Jordan Thompson, Rinky Hijikata and Chris O'Connell lose at ATP Rosmalen tournament

Australian Jordan Thompson has failed to convert two match points to be bundled out of the grass-court ATP event in the Dutch town of Rosmalen.
Thompson, an accomplished grass court performer whose body has been beaten up over a tough season, had won his opening-round contest on Monday against American Aleksandar Kovacevic but lost out in the last-16 from a set up and despite having held two match points against Canada's Gabriel Diallo 4-6 6-1 7-5.
Thompson, a two-time finalist in the event, had his chance when holding match points on return at 5-4 in the final set, but Diallo kept his nerve to win 13 of the final 16 points and seal victory in two hours and eight minutes.
"I played some really good tennis, he's a very tricky opponent on the grass, it's a surface that suits him well," said Diallo.
"I knew I had to be really sharp. I came really close to losing on my serve but I managed to come up with some good points and carry that momentum."
It was a tough day for the Australians, with Rinky Hijikata and Chris O'Connell also bowing out on Wednesday.
Hijikata was also a set up against British stalwart Dan Evans before eventually succumbing 3-6 6-4 6-3, while world number 80 O'Connell found French veteran Adrian Manarino too much to cope with on the grass, as the world number 127 prevailed 6-1 6-3.
The triple defeat meant that Australian hopes now rest solely with fourth seed Alexei Popyrin, the last Aussie man standing at Roland Garros who had a first-round bye but will face Belgian Zizou Bergs in the last-16 on Thursday.
Alex de Minaur won this event in 2024, but elected not to defend his title as he takes a break before preparing for Wimbledon.

Equestrian Australia suspends Olympian Heath Ryan over horse whipping video

Australian Olympian Heath Ryan has been suspended by Equestrian Australia after a video emerged that appeared to show him repeatedly whipping a horse. Ryan, 66, represented Australia in dressage at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. The video — reportedly about two years old — shows a man striking a horse around 40 times. Ryan issued a statement saying he was acting in "the horse's best interest". Ryan said the horse, named Nico, came to him after an accident that resulted in a female rider needing hospital treatment. The Australian said Nico "had always been a problem child and would just not stop" and after the video he was able to rehome the horse. "I am so sad this was caught on video. If I had been thinking of myself I would have immediately just gotten off and sent Nico to the knackery," Ryan said. "That video was a life or death moment for Nico and I genuinely had to try my very hardest to see if Nico would consider other options. "All of this transpired sincerely with the horse's best interests the sole consideration. Unbelievably it was so successful for everyone except me with the release of this video." Britain's three-time Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin missed the Paris Games last year after a video emerged of her repeatedly striking a horse around its legs with a long whip. She was subsequently banned for a year by the FEI, equestrian sport's world governing body. After the Ryan video drew attention, Equestrian Australia said it had received a formal complaint about one of its members and had imposed a provisional suspension from all competitions and events. "Equestrian Australia is extremely alarmed and concerned by the treatment of the horse shown in this footage," a statement read. "Our policies include high standards to protect all participants and their horses against any adverse physical, social, and emotional conditions."

Tony Gollan's great hope Transatlantic gets run in Group 1 Stradbroke with Kimochi rule out

Two years of Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap heartache have eased for Tony Gollan, with his great hope Transatlantic getting a start as second emergency after a leading contender was ruled out by vets. Gary Portelli 's Group 1-winning Yulong-owned mare Kimochi was ruled out by vets on Friday morning with Queensland chief steward Josh Adams saying there was a tendon concern. It means Gollan galloper Transatlantic, who looked set to miss the Stradbroke field despite winning last Saturday's Listed Spear Chief Handicap at Eagle Farm, gets an unexpected start. Chris Waller mare Firestorm had been scratched from the Stradbroke earlier this week. Angela Jones is set to ride Transatlantic, meaning Toby Edmonds will have to find another rider for his lightweight Stradbroke filly Spicy Martini. Champion Queensland trainer Gollan had narrowly missed the Stradbroke field in the last two years with Antino (2023) and Freedom Rally (2024) and it looked like he was going to suffer the same fate with Transatlantic until Friday morning's vet news. Before Kimochi was scratched, Transatlantic had been a $17 chance in the Stradbroke betting market.
