England's Maro Itoje will captain the British and Irish Lions rugby union team on their upcoming tour of Australia, it was announced on Thursday.
The 30-year-old lock only took over as England skipper ahead of this season's Six Nations and guided the side to a creditable second-placed finish behind champions France.
Now he has been chosen as skipper for a Lions tour including three Tests against the Wallabies by head coach Andy Farrell, seconded from his day job as Ireland boss.
Itoje's path to the Lions captaincy was mooted when his main rival for the post, Caelan Doris, suffered a shoulder injury playing in Leinster's Champions Cup semi-final loss to Northampton last weekend.
The Ireland No 8 was ruled out of the squad as he requires surgery.
"It's hard to articulate," said Itoje after taking the stage at London's O2 Arena, where some 2,000 spectators were present as fans were on hand to watch a Lions squad announcement for the first time.
"It's a tremendous honour, it's a tremendous privilege. You think about the people who have held this position before and it's remarkable. It's an honour and I will do my very best to make sure I can contribute to a successful tour."
Farrell said: "I want to congratulate Maro on being named captain of the British and Irish Lions.
"As a two-time tourist (with the Lions in 2017 and 2021), Maro fully understands what the Lions are all about and also the role of the captain in helping the group achieve its goal of winning a Test series this summer."
Itoje is the first English player to lead the Lions – made up of leading players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales – since Martin Johnson in 2001.
But there was no place in a 38-man squad for former England captain Owen Farrell, the son of Andy Farrell.
Owen Farrell is barred from representing England after deciding to play his club rugby outside of the country at Paris-based Racing 92, and has suffered an injury-hit debut season in France. (AFP)

O'Brien wins record-extending 11th Derby with Lambourn

O'Brien wins record-extending 11th Derby with Lambourn Jockey Wayne Lordan rides Lambourn to victory at the Epsom Derby. Photo: AFP Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien won a record-extending 11th Epsom Derby as Lambourn put up an astonishing performance to lead from start to finish on Saturday. For O'Brien it completed an extraordinary two days as Minnie Hauk won the Oaks on Friday and his Jan Brueghel won the other Group One race the Coronation Cup. It is not the first time the 55-year-old has achieved the Oaks/Derby double, last doing it in 2020 with Love (Oaks) and Serpentine. Jockey Wayne Lordan was never challenged in winning his first Derby on his ninth ride in the race considered to be the 'blue riband' of flat racing. None of the other fancied horses landed a blow and it was two outsiders that were closest at the finish – Lazy Griff (50/1) was second with 28/1 chance Tennessee Stud, trained by O'Brien's son Joseph, third. "I knew I'd gone a good gallop, his ears were pricked and I knew he had plenty left," said Lordan. "He's a horse that we've always felt stays well so I just thought anybody that gets to me will have to stay well and it'd be tough for them." Lordan's career was in doubt a couple of years ago after a dreadful fall in the Irish Derby in which he suffered a fractured leg and elbow. Saturday, though, represented his biggest ever victory. "It's one of the greatest races," said the 43-year-old. "For any jockey that wants to start out, all they ever want to do is win the Derby and I work for Aidan, Ballydoyle, Coolmore so I'm in a lucky position that I get to ask for a horse like this." Gauff fights back to beat Sabalenka at French Open

Gauff fights back to beat Sabalenka at French Open Gauff celebrates her French Open title by kissing the clay at Roland Garros. Photo: AFP Coco Gauff battled back from a set down to beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a Grand Slam final for the second time, with a dramatic victory in the French Open showpiece on Saturday. The second-ranked American dug deep to claim a 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-4 victory and her second major title after also defeating Sabalenka at the 2023 US Open. The 21-year-old more than made amends for her emotional 2022 final loss to Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros, outlasting Sabalenka over two hours and 38 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. It was a second straight Grand Slam final loss for Sabalenka after her defeat by Madison Keys at the Australian Open in January. Gauff was rock solid after falling a set down, while Sabalenka made 70 unforced errors in windy conditions in a match which followed a very similar pattern to Gauff's victory at Flushing Meadows two years ago. Belarusian Sabalenka was aiming to become the only current women's player to win three of the four Grand Slam events after her US Open triumph last year and back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2023 and 2024. But Gauff instead moved 6-5 ahead in their head-to-head record, proving the more consistent player in the first women's Slam final between the world's top two since Caroline Wozniacki beat Simona Halep in Melbourne in 2018. Marc Marquez wins sprint to extend lead in title race

Marc Marquez wins sprint to extend lead in title race Team Ducati Lenovo's Marc Marquez celebrates winning another sprint race. Photo: AFP Spanish motorcycling great Marc Marquez maintained his dominance of the sprint races this season, winning the Aragon leg on Saturday for his seventh victory out of the eight raced so far this season. The 32-year-old Ducati rider extended his lead in the overall standings over his younger brother Alex (Ducati-Gresini), who finished second. Marc Marquez, who has won the Aragon MotoGP six times in 10 appearances, was trailing his brother at the first corner but passed him at the halfway stage and eased home. Rookie Fermin Aldeguer of Ducati-Gresini finished third to make it an all-Spanish podium. Both Marquez brothers will start on the front row of the grid in Sunday's MotoGP – the eighth of 22 Grand Prix – Marc having taken pole earlier on Saturday. Italy's Franco Morbidelli (Ducati-VR46), who finished fourth in the sprint, fills out the front row places. Marquez is seeking to end a three-race losing run, having got off to a blistering start with three wins in the first four MotoGPs. (AFP)
