Long Island Ducks begin 25th season with a few twists
The Long Island Ducks have flown together for 25 years.
As the 2025 season kicks off in Islip on Friday night, the fun-filled Atlantic League ball club is celebrating what has been a highly successful (webbed) footprint stamped on the island.
'It starts with the fans. We have great fans here on Long Island who support the team like it's the highest level of the game,' manager Lew Ford, a longtime Ducks outfielder who played for the Twins in the mid-2000s and some games with the Orioles in 2012, told The Post.
'It's also great baseball. Guys that start the season here can end the season in the major leagues,' Ford added of the independent, MLB partner league that's boasted huge names such as Roger Clemens and the late Rickey Henderson in the past.
The Ducks, who have won four league championships since becoming a franchise in 2000, have also had their own Hall of Fame star power guide the team toward success.
Mets great Gary Carter managed the team in 2009, and Bud Harrelson was a co-owner and coach who was a fan favorite known for working with kids at team clinics.
'I ended up coaching with Buddy later, too,' Ford said. 'He was such a personable guy, and watching him interact with the fans and players, I loved him. He was one of the best.'
Playfully, the team displays a Pete Rose Cincinnati Reds jersey in a bar area of the stadium as a homage to the fracas between Harrelson and Rose during the 1973 NLCS.
This season, however, the Ducks are looking to the future and not past glory days.

The team installed a new turf field with bright orange basepaths, and Ford called the move 'a huge upgrade' for 2025.
Long Island, which has consistently been a league leader in attendance thanks to fun on-field fan games in between innings and Duck mascot Quackerjack, is also bolstering its home season with several fireworks nights that typically sell out the 6,000-seat stadium.
'It's not just the fans, the players love those games, too,' Ford said. 'We bring our families on those nights. We're looking at a great year ahead.'
In boys lacrosse, Massapequa hosts Port Washington at 5 p.m. Friday, and in girls lacrosse, South Side hosts Kellenberg on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Section V star commits to play football at Oregon after offers from 20-plus schools
James Monroe junior receiver Messiah Hampton, the No. 1 ranked football player in New York state, officially committed to Oregon today. Hampton announced his commitment at Monroe High School Friday afternoon. According to Hampton's account, he recorded 21 touchdowns and 1,900 all-purpose yards during his junior season in 2024. Advertisement Hampton may be the most decorated football prospect in Section V history. He's received well over 20 Division I scholarship offers. He revealed Syracuse, Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia and Miami as his top seven schools in May. A four star athlete via Hampton will join Oregon coach Dan Lanning's Ducks finished 2024 with a 13-1 record. Oregon finished No. 3 in the final Associated Press poll. Oregon secures commitment from 2026 New York four-star WR Messiah Hampton
Class of 2026 four-star wide receiver Messiah Hampton will make the cross-country trek to the Pacific Northwest to play college football, as the New York athlete has committed to Oregon. Hampton ranks as the No. 65 player overall in the 2026 cycle. He also ranks as the No. 1 prospect in the state of New York and No. 10 wide receiver in the class. Advertisement He announced his pledge to the Ducks on Friday, following an official visit to Eugene earlier this week. He made multiple trips to Oregon in the spring as well. The James Monroe High School (Rochester, New York) standout received nearly 30 scholarship offers throughout his recruitment, but he has ultimately decided to play for head coach Dan Lanning, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks Will Stein, wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator Ross Douglass and the Ducks. Development is important to Hampton, and he believes that is something the Oregon staff does very well. "I'd say development, just watching the coaches coach — see how they develop players, see how they coach players, how they respond to mistakes, just how they coach them," Hampton previously told Rivals when asked what he was hoping to learn on his official visits. In addition to Oregon, Hampton also took official visits to Penn State, Miami (FL.) and Syracuse as well. The 6-foot-1, 198-pound Hampton is a three-level playmaker at wide receiver, and also makes a big impact as a returner on special teams. He recorded 1,900 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns as a junior at James Monroe in 2024, and earned first-team All-State honors for his efforts. Hampton also competes in track and field. In the classroom, Hampton carries a 3.9 grade point average. With Hampton's pledge, Oregon's 2026 class now grows to eight total commitments.
