Two Kapodra police station cops caught taking Rs 63,000 bribe
Surat: A female police sub-inspector and an assistant sub-inspector of Kapodra were caught on Thursday accepting Rs 63,000 as a bribe from a trader. They allegedly threatened him with harassment if he did not pay them.

PSI Madhu Rabari, ASI Navneet Jethwa, and their aide Mansinh Sidodiya were caught in a trap laid by the
Anti-Corruption Bureau
(ACB) following a complaint lodged by a person involved in a financial dispute with the trader. The trap was set at Hirabaug police chowki under the jurisdiction of Kapodra police station.
According to details, Rabari was investigating the application against the trader submitted to the Kapodra police station.
During the investigation, she allegedly threatened and abused the trader, demanding that he pay Rs 10 lakh to the applicant. The complainant gave around Rs 5 lakh and assured them he would pay the remaining amount once arranged. However, Rabari and Jethwa continuously sought recovery on behalf of the applicant and demanded a bribe to settle for a lesser amount.
Fed up with their threats and harassment, the trader approached the ACB.
Following this, ACB Vadodara unit assistant director PH Bhesania and inspector AN Prajapati laid the trap, taking along female inspector RB Prajapati. During the raid, all three, including Rabari, Jethwa, and Sisodiya, were caught taking Rs 63,000 in coordination with each other at Hirabaug police chowki.

Even after giving Rs 5 lakh to the applicant, the complainant was continuously harassed, threatened, and abused. We are investigating if any other officer is involved in seeking a bribe. We have come to know Sidodiya is Jethwa's relative who used to collect money on behalf of the accused," said sources close to the investigation.

KSEB owes police dept over 126 crore
Thiruvananthapuram: In a curious turn of events, Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd (KSEB) now finds itself in the red—not for unpaid power bills by others, but for dues it owes the police department. After a detailed reconciliation of long-standing mutual claims, the finance department ruled that KSEB must pay Rs 126.86 crore to the police, primarily for security services provided at vital power installations across the state. The development comes at a time when electricity bills are burdening not only the public but also govt departments. With rising power consumption—largely driven by the widespread use of air conditioners—several departments are struggling to pay their KSEB bills. In some cases, the situation has even started affecting public service delivery. For instance, agriculture department's scheme to provide subsidised power to eligible farmers was impacted due to the department's mounting KSEB dues. In this instance, KSEB itself defaulted on payments to the police department for years for protection services at the electricity utility's high-security installations like hydroelectric dams and power stations, which are guarded round the clock. These installations have long been on the state's critical infrastructure list, with agencies like intelligence bureau in 2021-22 warning that Idukki dam and similar sites could be targets for sabotage attempts, underscoring the need for continued, high-level surveillance. As per govt data, Rs 30.56 crore in KSEB's dues remained unpaid since prior to March 31, 2004—a liability that lingered for over two decades. Between 2004 and 2013, another Rs 46.56 crore was added as unpaid bills. From 2013 to 2023, the dues swelled to Rs 115.67 crore, including adjustments for govt's periodic revision of service charges meant to enhance non-tax revenue collection. As of March 31, 2024, KSEB owed the police department Rs 204.87 crore. But police too had outstanding dues to KSEB—particularly for power consumption. Notably, police department failed to pay its power bills for the entire 2023-24 financial year, and between 2004 and 2013, it accumulated Rs 60.34 crore in arrears. With both departments owing each other significantly, the matter was escalated to the finance department. After examining data from both sides, applying interest and multiplier factors for arrears and revised service rates, finance department settled the standoff. The final verdict: KSEB, after adjustments, still owes Rs 126.86 crore to the police. While the outcome may seem unusual, it highlights a lesser-known aspect of inter-departmental functioning where govt entities not only consume each other's services but often end up in prolonged financial entanglements. In this case, even state's electricity provider—accustomed to chasing dues—must now clear its own backlog with the very department that safeguarded its most critical assets.

Illegal B'deshis skipping usual entry points, learning Hindi first: Cops
Mumbai: Many Bangladeshi nationals illegally entering India are bypassing traditional illegal routes through West Bengal's Kalyani, Howrah and Kolkata due to increased border patrolling and are instead opting for roads to Guwahati, shows MIDC police's probe. Upon arrival, they allegedly stay confined to homes for some time to learn Hindi and scrub out all markers of identity from their speech to avoid detection when stepping out to look for jobs. MIDC police, who arrested seven illegal Bangladeshis in Mumbai and Pune last week, have found that agents in West Bengal are charging Rs 50,000-1 lakh each for forged Aadhaar and PAN cards to allow such immigrants to settle in different parts of the country. Of the seven who were arrested, five—all women—were sent to Pune immediately upon arrival in India and confined to a rental home. There, a police officer said, they underwent training in Hindi. The women worked as domestic help and at salons. Police caught them on June 26 and plan to take legal proceedings against the flat owner. Shaikh, a Bangladeshi, entered India through Guwahati and stayed in Palghar while being employed in Andheri for the past year. Authorities learnt that he brought at least six women from Bangladesh, employing them in Mumbai and Pune. Based on information from Shaikh, DCP (zone 10) Datta Nalawade led a team, including ACP Shashikant Bhosale, MIDC police inspector Sanjay Chavan, assistant inspector Yash Palwe, and SIs Mahadev Jagtap and Dhanshree Dembare, that nabbed two persons in Andheri and then the five women in Pune. The police investigation began after a govt resolution was issued on June 23, which held owners of establishments accountable if they employ illegal Bangladeshi migrants, effectively making them responsible for providing shelter to such individuals. It said govt will amend the laws, if needed, to initiate action against offenders. Govt will also implement an online system for document verification, according to the home department's directive.

AAP suspends MLA Kunwar Vijay for ‘anti-party activities'
Amritsar: Punjab's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday suspended its Amritsar North MLA and former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh from the party for five years. The decision, taken by the party's political affairs committee, cited alleged "anti-party activities" as the reason. A vocal critic of his own party's govt, Vijay Pratap had recently opposed the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia on charges of laundering more than Rs 540 crore of drug money. The vigilance bureau on June 25 arrested Majithia after conducting a raid at his residence in Amritsar. Confirming the suspension of the MLA, who joined AAP in 2021 ahead of the 2022 assembly elections, AAP spokesperson Shashivir Sharma said that the action was taken due to his involvement in "anti-party activities". Following the announcement, Vijay Partap posted a verse of Gurbani on his X account, which translates to, "Kabir, from death everyone in the world is afraid; but to me, my mind feels bliss." Despite repeated attempts, the MLA could not be reached for comment. During the 2022 assembly elections, Kunwar Vijay secured 58,133 votes, more than the combined votes of SAD candidate Anil Joshi and Congress nominee Sunil Dutti, and pushing BJP's Sukhminder Singh Pintu to fourth position. Pawan Kumar, a close aide of Vijay Pratap, said that a large number of the MLA's followers and sympathisers gathered at his residence after the news broke. Kumar called the party's decision "unjust and excessively harsh". The former inspector general of police once headed the SIT probing the 2015 Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan firing incidents besides sacrilege cases in the state. Sources said that several aspirants are already lobbying for the Amritsar North ticket for the 2027 polls if Vijay Pratap isn't reinstated. A few AAP functionaries already approached senior party leaders on Sunday. There's also speculation that an opposition leader might join AAP and be positioned as Vijay Partap's replacement in the next election.
