IND vs ENG: Ravichandran Ashwin pushes for Kuldeep Yadav to start in England series

India Today10 hours ago

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged the Indian team to consider playing left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav throughout the upcoming Test series against England, which begins on June 20.This suggestion comes as a surprise, given that Indian teams have traditionally avoided fielding more than one specialist spinner in English conditions. Typically, the combination has leaned toward three to four fast bowlers supported by a lone spinner, due to pitches that tend to favor seam and swing.advertisementAshwin, however, argued that India needs its best bowling attack to win matches - and in his view, Kuldeep is a guaranteed starter.
"When batsmen come through, the best bowling attack will win you matches. If they don't leave moisture on the pitch, then I think Kuldeep Yadav would be a certainty. And if there is moisture on the pitch, then Kuldeep should still be there," Ashwin said in an interview with RevSportz.During India's previous tour of England in 2021, the team played only one spinner, Ravindra Jadeja, while Ashwin himself was left out despite his experience. This time, a more flexible team combination could be on the cards - with Jadeja likely to bat higher up the order and the presence of all-rounders like Nitish Reddy or Shardul Thakur potentially freeing up a spot for Kuldeep.advertisementKuldeep has been a consistent wicket-taker despite limited opportunities in Tests. Remarkably, the only time he went wicketless in a Test was at Lord's in 2018 - also against England.Ashwin was upbeat about India's current bowling unit and their chances in English conditions. He believes they are capable of succeeding anywhere."Jasprit Bumrah should be No. 1, alongside Ravindra Jadeja, who offers control and can bat in the top five or six. This bowling attack can dismiss any batting lineup in any conditions. Not to forget [Mohammed] Siraj, who is like a warhorse."India's preparations are already underway, with the first day of the intra-squad game completed. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill impressed with fifties, while Shardul Thakur had a decent outing with the ball.A key decision now awaits Gill - leading the Test side for the first time - as he and the team management weigh their bowling options ahead of the opener.Must Watch

4 Indian Cricketers Who Are Playing In MLC 2025: Unmukt Chand, Agni Chopra And...

3 / 8 Agni Chopra, who holds the record of being the first cricketer to hit four tons in his first four Ranji Trophy matches while playing for Mizoram, is currently representing MI New York (MINY) in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 season. Agni, son of Bollywood director Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who played domestic cricket in India as recently as January 2025, was allowed to participate in MLC 2025 for MI New York due to a special reason. Interestingly, Agni is not an Indian passport holder despite being Indian. Chopra holds a USA citizenship due to his birth in Detroit. His dream to play in America came true as the BCCI recently amended their policy which stated that players with Indian passports would only be allowed to compete in the domestic tournaments. Earlier, overseas cricketers (even entire teams, such as those in the Duleep Trophy) had played domestic cricket in India, but they will no longer be allowed to do so.

The one who taught me that the only finish line worth crossing is the one you reach by never giving up! Lots of love," tagging his father's handle, @yograjofficial. Yograj Singh, a former India cricketer and an actor, is remembered for his strict, disciplinarian parenting — often described by Yuvraj as both demanding and defining. The lessons of hard work, mental toughness, and the refusal to quit clearly influenced Yuvraj's remarkable journey through Indian cricket , from a flamboyant match-winner to a cancer survivor who made an inspiring comeback. One of India's greatest limited-overs match-winners, Yuvraj played 402 international matches between 2000 and 2017, amassing over 11,000 runs. He was central to India's historic 2011 World Cup win, earning the Player of the Tournament award for his all-round brilliance - 362 runs and 15 wickets. He also etched his name in history with six sixes in an over during the 2007 T20 World Cup. Kuldeep Yadav hints at spin-friendly wicket ahead of England Test series While Yuvraj has often spoken about the tough love he received from his father, this public message reflected a softer, more thankful side of that bond — one built on grit, legacy, and enduring love.

Tendulkar Requests 'Pataudi Legacy' To Be Continued In India-England Tests: Report

Last Updated: Sachin Tendulkar has urged BCCI and ECB to retain the Pataudi legacy in the India vs England Test series, opposing plans to rename it the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has spoken to BCCI and the England Cricket Board officials to continue with the Pataudi legacy in the upcoming India vs England Test series, according to a report in Cricbuzz, after the boards decided to rename the series as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The trophy comes in place of the Pataudi Trophy, which was being given to the winners of the bilateral Test series in England, but as reports claim, the England Cricket Board has decided to retire it. ECB had communicated the decision to the members of the Pataudi family as well, although the reaction to the same have not been known. There seems to be a change of heart in the England Cricket Board after a request from Tendulkar himself. After the batting legend's request, Jay Shah, a former BCCI secretary and current chair of the ICC, came along and played a crucial role in ensuring that the Pataudi name in the bilateral series remains undiminished. 'Yes, there is a confirmed plan to retain the Pataudi link in the England-India series," an ECB official told Cricbuzz. It might be that the authorities will name a medallion in the name of the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, which will, in all likelihood, be given to the winning skipper. Meanwhile, the proposed grand launch of the trophy, the new symbol of supremacy for the Test series in England, has been postponed. The decision to defer the launch comes in the wake of the grim mood in India after the Ahmedabad plane crash. According to the report, the trophy-naming ceremony was scheduled for Saturday, June 14, on the sidelines of the WTC Final. 'Given the tragic events in India, the announcement may wait a while out of respect (for the lives lost). The BCCI are still deciding on the right time for the announcement. The announcement had been kept flexible due to the tragedy," an ECB official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. More than 275 people, including 241 on board AI-171 Air India aircraft that crashed near the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon, passed away in what is being regarded as one of the worst aviation disasters in the country.
