Memorable F1 races at Imola, from Alonso v Schumacher to Hamilton's hard rain
The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix is taking place against a backdrop of severe doubts over Imola's Formula One future. The deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix remain etched on F1's psyche but the demanding Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari has been the scene of some of the sport's most-compelling races. Here are three of the best:
Perhaps the finest of them all was Michael Schumacher's tangle with the young pretender Fernando Alonso in 2005 as they went nose to rear wing in the closing laps, the Ferrari clearly the quicker car after a late fuel stop, but the Spaniard holding the world champion at bay.
Alonso, then 23, beat the imperious German to the flag by a fifth of a second with a study in defensive driving, his third victory in a row and the fourth win in four races for his Renault team.
Yet Schumacher's masterful surge from 13th on the grid remains one of Formula One's legendary drives. As Richard Williams reported in the Guardian: 'On one lap he feinted to pass on the outside at the long Tosa hairpin, and on the next he probed for the inside. Going down the hill into Acque Minerali he attempted to push his car's red nose alongside the Renault's cockpit, and time and again he tried to get a run on Alonso at the Variante Alta, a chicane approached at 190mph. On each occasion Alonso, showing astonishing coolness, would hold a line that made it too risky for the Ferrari to go for the pass.'
The grand prix's gripping final 20 minutes enthralled the red-flag-waving tifosi, but it was to mark the passing of an era of Ferrari dominance as Schumacher would secure only one grand prix victory that season – the US GP at Indianapolis Speedway – as Alonso claimed his first driver's crown.
Alonso's feat drew comparisons with Gilles Villeneuve's win at Jarama, north of Madrid, in 1981 and Senna holding off a marauding Nigel Mansell at Monaco in 1992.
Remembered as the race won by a driver who never led a lap, and that had three different leaders in the last five laps without any of them winning.
In an era of thirsty turbo-charged engines, Imola was a punishing circuit for the wasteful. As Senna pointed out before the race: 'Pole isn't so important here at Imola than at some other tracks. It will be a long, hard race; hard on brakes and fuel consumption.'
Those words would come back to haunt him as, leading in a Lotus, Senna pulled up four laps from the chequered flag with his fuel tank dry. Then Stefan Johansson – in only his second race for Ferrari after they sacked René Arnoux – took over but he too dropped out a lap later cursing his bad luck after an electrical fault showed an incorrect fuel reading.
That left Alain Prost in a McLaren trying to coax every drop of fuel out of his car, but he crossed the finishing line 2kg underweight and the Frenchman's hard-earned win was scrubbed by the stewards.
Next to cross the line was Senna's Lotus teammate Elio de Angelis, and he was handed an unlikely victory after much wrangling. It was to be the popular Italian's last. He was killed while testing a Brabham at Paul Ricard the following year.
Adding to the Imola farce, Thierry Boutsen ran out of fuel as he reached the start-finish straight on his final lap. To cross the line, he got out and pushed his Arrows to secure second place on the podium. As Williams' laconic Nigel Mansell grumbled: 'It wasn't really racing.'
A downpour before the start left a saturated but drying Imola fraught with peril for the incautious. Max Verstappen read the conditions correctly and pipped the pole-sitting Lewis Hamilton to the first corner, surging from third on the grid and holding the inside line while Hamilton was forced wide and struck the kerbs, damaging his front wing.
Rather than losing ground, however, the Mercedes driver closed on his Red Bull rival as the track began to dry. Hamilton's task was made all the harder when, in trying to lap George Russell, he was pushed wide again, his slicks crashing into the gravel.
Striking the barriers cost him a lap and apparently the race too. Yet at midway a huge shunt involving Valtteri Bottas and Russell led to a red flag and allowed Hamilton to rejoin in ninth place and work his way through the pack, finishing second behind Verstappen, who crossed the line 20 seconds in front of his Mercedes rival.
'The recovery drive was really brilliant,' the Mercedes principal, Toto Wolff, purred of Hamilton's race. 'It is a 10 out of 10.'

Montreal Grand Prix fans stuck paying turbocharged prices for accommodation
MONTREAL — Paula Wadden has been a huge Formula One fan ever since she got hooked on the Netflix show "Drive to Survive" a few years ago. But the Halifax-area health-care worker says watching the Grand Prix in Montreal this weekend comes with high-octane prices. Advertisement The Montreal hotel where she's spending the first part of the week doubles in price for the weekend. Instead, she'll spend the weekend at a hotel outside the city, near the airport, for about $600 a night. "The tickets (prices) are OK, it's the accommodation and the means that are getting expensive," she said Tuesday in Old Montreal. "I don't know how the average Joe can afford it." Wadden said the trip, which she's taking with her daughter and her daughter's partner, will cost $6,000 to $7,000. And that's despite the switch in hotels and the decision to save money by driving the 12 hours from Halifax rather than flying. While looking up hotels online, she said she saw even more eye-watering hotel prices ranging between $1,200 to more than $2,000 a night, as well as $4,000-per night Airbnbs. Advertisement The Grand Prix is Montreal's biggest tourist event, expected to attract some 350,000 visitors and generate $162 million for the city, according to the head of Tourisme Montreal. Yves Lalumière estimates average hotel room prices on Grand Prix weekend at $600 to $800 per night — although some wealthy CEOs will pay $8,000 for a suite. "This year's prices will probably stabilize quite a bit, maybe a two to three per cent increase over the previous year," he said in an interview. "But the last five years I've seen an increase year after year, and a substantial increase as well." A ticket package for the three race days starts at $360, according to the Canadian Grand Prix website — though well-off fans can pay much more. Packages with perks such as VIP concierge service, reservations at popular restaurants and parties, and access to areas such as pit lanes and paddocks can run in the tens of thousands of dollars. However, Lalumière noted that the city also offers plenty of free entertainment, including a Grand Prix party on Crescent Street. And he said hotel room prices are still "very competitive," especially for those paying in U.S. dollars or euros. Advertisement Crowds, meanwhile, are not only growing but also becoming more diverse, he said. "I think F1 has done a great job in selling the sport over the media," Lalumière said. "And, therefore, now you're attracting a lot more ladies, you're attracting a lot more young people as well to the race." Black-and-white checkered banners were already fluttering on St-Paul Street in Old Montreal on Tuesday, as tourists lined up to photograph a Formula One car on display outside Max Bitton's racing-themed store, Fanabox. Bitton said he brought in the car as a gift to fans after last year's Grand Prix, which was marred by mishaps on and off the track that left a bad taste in some fans' mouths. Those issues included traffic headaches, flooding from rain, fans turned away from a practice session they were led to believe was cancelled, and restaurants ordered to suddenly close their patios on one of the busiest evenings of the year. "I'm trying to give back because last year was so tough," Bitton said. Advertisement While Grand Prix fans are generally well-off, Bitton also worries about rising prices, especially now that the city has imposed tougher new rules on short-term rentals for primary residences. Next year, the Grand Prix will be held from May 22 to 24, which is outside the June-to-September window in which primary residence rentals are allowed. "A lot of the fans love to flock here because of the heritage and they love this place," Bitton said. "They're willing to pay more but at some point it doesn't make sense." At Bitton's store, tourists said attending the Grand Prix was costly, but worthwhile. Max Harrison, from Bournemouth in southern England, said he managed to find a spot in a hostel for about $40 a night early in the week. For race weekend, he's spending $200 a night to stay in a room in an Airbnb shared with several others. "It's a bit much, you can tell they've spiked (the prices)," he said. Advertisement He believes "Drive to Survive" has brought new fans to the sport, which means prices will only continue to go up. But for him, it's worth it to check the Montreal Grand Prix off his bucket list. "The championship this year is looking really close, so it's going to be a really good race," he said. "And Canada is a beautiful place and I've always wanted to come." Denise Beevor and Mark Omerod, from West Sussex in England, say they're spending 'a small fortune' for a 10-day trip that includes Sunday's race as well as stops in Quebec City and Mont-Tremblant. "I think, particularly since COVID, it's important to have things to look forward to and to take memories away with you, and you can't replace that," Beevor said. "Possessions come and go, memories don't." Advertisement The CEO of the greater Montreal hotels association said the occupancy this weekend is expected to be around 90 per cent, similar to last year. Dominique Villeneuve said the industry was prepared to meet the demands of Grand Prix weekend "enthusiastically and with the same professionalism that characterizes our industry." Nick Woltemade was slated to leave Germany's camp in favor of U-21s, but is sticking around for France match
With Germany losing 2-1 to Portugal, head coach Julian Nagelsmann was prepared to send Nick Woltemade to the U-21s for the EUROs (via @iMiaSanMia): Nick Woltemade will join the U21 national team immediately and will not feature in Sunday's Nations League third place playoff Julian Nagelsmann: 'We will send him to the U21s. We agreed that would be the case if we don't reach the final. I want to stick to the agreement so that they can have a good tournament.' Well, not so fast... After examining the exact schedule of the U-21s, Nagelsmann decided to keep Woltemade longer per Bild (via @iMiaSanMia): Update: Change of plan for Woltemade. He will stay with the senior national team because the U-21s have Friday and Saturday off. The striker will train with the senior NT and will be in the squad in the third place match on Sunday, but he'll most likely be rested ahead of the U-21 EUROs. Nick Woltemade ready to take 'winning mentality' to Germany U21s
Rising German star Nick Woltemade continues to live life in the footballing fast lane. The VfB Stuttgart striker captured the DFB Pokal title with his Bundesliga club a couple of weeks ago. Shortly thereafter, he made his senior German national team debut. Woltemade impressed in his first start for country, so much so that his stay with the seniors was unexpectedly 23-year-old will nevertheless not have time to relish his second game under Julian Nagelsmann. Advertisement As soon as Sunday's fixture is completed, Woltemade is due in the camp of Germany U21 head coach Antonio di highly talented forward shall pull double duty for country this summer. The DFB expects him to help out in the coming U21 European championship. Woltemade spoke on his meteoric rise this year in an interview published on the German FA's website. The Bremen-native could have hardly envisaged all of these exciting developments just one year ago. Stuttgart snapped Woltemade up on a free from Bremen last summer. At the time, he maintained an estimated €7.5m market value. VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß famously left him off Stuttgart's squad for the 2024/25 Champions League group stages. Thanks to 17 goals across all competitions for club this season, Woltemade is now a bonafide €30m-valued star. He also got his name on the scoresheet in all four U21 appearances for country this year and scored a hat trick in his last U21 match. Advertisement 'When I was little, I always hoped that I would be able to achieve these goals one day,' Woltemade noted in his DFB interview. 'The fact that it's all happening so quickly is very exciting and also very crazy. I'm hoping there's more success this summer and it leads to a good conclusion.'\ Woltemade commented on his re-union with former Werder Bremen teammate Niclas Füllkrug on the German national team as well. Füllkrug and Woltemade played alongside each other for three seasons in both the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga between 2019 and 2022. Woltemade would end up missing the Bundesliga campaign that rendered Füllkrug an unlikely German national team star (2022/23) as he was on loan at SV Elversberg. Füllkrug's move to Dortmund the subsequent autumn finally enabled him to start getting some minutes for his academy side. 'Back then, I said: Imagine if we play together for the national team one day,' Woltemade said of the last time he and Füllkrug played together, in the German second division no less. 'It's really funny.' Advertisement As for his impressions of the Julian Nagelsmann's senior Nationalmannschaft, Woltemade stuck to some simple praise of DFB captain Joshua Kimmich. After that, it was time to look forward to the U21 tournament and next summer's World Cup. 'Jo Kimmich in particular exemplifies the winning mentality of the guys here,' Woltemade said.
