Sachin Tendulkar Foundation To Develop 50 Playgrounds In Naxal-Hit Dantewada
With the Naxalite presence gradually decreasing, the administration has introduced the 'Maidan Cup' in collaboration with the Mann Deshi Foundation and Sachin Tendulkar Foundation. This project aims to develop 50 playgrounds in Dantewada to boost sports culture and talent.
'At least 20 playgrounds have been developed in the district so far with community participation, and we aim to meet our target by October," said Dantewada collector Kunal Dudawat.
Last year, the state government organised the Bastar Olympics 2024 to promote sports talents from the Bastar region, including Dantewada and six other districts.
The goal was to connect sports talents from Naxal-affected and sensitive districts with the world through games, he said.
'With this vision, we introduced the Maidan Cup to provide dedicated playgrounds for children and youth, further boosting sports talents in collaboration with the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation and Mann Deshi Foundation," he said.
Dudawat explained that in the first phase, 50 playgrounds will be developed in as many villages, and the initiative will be expanded to the entire district in the next phase.
Vibrant playgrounds are being developed in existing spaces within government high, higher secondary, and porta-cabin schools in the district, with community participation, he said.
The official noted that 20 playgrounds have been developed with facilities for 13 different sports, including a running track, shot put, javelin throw, discus throw, long jump, wall climbing, and more.
He mentioned that while the district administration could have built the playgrounds independently, the idea was to involve the community and iconic figures like Sachin Tendulkar to attract youth and children.
The playgrounds were developed using locally available materials, with each facility costing no more than Rs 4 lakh. Local children painted the boundary walls of the playgrounds, Dudawat said.
'With these facilities, we hope the next sports personalities of the country will come from the Bastar region. Youths of Bastar have shown exceptional athleticism and possess physical and genetic traits advantageous for certain sports. Many youngsters from the region join the police, paramilitary, and armed forces, and we want them to excel in national and international sports as well," he said.
'In the long run, we aspire for the next Sachin Tendulkar, Neeraj Chopra, and PT Usha to emerge from Bastar," he asserted.
The official mentioned that panchayats developing the best playgrounds under this initiative would be rewarded with a skating park.
He also highlighted the district administration's efforts to build a residential sports city, where elite athletes from the region will receive specialized training.
This sports city will feature cricket, football, and hockey grounds, swimming pools, and other sports facilities, he added.
'For the first time in India, there is a community movement to build playgrounds for children," said Divya Sinha, who leads the project from the Mann Deshi Foundation.
'We want Dantewada and Bastar to be recognised as hubs for climbing and skateboarding rather than being known for Naxalism," she said.
The Mann Deshi Foundation has been implementing the Maidan Cup initiative funded by the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation, she said.

'Imagine growing up in a place where children have never experienced the thrill of scoring a goal, the joy of swinging on a jungle gym, or the pride of competing in a kabaddi match. For years, this was the reality for thousands of kids in Dantewada, where conflict and poverty stole not just livelihoods but childhood itself. But today, something extraordinary is happening," she said.
Sinha mentioned that around 70 per cent of Indian schools lack proper sports facilities, and over 500 million Indians have never played a sport.
'In Dantewada, many children have never had a safe space to run, play, or just be kids. This isn't just about games. Research shows that playgrounds reduce dropout rates, improve mental health, and even deter youth from joining extremist groups," she said.
Playgrounds have already been completed in Chhindnar, Kasoli, and Heetameta villages, among others, directly impacting 10,000 children, she said.

'In Dantewada, we have trained sports teachers of 100 government schools as part of Mann Deshi Foundation's travel coach programme. In Maharashtra, we have trained 1,700 sports teachers from government schools. For the first time, the Maidan Cup initiative has been undertaken in Dantewada," Prabhat Sinha from Mann Deshi Foundation said.
More than 150 villagers, including teachers, farmers, labourers, workers, and children, gathered to create playgrounds in Dantewada, he said.
After Dantewada, the Maidan Cup initiative will be replicated in Jashpur (Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai's home district) and Raigarh districts, he added.

Sanju Samson played HUGE role in Vaibhav Suryavanshi century in IPL 2025, RR skipper had...
Vaibhav Suryavanshi created a new record with his maiden IPL century. He became the youngest-ever IPL centurion at only 14 years of age. Sanju Samson played a big role in Vaibhav Suryavanshi's century as the RR batter scored the ton with his skipper's bat. "He's known for collecting bats from the first day he came. I could feel he wanted a bat as he used to hang around my bat and kit bag for a long time, and I could feel like he needs not one, maybe a couple of bats. I wanted to give him one and gave him a good bat at the start of the season, so that he could prepare and get used to it. Very happy that he played with it and something great happened," Samson said on the X post from Rajasthan Royals. Vaibhav Suryvanshi scored the 2nd fastest IPL century ever off 35 balls against Gujarat Titans in Jaipur. Vaibhav Suryavanshi had replaced Sanju Samson when he was injured in IPL 2025. Suryavanshi was bought for Rs 1.1 crore in IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Sanju Samson was retained for Rs 18 crore by Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction. Sanju Samson's RR failed to qualify for IPL 2025 Playoffs, finishing in 9th place with only 8 points. Sanju Samson ended up with 285 runs in IPL 2025 in the 9 matches he played. Vaibhav Suryavanshi notched up 252 runs in 7 matches with a strike-rate of 206.

Karun Nair Was Told To Retire, Go And Chase Money By India Cricketer: "Would Have Been Easy..."
Karun Nair is one of the players to watch out for as India tour England for five Tests, starting from June 20. At the age of 33, Nair is making a remarkable comeback to the India squad, having not played a single match for the country in over eight years. Nair - who is only the second Indian to score a triple century in Test cricket - has now revealed that he had been earlier advised by a prominent Indian cricketer to pack his bags and leave India to secure financial stability for his future by playing in cash-rich T20 leagues abroad. The 33-year-old made his Test debut against England in Mohali in 2016 and went on to hit an unbeaten 303 in his third Test in Chennai, grabbing eyeballs. However, after that historic knock, he only played three home Tests against Australia in 2017 before being dropped from the team due to a series of low scores. "I still remember a prominent Indian cricketer calling me and saying you need to retire because the money in these leagues would make me secure. It would have been easy to do but I knew that regardless of the money, I would be kicking myself for giving up that easily," Nair said in an interview with Daily Mail. "I was never going to give up on playing for India again. That was just over two years ago and look where we are now,' he insists. It's crazy, but deep down, I knew I was good enough," he added. Despite the setbacks, Karun Nair never gave up on his dream of returning to the Indian team. Following the 2022 season, he endured a challenging period of nearly 14 months without playing any competitive cricket. However, he marked the beginning of his revival through a County stint with Northamptonshire. "It was next to nothing, but I didn't care because that was the opportunity I was desperate for. I went straight to Birmingham, had one net session and the day after, scored 78 at Edgbaston," he said. A week after joining Northamptonshire, he got 150 against Surrey at The Oval - the same ground where he thought he was going to get his chance in 2018. "I remember standing on the balcony and soaking it in and thinking about everything that had happened five years before and how it had to come back full circle. With the happiness involved, it's my most satisfying innings because I knew it was all about coming here and scoring runs. When you score runs in county cricket, people in India take note and listen. People like Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly all messaged me to say congratulations," Nair recalled. The right-handed batter switched his base from Karnataka to Vidarbha in 2023. He went on to score 690 runs in 10 games and followed it with 863 runs in nine Ranji Trophy games in 2024 with four centuries, including one in the finals, which paved the way for Vidarbha to lift the trophy. He also showed signs of power-hitting in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, amassing 779 runs in just eight innings, including five centuries, which prompted the Delhi Capitals to pick him in the IPL mega auction for Rs 50 lakh for the 2025 season. Nair admitted that towards the end of last year, he was manifesting the feeling of representing the national team again. "I manifested playing for India. There was a domestic game last year where they played the national anthem, and we were standing in a line, and I got that feeling of 'Oh, I need this to happen again' and picturing myself in Indian whites," said Nair.
