Onya Nurve talks winning 'RuPaul's Drag Race' season 17

Yahoo19-04-2025

After a season packed with fierce runway looks, bold performances and emotional moments, Onya Nurve was officially named America's Next Drag Superstar in the season 17 finale of "RuPaul's Drag Race."
Onya clinched the win after a standout season that saw her rack up four challenge victories, ultimately beating out fellow finalists Lexi Love, Sam Star and runner-up Jewels Sparkles.
RuPaul dishes on his mantra for following your wildest dreams
Appearing on "Good Morning America" on Saturday to celebrate her win, Onya reflected on the surreal moment she heard her name called by the legendary RuPaul.
"You hear RuPaul call girls' names for 16 seasons now, so to hear her say my name, and as a winner, it was amazing," she said.
But the most meaningful moment of the season for Onya may have come off the runway. She opened up about sharing the experience with her father, who not only made a surprise appearance on the show but stepped into drag himself.
"It has meant the world," she said. "My dad has always been a huge support, but he hasn't always been in my life for some big moments like graduation, for instance. So for him to come on Drag Race and not only come on Drag Race, but get into drag with me was amazing. He has always supported my drag, but I didn't think it was to the point where he would come on the show and dress up as a woman."
In addition to celebrating her personal journey, Onya used her moment in the spotlight to share advice with parents of queer children.
"I would say talk less and listen more," she explained. "I feel like parents sometimes feel like they have to tell their child something, but when you have a queer child, it is a good opportunity to just listen and hear what they have to say. Call them by their appropriate pronouns and learn from them."

RuPaul's Drag Race Judge Michelle Visage To Host New Reality Show

It's upfront season, which means all the media companies are unleashing new shows, and quietly cancelling some of our favorites. So far, we've learned of a new Housewives franchise, a full slate of new Peacock reality shows, and Kim Kardashian's return to acting. With all of that news, you might have missed that RuPaul's Drag Race star Michelle Visage landed a new series on the E! Network. Earlier this year, NBCUniversal and Comcast announced a change in their cable portfolio with a new entity called Versant. This group owns E!, USA Network, SyFy, and Oxygen. With that change came a few reworkings of their reality lineups, such as House of Villains making the move to Peacock. Other shows have been quietly cast into the abyss, like The Anonymous. Despite all of the shuffling behind the scenes, the network is still committed to a lineup of reality TV. According to E! News, one of them is Michelle's newly announced show, Plastic Surgery Rewind. The Drag Race star is teaming up with Dr. Terry Dubrow from The Real Housewives of Orange County and a 'body image expert' named Dr. Spirit, PhD. On Plastic Surgery Rewind, the trio will work with celebrities and influencers through a 'transformative journey of self-discovery,' where they'll reflect on their previous plastic surgeries and decide if they should return to a more natural look. Of course, this is right up Michelle's alley. A few years ago, she released a documentary called Explant, showcasing her journey to remove her breast implants. Her large breasts were the butt of a million jokes on Drag Race, but Michelle opted to remove her implants bcause she believed they were making her sick. Oddly enough, the announcement of Plastic Surgery Rewind comes ten years after RuPaul had her own plastic surgery show on E! called Good Work. On that show, she also teamed up with Dr. Dubrow, but the premise was a little different. That show focused on them dishing about Hollywood's biggest plastic surgeries, whereas this one is about self-reflection and confidence. In addition to Plastic Surgery Rewind, other new shows coming to E! include a reboot of Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane with Kimora Lee Simmons. Plus, the network plans to air a docuseries called E! Dirty Rotten Scandals. It will uncover the 'dirty truths' behind some of TV's biggest shows, like America's Next Top Model. The bottom line is, E!'s unique brand of reality TV isn't going anywhere. Plastic Surgery Rewind premieres this summer on E! TELL US – DO YOU PLAN ON WATCHING MICHELLE VISAGE'S NEW SHOW WITH DR. TERRY DUBROW? WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE NEW SHOWS COMING TO THE E! Sasha Velour's ‘Big Reveal' redraws the boundaries of drag and theater

Other performers might dread glitches during shows. Sasha Velour makes them her co-stars. Her 'The Big Reveal Live Show!' offers no straightforward lip sync. Phone rings, TV static and vertical colored bars, smashed dishes, recording skips, computer viruses and flickering lights constantly interrupt her drag numbers, video art, autobiographical anecdotes and mini lectures on drag history and theory. But if these on-purpose mistakes rip the fabric of the mostly solo show, which opened Wednesday, June 4, at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the 'RuPaul's Drag Race' champion, author and Berkeley native widens them into wormholes and crawls inside to do battle with them. As she tries to claw back control of her bit, she might wind up on the floor in tears, but she's the winner all the same. It's partly a clown show: the garish makeup, the padded body parts, the nightmarish facial expressions, the wordless physical theater fight against absurdist forces too large to understand. But in all those gaffes, larger ideas are also at work. Imperfection is key to understanding drag and camp more generally, Velour says at one point. The art form doesn't work if you don't have self-awareness — if you don't understand your flaws but 'press on' anyway. (The implied corollary: Someone like Trump couldn't do camp even if he wanted to.) In a tough time for theater locally and nationwide, with companies scaling back or closing as funding sources dwindle, 'The Big Reveal Live Show!' suggests that institutional theater programming more drag might be one way forward. Audience members certainly showed up on Wednesday, some even glammed up in drag as opposed to the standard Berkeley Rep audience uniform of earth tones and sensible shoes. And Velour's show itself is more daring, artistic and intellectual than a lot of straight plays. Some of her patter — 'After so many years of backlash,' 'Drag serves as a mirror,' 'We are here, and we are not going away' — is boilerplate; the points might be more effectively made without didacticism. But other bits of monologue evince the scholarly yet frisky understanding of drag that undergirds her book, also called 'The Big Reveal,' with the subtitle 'An Illustrated Manifesto of Drag.' 'Queerness isn't shocking or groundbreaking at all,' she says in the show. 'It's normal. It's boring.' Cultures throughout history have had some kind of drag performance, she points out — even the American military in World War II. It only becomes threatening, she says, when it's no longer performed by straight men. Her costumes — by Diego Montoya Studio, Pierretta Viktori, Jazzmint Dash, Gloria Swansong and Casey Caldwell — are celestial wonders. One skirt hem resembles the orbit of the sometime-planet Pluto, both elliptical and noncoplanar, forming part of an outfit that looks like a bottle of pink Champagne frozen right in the moment of exploding. Another piece blurs the boundary between human and furniture. In one heart-stopping moment, she lines herself up with an outline of a human form projected on a large screen behind her. Without any perceptible change in lighting, she seems to change color, blazing in the gold of a desert sunset. Graffiti gets written on her, and ropes wrap around her; body parts metamorphose and enlarge. Your eyes search for signs as to what's projected and what's tangible. She dissolves in flames. By the end, you half expect her to be able to step through the screen and get swallowed whole, the wormholes covering their tracks like magic. As Velour finds the deviant in the familiar — talk shows, Disney princesses having animal friends, audio montages of iconic phone calls in film, the pixelated desktop of 1990s-era Windows — she makes the case that drag is available to everyone, no matter how weird or normie you are. That thing that tickles you? That you find yourself returning to again and again? Drag is a way you can talk about it, and it belongs on every stage and in every sitting room in America.
