People have been advised to stay alert with temperatures set to reach 30C this weekend - here's how to keep your home cool and your loved ones healthy in the heatwave
Brits across large swathes of the country have been warned to 'take precautions' due to the upcoming heat wave this weekend. Temperatures are set to soar to 30C, leading the Met Office and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to issue a yellow heat-health alert for the first time this year.
The Weather-Health alerting system warning will be in place from 9pm on Thursday to 8am on Sunday across the East of England, East Midlands, London and South East regions. With the temperatures forecast, UKHSA data predicts a likely spike in the use of healthcare services by vulnerable members of the population - plus a heightened risk to people over 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

"Our findings show that even moderate heat can result in serious health outcomes, especially for older adults, and it is therefore important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun," said Dr Agostinho South, UKHSA's head of extreme events and health protection.

"The forecasted high temperatures are expected to be short-lived but could primarily impact those over the age of 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions. If you have friends, family or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice."
Thankfully, plenty of advice is out there on how to keep safe during periods of hot weather, including five top tips from the UKHSA. They are:
Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them
Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun
If you do go outside, cover up with suitable clothing, such as an appropriate hat and sunglasses, and seek shade and apply sunscreen regularly
Keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm
If you are going to do a physical activity (for example, exercising or walking the dog), plan to do these during times of the day when it is cooler, such as the morning or evening
Staying hydrated can stave off heat-induced headaches or, more seriously, heatstroke and putting water bottles in the freezer is another top tip. And while warm showers may sound like a surprising suggestion, if your body temperature is running hot they will cool you down.
Drinking hot tea or coffee is also said to counteract the heat by raising your core temperature, causing you to sweat and ultimately cool off. And take advantage of the pressure points on your wrists and ankles, resting them in a bowl of cold water to cool you down.

A drought has been declared across Yorkshire by the Environment Agency (EA).The drought is due to weeks of usually dry weather across the county, which has meant low water levels in rivers and reservoirs. The announcement comes after England experienced its driest spring in more than 100 years, according to the Met Water's announcement isn't the first of 2025 - in late May a drought was declared for the North West. Claire Barrow, the Environment Agency's planning manager for Yorkshire, said: "We had 22 days of almost no recorded rainfall in May.""While we have had some rain at the start of June, it has not been enough to reverse the impacts of the prolonged dry weather."If there's not enough rain then the levels in the reservoirs that supply water across a certain area go down and if they fall beyond a certain level over a period of time then a drought is the drought announcement doesn't change much right now for those in Yorkshire, if the dry weather continues measures could be put in place to help reduce the amount of water could include things such as bans on using hosepipes. Yorkshire's last drought occurred in 2022 - at this time a hosepipe ban was put in place. The 2022 ban lasted from August to that drought, Yorkshire Water also made recommendations to customers such as: singing a four minute song whilst showering to keep showers shortonly cleaning cars' mirrors, windows and lights and not watering garden lawns Yorkshire Water said that reservoir levels are at 62.3% - which they say is a lot lower than the average for this time of year (85.5%).But a spokesperson for the company said the reduction in levels had slowed due to some recent rainfall.

The UK witnessed the warmest meteorological spring and May since records began in 1884, coupled with high temperatures in late June. ‌ This has created what specialists describe as "ideal" conditions for an increase in pollen. ‌ Those tormented by hay fever know all too well that symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes often intensify from late March right up to September, heavily influenced by weather patterns, reports the Mirror. There's no magic pill for hay fever, but experts stress the importance of pre-emptive actions to keep those pesky symptoms at bay. Saxton Blades' very own DIY expert, Glen Peskett, chimes in with some sound advice for sniffle-stricken Brits: allergy-proofing is key and that means windows and doors should stay firmly shut between the hours of 10am and 3pm, especially on blustery days. Glen added: "It's important to get fresh air, and when the weather begins to improve, it's even more tempting to open your home up to the warmer elements. "However, during peak pollen times - usually between 10 am and 3 pm, and on windy days - it's extremely beneficial to keep your windows and doors shut. This is especially important in bedrooms, where you want to breathe easy at night."
