Germany picks experienced squad for Euro 2025 but leaves out two critics
RUST, Germany (AP) — Germany has retained 11 players who reached the 2022 Women's European Championship final for Euro 2025. There's no place for two prominent critics of coach Christian Wück.
The 23-player squad announced on Thursday is captained by Bayern Munich's Giulia Gwinn, one of the returning players from the team which lost to England in the 2022 final.
North Carolina Courage defender Felicitas Rauch and Eintracht Frankfurt forward Nicole Anyomi were in the 2022 squad but aren't this time.
Both have previously criticized Wück for what they called a lack of communication around his decision not to pick them for earlier squads. Rauch was among 12 players included in a reserve list on Thursday.
The 20-year-old forward Cora Zicai is considered one of Germany's brightest young players after scoring two goals in her three national team games.
Germany starts its Euro 2025 campaign in Switzerland on July 4 with a group game against Poland followed by Denmark on July 8 and Sweden on July 12.
Since the last Euros, Germany suffered its worst ever World Cup result in 2023 with elimination in the group stage, but rebounded to win the bronze medal at last year's Paris Olympics.

Olympic Equestrian Heath Ryan Claims He Was Trying To Save Horse That He Whipped Continuously In Video
Olympic equestrian Heath Ryan was suspended Thursday after officials said they were 'deeply concerned' by video of him whipping a horse dozens of times. The resurfaced clip from a few years back caught the attention of Equestrian Australia's Integrity Unit, which said it is launching an investigation into the actions of Ryan, a dressage competitor at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He finished 34th in the individual event. The disturbing footage shows Ryan continuously striking the horse as the smacking blows resonate. Nico was hit at least 40 times, according to outlets. At one point the horse begins to kick up a leg with every impact. Ryan claimed he was trying to save the uncooperative horse from the 'Knackery,' where destroyed animals are processed. On Facebook he said a friend had dropped off the horse after a serious accident riding the animal. 'I am so sad this was caught on video,' Ryan wrote on June 11. 'If I had been thinking of myself I would have immediately just gotten off and sent Nico to the Knackery. That video was a life or death moment for Nico and of that I was very aware. I felt I genuinely had to try my very hardest to see if Nico would consider other options.' Ryan said the 'problem child' animal did eventually respond without 'excessive driving aids' and he was able to find Nico a new home where he is 'thriving' with 'an exciting future.' 'If you think I did that flippantly you are wrong,' Ryan continued. 'I hated reaching out in those moments to Nico and asking the hard questions. That was the last place I wanted to be. I have never before ridden a horse that reacted like that and I certainly will never do it again. Was it worth it?? Well not for me however I am very happy for Nico. I need to add that this happened about 2 years ago and the video has been posted by an unhappy ex employee. All I can say is that this awful video was collateral damage of me from the bottom of my heart launching a rescue mission.' Brighton signs teenage forward Kostoulas from Champions League-bound Olympiakos
LONDON (AP) — Brighton has signed teenage forward Charalampos Kostoulas, who gave up a Champions League season with Olympiakos to play in the Premier League. The 18-year-old Kostoulas signed a five-year contract, Brighton said, with the transfer fee reportedly set at an initial 35 million euros ($40.4 million). 'It is a dream for everybody to come here and play football,' the Greece Under-21 striker said in an interview published Friday by Brighton. He scored seven goals in 22 games in the Greek league as Olympiakos won a record-extending 48th title and completed a trophy double in the domestic cup. Olympiakos was elevated directly into the lucrative Champions League opening phase — because title-holder Paris Saint-Germain already secured a place by winning the French league — and will play eight games in the single-standings league.
