In a landmark scientific advancement, researchers from the
Zoological Survey of India
(ZSI) have catapulted Indian
biodiversity research
onto the global stage by becoming the first in the world to decode complex spider–parasitoid associations directly from spider egg sacs using
DNA metabarcoding
.
Led by K. Rajmohana and including Rupam Debnath, V. Sushama, and K. P. Dinesh, the ZSI team's findings were published in the prestigious journal Scientific Reports. The study harnesses cutting-edge
high-throughput sequencing
technology to explore the microscopic world of parasitoids—tiny insects often less than a millimetre in size—embedded deep within spider biology.
'Sustainability begins with understanding the intricate web of life,' said Dhriti Banerjee, Director of ZSI, congratulating the team.
'This ground-breaking research is a proud moment for Indian science and demonstrates our leadership in biodiversity innovation.'
Traditionally, studying parasitoids—organisms that lay their eggs in or on a host—has been a challenging task, limited by the need for laborious rearing and microscopic analysis. However, by using DNA metabarcoding, the ZSI team successfully identified elusive parasitoid genera like Idris, Odontacolus, Baeus, and even unexpected taxa such as Aphanogmus from within spider egg sacs.

The research analysed over two million DNA reads, resulting in the identification of 28 arthropod taxa, 14 of which showed direct parasitoid-host associations.
The technique also revealed broader trophic interactions, including prey transported by mother spiders, offering a more comprehensive view of food webs.
'It's like lifting a veil on an unseen world,' said Rupam Debnath, one of the researchers. 'We found not only expected associations but also new, previously undetectable connections.'
V. Sushama added, 'This study shows nature's complexity in a new light. The discovery of organisms like Aphanogmus in spider egg sacs suggests intricate ecological networks, often shaped by simultaneous, overlapping food chains.'
Looking forward, K. P. Dinesh emphasized the importance of building robust DNA barcode libraries for both
parasitoid wasps
and spiders to support deeper ecological monitoring and conservation strategies.
This achievement is not just a win for Indian science but a significant contribution to the global scientific community. It opens new avenues for applying molecular tools in biodiversity conservation and ecological research, making nature's invisible connections visible like never before.

Railway officials highlighted the Chenab Bridge's structural strength, mentioning that it can withstand wind speeds over 250 km/h and was built using about 30,000 metric tons of steel. One foundation, known as S20, is so massive it covers nearly one-third of a football field, specifying the scale and vision behind the structure. The entire USBRL project represents not just engineering excellence but also New India's resolve and determination. With electric engines powered by specially designed overhead equipment (OHE) and advanced tunnel safety systems, the railway line is built for resilience and long-term service. The groundbreaking space mission that will make Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, only the second Indian to go to space, has been postponed to June 10, Axiom Space Inc announced on Tuesday—the second delay for the historic 14-day flight. Axiom Space Inc announced that the Ax-4 mission, originally scheduled for May 29 and later moved to June 8, will now lift off at 8:22am EST aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida for the International Space Station. The 39-year-old test pilot will join three international crew members on the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, marking India's return to human spaceflight after a 40-year hiatus since Rakesh Sharma's pioneering mission in 1984. 'Since we both belong to the Indian Air Force and were also test pilots, he understands the journey and background I come from,' Shukla said, speaking of Sharma as his mentor during a virtual press conference with the crew. 'He navigated the same path in 1984 and guided me with sound advice which I am carrying along.' Shukla, who grew up reading about Sharma in textbooks, initially channeled his space fascination into flying fighter jets before India had a human spaceflight programme. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Gaganyaan mission in 2018—India's first indigenous crewed orbital flight—Shukla immediately applied for Indian Space Research Organisation's (Isro) Human Spaceflight Programme and remains among the top contenders, he said. The mission carries deep personal significance for Shukla, who will take a surprise gift to space for Sharma without revealing details. Gurgaon: Haryana will restore 24,990 hectares of degraded Aravali land in the first phase of the ambitious Green Wall project, which aims to develop a continuous line of forests from Porbandar in Gujarat to Rajghat in Delhi, spanning the length of the ancient hill ranges. The state's restoration plan will be carried out in recorded forest areas (RFA) of five districts – Gurgaon, Faridabad, Nuh, Rewari and Mahendergarh – over three years. Charkhi Dadri, the sixth Haryana district where the Aravalis lie, is not part of this phase because most of the forest is intact there. Haryana's principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) Vineet Kumar Garg told TOI on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially launch the green wall project on June 5, which is observed as the world environment day. "We will start work in Haryana the same day," Garg said. Forest department officials said they used GIS (geographical information system) mapping to identify RFA – totaling 33,706 hectares – across the five districts. Of this, 24,990 hectares were found to be degraded. Over half of the degraded land has low tree cover, around a quarter that has no forest cover at all, and 15% of it is scrubland, they said. The Aravali Green Wall project, announced by the central govt in 2023, borrows its conception from Africa's Great Green Wall initiative, under which an 8,000km "wall" of forests was restored across the continent. On the ground, work will involve plantation drives, development of check dams and percolation ponds, and restoration of grasslands, among other measures. On Tuesday, activists said the state must also ensure that the Aravalis are legally protected as forests. "What we need is strong legal cover to shield the Aravalis from the twin threats of illegal mining and rampant tree felling. Without it, this ancient range will continue to be chipped away — stone by stone, tree by tree," said Vivek Kamboj, an environmentalist.
