Novel set in wartime Wales to be released next month
The book, What We Left Behind, was written by Newport author Luisa A Jones and will be released on May 30.
It follows the story of five evacuee children and their teacher from the poorest parts of London's East End as they move to the fictional town of Pontybrenin in semi-rural south Wales.
The story is set against the backdrop of World War Two and details their struggles to settle into the new community.
Ms Jones said: "I've always been fascinated by Welsh history, and especially the less well-known stories of ordinary people living in extraordinary times.
"I was inspired to write this book after reading a snippet in the BBC People's War archive about a family who faced racism when they were first evacuated to Ebbw Vale, but were later welcomed into the community.
"Through social media, I was able to track down and interview a descendant of the family as part of my research.
"Her family's poignant story informed the story of the Clarke children in What We Left Behind."
The author, who attended Bassaleg School, studied classical studies at Royal Holloway, University of London, before training as a teacher at the University of South Wales, Newport.
She is a member of the Society of Authors, the Historical Writers' Association, and the Romantic Novelists' Association.
She was shortlisted for the RNA's Elizabeth Goudge Trophy in 2024.
Her first historical novel in The Fitznortons series, The Gilded Cage, quickly became a number one Amazon bestseller in Victorian Historical Romance.
When she isn't writing, Luisa enjoys travelling around Europe with her husband in Gwynnie, their 50-year-old Volkswagen camper van.

EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick has been suspended by the BBC after using a slur against people with disabilities on the set of Strictly Come Dancing. Borthwick is said to have made the offensive remark on a phone video while the Strictly cast were at Blackpool Tower Ballroom last November. A video emerged of the actor, who plays Jay Brown on the soap, using the term to describe the people of Blackpool, the town where the show was being filmed, and was first reported in The Sun on Sunday. A spokesperson for the BBC said: 'This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. 'We have robust processes in place for this.' Warren Kirwan, media manager at disability equality charity Scope, said: 'Attitudes and language like this are never acceptable. 'It's not just ignorant and hurtful to disabled people, it has wider consequences. 'Negative attitudes hold disabled people back in all areas of life, from getting a job to shopping on the high street. 'Mr Borthwick needs to reflect on what he said, educate himself and do better. 'We hope he takes the opportunity to get to know the reality of disabled people's lives.' Borthwick won the Strictly 2023 Christmas special with Nancy Xu, and won the best actor gong at the Inside Soap Awards in September that year. His suspension comes after Wynne Evans last week said he had been dropped by the BBC, following an apology which said he used 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour. The Welsh opera singer, 53, known for the "Go Compare" insurance advertisements, will no longer be a BBC Radio Wales presenter, he announced on May 30. Earlier this year, he apologised for language that he called 'inappropriate and unacceptable' after The Mail On Sunday reported that Evans was heard making a remark to a woman in a video filmed during the Strictly launch event. It is understood he was given a warning over the remark by tour producers. In January, he said: 'I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing. 'I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. 'Apologies to those I won't get to see at the remaining performances and I'm grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me.' The singer, who performed in the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Of The Opera and also won 2023's Celebrity MasterChef, told The Sun on Sunday earlier this month that the Strictly comment was not sexual or directed at one of the female cast but was a nickname for fellow contestant Borthwick. He told the paper: 'I didn't see the statement - 'Old Spit-roast Boy' was a nickname for Jamie Borthwick. I'm not a bad guy, I'm not a misogynist, I'm not any of these things. 'When I read the apology within the context of the story as it had been written, I was absolutely horrified.' The Strictly tour saw contestants of the most recent series return to the dancefloor and tour the country alongside Strictly judges Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse.

It follows growing concern about the number of British tourists being arrested for drug trafficking abroad. During the past few months, UK nationals have been detained in countries including Spain, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Germany, Indonesia, Chile, and the United States, often after being caught with narcotics in their luggage. One of the most high profile cases has been that of Bella Culley, who went missing Thailand. The 18-year-old from Teeside is currently held in a prison in Georgia on suspicion of drug offences. Prosecuters are investigating 12kg of marijuana and 2kg of hashish found in a travel bag at Tbilisi International Airport, the BBC reports. If found guilty, Miss Culley faces up to 20 years in jail or life imprisonment. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has revised its Safety and Security advice for 48 countries, highlighting the dangers of involvement with illegal substances. Article continues below In some countries, even traces of cannabis on clothing can lead to arrest, and blood and urine tests may also be conducted. The advice read: "There are severe penalties for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including cannabis. Airports have excellent technology to detect items, including in the baggage of transiting passengers." For those planning a trip abroad, it's essential to stay informed by checking the latest travel advice on the website, which provides detailed information for 226 countries. The updated guidance for most countries states: "Updated information on the risks of being involved with illegal drugs, including cannabis. This includes the risk of arrest if you are found carrying drugs when transiting through the airport." The advice underscores the harsh consequences of drug offences: "Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. "You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through airports." Here, being caught with, using, or smuggling banned substances - including cannabis - can come with extremely harsh penalties. Even those only passing through airports may find themselves facing prison terms of between four to 24 years, as well as hefty fines.

More info Six film location sites in northwest Wales are said to have been earmarked for season three of HBO's House of The Dragon (HoTD). Some were used in summer 2023, others are new. Three large sets are already taking shape at Dinorwig Quarry near Llanberis, which in season two served as an HoTD backdrop for Harrenhal Castle, the largest fortification in Westeros. Props assembled so far suggest the aftermath of a visit by a fire-breathing dragon to the Harrenhal battle camp in the Riverlands. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has hinted of more filming at Traeth Llanddwyn and Newborough Forest in southwest Anglesey, where some trees are being felled. According to a source close to the production team, film crews will also be returning to Penmon in south west Anglesey. Other locations are in Eryri (Snowdonia), including Cwm Idwal and its iconic lake in the Ogwen Valley, Gwynedd. Two sites near Capel Curig, Conwy, have also been scouted. A seventh site, in Nant Peris at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), will reportedly be used as the production team's base. Northwest Wales was one of the main stars of season two, when eight locations were used. Half of these were on Anglesey, including Beaumaris and Porth-y-Cŵch. Llanddwyn Beach, near Newborough village, saw a good deal of filming and is said to have provided the backdrop for parts of Dragonstone. In a social media post NRW said an un-named TV production company was back on site this week. They were undertaking 'small scale preparation works' at the Twyni Penrhos area of Newborough Forest. This involved removing a 'small number of unsafe trees', along with rough vegetation and tree stumps. The area will be restored to dune grassland and native scrub which will benefit wildlife and the local environment and provide accommodation space for filming equipment. "There will be no disruption to visitors.' At present it's unclear if HoTD will be returning to Trefor Quarry on the Gwynedd coast, which was transformed into Dragonstone Castle for season two. 'A large marquee is to be erected and the actors will be ferried to the various sites in minibuses and 4x4s,' they added. Production, location and safety crews are to be staying in Caernarfon and Bangor. Locals have reported seeing HoTD teams picking up visitor litter from Dinorwic Quarry and placing bins to ensure it's spotless when vacated. Season three is expected to be released in late 2026.
