Alpine skiing-Italy's Brignone still not sure she will be fit for Olympics
MILAN - Reigning World Cup overall champion Federica Brignone cast doubts over her participation in next year's Winter Olympics on home snow in Italy two months after she suffered serious injuries.
The 34-year-old, one of Italy's leading medal hopes at the Games, fractured her left leg and tore knee ligaments when she crashed into a gate during a race in the Italian championships.
"I would like to say that I will be present at the next Olympics, but as of today I don't know. I am working for that too, but my health comes first of all," Brignone told reporters in the medical centre in Turin on Tuesday.
"It is difficult to make any predictions, because there are many steps and we don't have any precise schedule," she said, adding that she remained confident and positive.
Brignone, who is walking with clutches, underwent surgery after the crash in April.
"As of today we can rule out a further operation, Federica had a major injury but the ACL is fine," said Andrea Panzeri, president of the medical staff of Italy's winter sports federation.
The 2026 Winter Olympics, co-hosted by Milan and the Alpine town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, run from February 6-22. REUTERS

The exercises, held on Wednesday in waters off the provinces of Occidental Mindoro and Zambales and away from contested features, included joint operations near shorelines as well as fire support. "The MCA (maritime cooperative activity) is a demonstration of both nations' resolve to deepen cooperation and enhance interoperability in line with international law," the Philippine armed forces said in a statement. The joint sail also showcased the Philippine vessel Miguel Malvar, a 118-metre guided missile frigate commissioned last month. It is one of two corvettes built by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries under the Philippines' military modernisation programme. Military engagements between the treaty allies have soared under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has pivoted closer to Washington in response to China's growing presence in the South China Sea. China claims sovereignty over nearly all the South China Sea, including parts of the exclusive economic zones of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Guatemala president reaffirms support for ‘brothers' in Taiwan

PHOTO: REUTERS TAIPEI - Guatemala, one of Taiwan's few remaining diplomatic allies, reaffirmed its support for the island on June 5 during a visit by President Bernardo Arevalo, who said his people will walk together with their "brothers" in Taiwan. Guatemala is one of only 12 countries to retain formal ties with Chinese-claimed Taiwan and Beijing has been stepping up its campaign to win those nations over to its side. Taiwan says it has every right to forge state-to-state relations and Beijing has no right to interfere. Mr Arevalo, on his first trip to Taiwan since taking office in 2024, said at a welcome ceremony with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te that the two sides were firm friends and "brotherly peoples". "We thank our ally for the support we have always received over these more than 90 years. We reaffirm the support of the Republic of Guatemala for the Republic of China, Taiwan," he said at the presidential office, referring to the island's formal name. "On behalf of the people of Guatemala, I extend our hand to the people of Taiwan with the confidence that we will walk together along the path toward shared well-being, which we will make more profound and more comprehensive today." Mr Arevalo is being accompanied by his foreign and economics ministers. Mr Lai, standing next to Mr Arevalo, said Taiwan and Guatemala will keep deepening their cooperation "Although our two countries are geographically distant but the ideals and values of the two peoples are closely intertwined," he said. The United States has been concerned about China's efforts to snatch away Taiwan's allies, especially in Latin America. In February, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Guatemala's relations with Taiwan while on a visit to the country, saying the United States would help support it. In 2023, Taiwan's then-president, Ms Tsai Ing-wen, went to Guatemala a week after neighbouring Honduras severed diplomatic relations with Taipei in favour of Beijing.
