MIAMI - New dad Max Verstappen showed he was just as fast as a father after storming to pole position at the Miami Formula One Grand Prix ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris on Saturday.
Days after the Red Bull driver and partner Kelly Piquet welcomed daughter Lily, his first child, the four-times champion set a blistering lap of one minute 26.204 seconds around the Hard Rock Stadium.
"He's walking a step higher," said Verstappen's team boss Christian Horner.
"But we see time and time again, when he crosses that line into the garage and puts his helmet on, everything disappears. His ability to focus and deliver is insane. It's really truly impressive."
Norris, winner in Miami last year after Verstappen also secured pole for that race, was 0.065 slower and possibly taking comfort in the knowledge that no driver has won from pole at the track since the race debuted in 2022.
Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli qualified third fastest with McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri completing the second row.
Norris had earlier won the sprint race, trimming Australian Piastri's advantage to nine points, and now has a great chance to make further inroads.
"Congrats to Max, especially being a dad now. I was hoping it would slow him down," joked the Briton.
"Max did a Max lap once again and I can't fault him. I'm happy and excited for tomorrow."
George Russell qualified fifth for Mercedes with Williams' Carlos Sainz sixth and teammate Alex Albon seventh to make up for the disappointment of being demoted from the points in the sprint.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start eighth, after missing the sprint race due to a crash on the way from the pitlane to starting grid, and Esteban Ocon qualified ninth for Haas with Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda 10th.
Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton, third in the sprint, came swiftly back down to earth when he qualified only 12th for Ferrari.
Further back, Jack Doohan made it to the second phase and outqualified Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly for the first time with 14th place.
Haas rookie Ollie Bearman qualified last on another depressing session for Aston Martin, who had Fernando Alonso 17th and Lance Stroll 19th. REUTERS

PHOTO: REUTERS BEIJING – Xiaomi drew strong initial orders for its first electric sport utility vehicle intended to compete with Tesla's Model Y in China, sending its shares soaring 8 per cent to a lifetime high on June 27. The company a day earlier took the wraps off the 253,500 yuan (S$45,000) YU7, debuting its second car in a crowded EV market while grappling with scrutiny over its assisted-driving technology. Xiaomi drew a better-than-anticipated 289,000 orders in its first hour of availability. 'Consumer demand for Xiaomi's YU7 far exceeds our and market expectations, which should enable Xiaomi to continue consolidating its leadership position in the premium auto market in China,' Goldman Sachs analysts wrote. They raised their price target on the stock 6 per cent to HK$69. Xiaomi began taking pre-orders on June 26 with a 5,000 yuan deposit. In a surprise twist, founder Lei Jun declared that buyers of Xiaomi's first car – the SU7 sedan – have three days to switch to the SUV if they haven't taken delivery of the original vehicle. Xiaomi announced shortly after the event it had processed more than 200,000 pre-orders for the YU7 within three minutes. Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Steven Tseng and Sean Chen said: 'Xiaomi's launch of the YU7 SUV, and the option to switch existing SU7 sedan orders to YU7, could boost its EV sales growth to 209 per cent in 2025. SUVs are more popular than sedans in China, and the new model complements Xiaomi's product line to widen its customer reach, potentially winning orders from Tesla and Nio.' The top model goes for 329,900 yuan and can travel 760 kilometers (470 miles) on a single charge and accelerates to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.23 seconds. They come in nine colors, all equipped with lidar, which strengthens driver assistance technology, and an 800 volt platform for fast charging. Many feature the touches and amenities now familiar to Chinese drivers, from large touch screens and massage-chairs to drawers. 'We're going to face the biggest competitor, and also face fierce challenges from all the other manufacturers,' Mr Lei said at the launch event in Beijing. Mr Lei, who shot to fame with bold plans to unseat Apple in China, is counting on EVs to take on Elon Musk's Tesla and fuel the final chapter of his entrepreneurial career. He's pushed Xiaomi into new arenas from chip design to AI glasses, pledging to spend 200 billion yuan over five years to try and turn the Chinese company into a global device leader. Mr Lei attacked Tesla head-on during the June 26 launch event, stacking his vehicle against the Model Y much as he compares Mi devices with the iPhone. The YU7's price tag – largely in line with analysts' expectations – comes in just under the 263,500 yuan for the latest version of the Model Y, China's most popular SUV. BYD's Tang L SUV, slightly smaller than the YU7, sells for between 239,800 yuan and 289,800 yuan. The YU7's debut coincides with heightened concerns from Chinese authorities about an extended price war. BYD, Xiaomi and more than a dozen other automakers were warned to self-regulate and prevent the use of 'zero-mileage' used cars to inflate sales numbers and pay suppliers in a timely manner to improve the overall cash flow of the entire supply chain. Mr Lei remains confident about the prospects for Xiaomi's foray into cars, predicting the new model will help the company's EV unit achieve profitability in the second half – one of the fastest brands to hit that milestone in the automotive sector. Investors have warmed to that vision, sending shares north. Now worth around US$200 billion, it's bigger than BYD – the EV powerhouse that dominates the Chinese market – and its SU7 is outselling Tesla Model 3 so far this year. Beyond cars, the June 26 event also showcased a pair of 1,999 yuan black-rimmed AI glasses that can film video and answer questions off visual cues; the MIX Flip 2, Xiaomi's new folding phone; and a tablet that uses its in-house Xring O1 chip. The 24-year-old Australian said the pair had cleared the air and were ready to continue competing under the team's 'papaya rules'. 'Obviously what happened in Canada wasn't ideal,' he said ahead of this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix. 'But we're still free to race, still fighting for a championship each, so we'll keep going racing and make sure that, obviously, we don't come into contact again.' He added that they had 'spoken about it honestly before we even got back to the team' in Montreal. 'Lando put his hands up and apologised so it's all good and I'm looking forward to going racing again.' He also said he felt that McLaren's 'let them race, but responsibly' guidance was the 'correct approach' with two drivers competing for the world title. 'It's obviously a difficult one to navigate, but that's a good problem to have in some ways,' he said. 'The biggest and most important thing was just that things remain fair from as many aspects as you can. 'Obviously there's certain situations that are not always going to be completely fair, whether it's strategy because there's only one pit box or some other things... 'And, obviously, the first rule, regardless of whether it is written down or not, is that the two cars from the same team don't crash, so that's the big thing.' The pair clashed in Canada while fighting for fourth place when Norris misjudged an attempted passing move and hit his teammate's car. Piastri continued to finish fourth while Norris was forced to retire. Norris was involved in a collision with Verstappen while attempting to pass him during the Austrian Grand Prix last year and arrives in Spielberg needing a trouble-free weekend and a confidence-boosting result. Meanwhile, George Russell has suggested his contract renewal talks with Mercedes are being held up because the team are still keen to sign Verstappen. The 27-year-old Briton, winner in Canada two weeks ago, is out of contract at the end of the season while Verstappen has a deal with Red Bull until 2028, subject to get-out clauses. Russell told Sky Sports television at the Austrian Grand Prix that Mercedes, constructors' champions eight years in a row from 2014-2021 and currently second to McLaren, wanted to return to the top. 'If you're going to be back on top you need to make sure you've got the best drivers, the best engineers, the best pit crew, and that's what Mercedes are chasing,' he said. 'So, it's only normal that conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing. But from my side, if I'm performing as I'm doing, what have I got to be concerned about?
