Lee Sansum dead at 63: Former bodyguard to Princess Diana who protected William & Harry passes away as wife pays tribute
PRINCESS Diana's former bodyguard who protected princes William and Harry has died at the age of 63.
Lee Sansum, who served as a royal military police officer, was one of Diana's bodyguards shortly before her death in 1997, escorting her during a family holiday to the French resort of Saint Tropez that year.

The former bodyguard's wife announced the tragic news of Lee's death in a post on Facebook on Monday, revealing he had died of a sudden heart attack.
Sharing a compilation of pictures of the couple throughout the years, she wrote: "Since meeting in 1998, Lee Sansum has been my soul mate, hero and most amazing man in my world.
"So I'm devastated to share that he is no longer with us. He had a fatal heart attack on Saturday morning at home.
"His huge presence will be missed around the world as much as it is in our household although his capacity for love, and the life skills he has shared have left a legacy that will never be lost.
"He's forever loved and will always be with us
"I love you more than ever 'My Lovely Lee'."
On top of being a bodyguard for Diana and her kids, father-of-six Lee also served as a bodyguard for the late Alex Salmond, while he was serving as First Minister of Scotland in 2014.
Lee, who held black belts in karate, jujitsu and kick-boxing, was nicknamed "Rambo" by Diana and was no stranger to the spotlight.
He also loyally protected stars such as Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Nicole Kidman, and Tom Cruise during his career.
At the time of Diana's tragic death in 1997, Lee was serving as part of the protection team for Mohamed Al-Fayed - the father of her then partner Dodi.
He had been assigned to look after Diana and her young sons Prince William and Prince Harry during their stay at Al-Fayad's 30-bedroom villa in Saint Tropez in the summer of 1997.
This was tragically just one month before Diana died in a Paris car crash, alongside Dodi.
Lee had released a book in 2022 - called The Bodyguard - in which he explored his close relationship with Diana and the young princes, particularly Harry.
He revealed how he had tried to teach the two boys kickboxing but that they were too "apprehensive" to it.

However, he managed to succeed in teaching Harry how to drive a jet ski - even helping him to soak photographers who were waiting to snap a picture of the young prince on holiday.
For his loyal and kind services on the trip, he was given a touching thank you letter by Diana.
In it, she wrote that she was grateful for the "magical ten days [which] would not have been possible without your invaluable contribution".
The former bodyguard also revealed that Diana had turned to him for comfort, even crying on his shoulder, after her fashion designer friend Gianni Versace had been fatally shot outside his home in July 1997.
Lee, born in Burnley, Lancashire, said Diana would chat to him every day after she woke up at 7am - adding that she was worried about the safety of her own life.
He added that Diana was an "amazing woman", saying: "She cared a great deal. She never said a bad word about anyone.'
25 years following her death, Lee also revealed how he could have been in the car with the princess on the day she died.
Speaking in a 2022 interview, he said: "It could have been me in that car.
"We drew straws to see who would be accompanying Trevor [Rees-Jones] that weekend.
"When I learned they were not wearing seatbelts in the crash I understood why they didn't survive.
"I always insisted on it."
Lee claimed Diana would still be alive if he had been on duty the night she died in a car crash.
The ex-Royal Military Policeman and "international security consultant" explained it was standard practice for the family to wear seatbelts - an order which had been sent down by Mohamed Al-Fayed.
When Diana, Dodi, and driver Henri Paul crashed and tragically died, none were wearing seatbelts.
Lee had begun his service as a military police officer in Northern Ireland during The Troubles.
He said: 'I was looking after people in witness protection. I learnt my craft in Northern Ireland.'
After leaving the Army he started working as a civilian bodyguard, known in the industry as The Circuit.
A friend then recommended him to billionaire businessman Al-Fayed, who was so impressed by Lee that the bodyguard said he 'became like family'.

Love Islander's secret connection to former star revealed
LOVE Island newbie Dejon Noel Williams is getting ready to start his villa adventure – and thankfully he has a famous pal who may have been able to provide him some tips. The 26-year-old personal trainer from London was one of the first stars to be announced today for this year's Love Island, heading off to Mallorca in the hopes of finding some romance. 6 6 6 But before the show kicks off next Monday, The Sun can reveal that he already has a connection to a successful past contestant. Dejon's father, Gifton Noel-Williams, at one point was a professional footballer signed to Watford from 1996 to 2003. During this time, Gifton was teammates with Micah Hyde, the father of Love Island 2023 finalist, Tyrique. Tyrique found love in the villa with Ella Thomas, eventually placing third and staying with Ella for a year before their split. Gifton and Micah played alongside each other throughout their respective time at Watford, being shown as solid pals on the pitch. Tyrique and Dejon are also the same age and have played football like their dads. As childhood friends, Dejon now trains Tyrique, with the pair sharing gym videos together on Instagram. Dejon is open about his famous dad, saying ahead of entering the villa: "I've met all kinds of famous people through him. "When I was younger it was weird because he was just my dad, but we'd go to a game and fans were asking for photos. " He says he's looking for a girl in the villa who "is beautiful on the inside and out, looks after themselves and is healthy". Ten Years of Love Island Maya Jama will be back to welcome the new gang into the villa for the ultimate summer of love. The Sun revealed exclusive photos of the new-look Majorcan villa, which promises to deliver some of the show's biggest twists yet. Dejon is not the only islander with a famous connection, with fellow star Tommy Bradley revealing he has a famous boxing brother, Jamie, who trained with Anthony Joshua. Love Island starts Monday at 9pm on ITV, ITV2 and ITVX. 6 6 6

Who is Kyle Ashman? Love Island star sensationally axed over machete arrest
LOVE Island star Kyle Ashman was sensationally axed from the show last night over a machete attack. ITV chiefs scrapped the 23-year-old from the line up, plunging the show into chaos ahead of Monday's launch. 3 3 Eyebrows were raised after the cast member was removed from the show at the final hour. Unlike most of Love Island's line-ups, Kyle wasn't going into the villa with a social media packed with model shots. He has just one snap online, showing off his rippling six-pack as he poses on a rooftop. The mysterious 23-year-old water operative, from Stafford, previously described his flirting style as traditional and laid-back. He said: "I just go with it, find something to compliment a girl on and go from there." The chopped contestant said he was looking for "someone that's fun, confident and just themselves". Not much else is known about Kyle's private life. His flight back home from Majorca came after masked thugs stormed a wake in Stafford and hacked at a dad with a blade in February. Ashman, 23, was one of two quizzed but released with no further action. Sources said the channel was unaware of the incident and he was not flagged as part of contestant checks. The victim, 38, nearly lost his arm. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and kept in for around two weeks. Another mourner was glassed, one struck with a metal pole, and two people run over by a car during 15 minutes of terror at a social club in Stafford. Ashman, who lives in the town, was one of two men to be nicked on suspicion of affray and bailed. Police confirmed yesterday that after the matter had been investigated the pair were released with no further action only last month. A source said: 'This was a horrific attack which could have been even worse. 'Ashman may have signed up to one of the biggest shows on TV with this hanging over his head.' It is not suggested that Ashman, whose job involves laying and repairing water pipes, was involved in the attack. Last night he insisted he was not a violent person. Confirming his show exit, an ITV spokesman said: 'For personal reasons, Kyle will not be entering the Love Island Villa as planned.' The mass brawl broke out at The White Eagle Club on February 28. Sources said three balaclava-clad thugs armed with machetes and metal poles stormed the venue and attacked the dad over an alleged £3,000 debt. They attacked him with a blade and left him with a deep gash on his arm — with witnesses wrapping towels over it to stem the bleed. Pals say he has suffered tendon damage and is unable to drive due to his injuries. Witnesses said the mob made off in a white Vauxhall Astra waiting outside. Around 70 mourners, some elderly and some children, had gathered to pay their respects to local Stanley Reid. Our source continued: 'This seemed to be a targeted attack — they knew who they were looking for and where he was. "People wrapped a towel around the man's injury while waiting for emergency services. "Children were taken into a room and locked in there to keep them away from the violence. 'People were screaming and crying in fear. They had gathered to pay final farewells to a man who was really well-respected within the local community. 'They could have killed someone that night. They are nothing but scumbags. They ruined what was a lovely send-off for a good person.' Staffordshire Police said yesterday: 'We were called to a social club on Riverway, Stafford, at 7.40pm on Friday, February 28 following reports that someone had been glassed outside and a fight was taking place. Some of the men involved were wearing masks and were carrying weapons. 'Two men went to hospital after suffering injuries at the scene. Both have since been discharged. 'A man and a woman suffered minor injuries at the scene but did not want any medical treatment. 'Officers have reviewed CCTV footage and have been actively carrying out enquiries to find out more about what happened. 'A 22-year-old man, from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of wounding and affray. "Another man, also 22 and from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of affray. 'Both were questioned in custody and bailed with conditions while our enquiries continue.' A force spokeswoman later confirmed that both suspects had been released with no further action last month. Ashman said last night: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' A show source said: 'ITV were entirely unaware of Kyle's past and, as he was not charged, it was not flagged as part of Love Island's stringent DBS checks. 'It's only right he can now return home to the UK to share his side of the story and therefore bosses took the decision that it was best for him not to enter the villa.' Love Island host Maya Jama will kick off the brand new series on Monday, June 9. 3

Oasis star Noel Gallagher's Bentley goes on sale for £1.2 million
Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher's red 1997 Bentley Turbo R has gone on sale priced at £1.2 million. The four-door saloon car listed on Auto Trader was previously owned by the 58-year-old, despite the fact he cannot drive, once telling Zoe Ball on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show that he gave up learning after being mobbed by children when he was told to park close to a school for a lesson. Speaking about the sale, Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader, said: 'Cars listed by music legends don't come around very often, and Noel Gallagher's Bentley Turbo R is certainly one for the Auto Trader history books. 'With over 80 million visits to Auto Trader every month, we expect this rock 'n' roll ride to strike a chord with music lovers and car collectors alike.' The car also has the number plate 'OASI6 2', in reference to his Britpop band, who will reunite to play a run of gigs this year in the UK and Ireland, featuring stops at Manchester's Heaton Park, London's Wembley Stadium, and Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, throughout July, August and September. Despite not being able to drive, Gallagher was ordered to pay a court £1,000 and was handed six penalty points in April 2023, for failing to tell police who was driving his Range Rover, when it was clocked speeding at 41mph on a 30mph stretch of the A40 in Edgware Road, West London. Speaking about his driving lesson in the 1990s, Gallagher told Ball in 2023: 'I have had one driving lesson in the 90s and I was driving round a housing estate in Slough and she (the instructor) said to me, 'if you just indicate and pull over here' then I pulled over. 'She got out the car she said, 'I'll be back in a minute', she came out with her mum, she drove me to her house. 'Then the local comprehensive bell went and they all came out. 'This is at the height of Oasis-mania and I was like, 'never, never again'.' Gallagher began his career in the 1990s with Oasis, who he formed alongside his brother singer Liam Gallagher. The band has gone on to have eight UK number one singles and eight UK number one albums, and is best known for songs such as Wonderwall, Rock 'N' Roll Star and Live Forever. The guitarist formed the High Flying Birds after Oasis's initial break-up in 2009, who have gone on to have four UK number one albums.
