffer the same fate. The Lions, made up of the best players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, have been installed as hot favourites to defeat Australia in the upcoming three-Test series. The Wallabies have slipped to eighth in the world rankings and didn't even make it out of the group stage at the 2023 World Cup. But Australia have become a much more emboldened unit under master coach Joe Schmidt, their win over England at Twickenham last year evidence of that. An 84th-minute try to Max Jorgensen lifted the Wallabies to a famous 42-37 win in what proved to be the finest moment under Schmidt's leadership. MAX. "They humbled us, and watching that game was pretty tough," Daly said. "It was one where we had control of it and lost it, so it probably hurt a little bit more. "They showed the quality of a couple of their players in space and hopefully we can shut that down. "The way they are playing the game is exciting and they have got some dangerous players." The Lions begin their Australian tour with a match against the Western Force at Optus Stadium on Saturday night. And Lions players are already on notice after suffering a shock 28-24 loss to Argentina in Dublin last week. In the direct aftermath of that loss, Daly had a strong message for his teammates in the group huddle. "(There was) disappointment in the group," Daly said. "I just felt I wanted to say, 'Lads, this is our first game together, it wasn't perfect and there is stuff we can work on, but we need to use this as a stepping stone for when we get out to Australia and get on the front foot'. "On this tour, with a game every four days, we need to bounce back quickly and take the positives and go to the next game." Daly is on his third Lions tour and will line up against a familiar face on Saturday - Western Force star Kurtley Beale. Beale played with Daly at English club Wasps in 2016-17 and they formed a strong friendship. "If he didn't get injured in that semi-final against Leicester in 2017 I think we would have won the title," Daly said. "He came at a time when we were playing attacking rugby and he slotted in really well. "He is such a good lad to have around the group and is one guy you can always go for a beer with or a coffee and end up having a laugh."

Todd Haley: Bill Parcells Had Dan Campbell Start Fight At Cowboys Practice
Detroit Lions' head coach Dan Campbell is the man in Motown, but apparently he was previously Bill Parcells' hitman on the Dallas Cowboys back in his days as a tight end. Former Cowboys wide receiver coach Todd Haley, who was with the organization from 2004 to 2006, revealed an amazing story about Parcells and Campbell, who played for the Cowboys from 2003-05. "Practice on a Wednesday was going bad. You could see Coach Parcells getting heated up. He was not happy with the way anything was going. There was no energy, and I see him call Dan over to the side and say a couple words to him. And Dan runs back into the huddle, and Parcells with his arms crossed like he always did, walked over to me, and he said, 'Watch this Todd.' A fight ensued on the next play, and Dan Campbell was in the middle of it," Haley said on the latest edition of ESPN's "This is Football" podcast. "As coaches, you got to do whatever you have to do to get things going in the right direction, and he knew that Dan was his man to get in there and stir it up, and it worked. All of a sudden, everybody is hooping and hollering, excited, and good things happened from there." Considering Campbell's "bite a kneecap off" line at his Lions introductory press conference and infectious passion on the sideline and in interviews, Haley's story is, without a doubt, believable. Campbell spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the New York Giants (1999-2002), who selected him in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M. After the three-year stint in Dallas, the tight end spent the final three seasons of his career with the Lions (2006-08). Campbell finished his career with 91 receptions, 934 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns. As a head coach, Campbell has taken the Lions from the NFL's basement to the party on the rooftop. After a 3-13-1 first season (2021), the Lions have posted 9-8, 12-5 and 15-2 campaigns under Campbell, highlighted by reaching the NFC Championship Game in 2023, winning back-to-back NFC North titles (2023-24) and earning the No. 1 seed in the NFC in 2024. As for Parcells, the Cowboys became his final NFL head-coaching stint, with the franchise going a combined 34-30 under him from 2003-06, which included making the playoffs in 2003 and 2006. Of course, the Hall of Fame head coach won two Super Bowls as head coach of the Giants (1986 and 1990 seasons), helped the New England Patriots reach Super Bowl XXXI and also helped the New York Jets reach the AFC Championship Game in the 1998 season. Meanwhile, Haley coached under Parcells on both the Jets and Cowboys and went on to have three NFL offensive coordinator gigs (Arizona Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns) and was the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2009-11.
