A WOMAN, 81, has been reunited with the car she learnt to drive in six decades after he father saved it from a scrapheap.
Merriel Gallifant's father, Harry Booth, bought the 1929 Singer Junior from a scrapyard in 1961, and the teenager, then 16, used it to learn to drive.

Quickly becoming a grease monkey, she fondly remembers practising gearstick changes in front of her father's Old Cottage Paint shop in Stanway, Essex.
Sadly, just a year later, her Dad flogged her beloved wheels to David and Sylvia Rouse for a fiver.
Astonishingly, Merriel was reunited with her old flame at a classic car rally thirty years later.
The Rouse's were displaying the well-loved wheels at a car rally when Merriel spotted the old banger.
She exclaimed, 'That's my Car!' and showed the couple a snap of her teenage self sitting on the bonnet back in the day.
Mr Rouse was very attached to the Singer, using it daily, taking it for spins at vintage car club events, competing in hill climbs, driving tests and navigational rallies and tours.
The couple kept their bargain motor for 57 years before David died in 2017.
Mrs Rouse sold their vintage car collection but kept the Singer until Merriel approached her, buying the token from her childhood back in 2019.
Selflessly, Merriel waved goodbye to her four-wheeled first love once again, selling it at auction for £4.1k and donating every penny to St Helena Hospice.
Auctioneer, Lewis Rabett from auctioneers Reeman Dansie, said: 'It's a beautiful little car with a heart-warming story.

'A proper full-circle moment. There's even a photo of Merriel with the car now and back when she was a teenager – not much has changed!'
He added: 'It's a niche buy, but for the right person, this car is an absolute gem. It's been loved and lived in – and it shows.'

Elon Musk's estranged dad Errol hails Russia as the ‘peak of civilisation' & gushes over Putin at staged Moscow event

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) TESLA tycoon Elon Musk's estranged dad Errol has hailed Russia as the "peak of civilisation" - and even gushed over mad Vladimir Putin. Errol Musk, 79, made the explosive remarks in Moscow where he appeared at a Kremlin-backed event organised by the Russian dictator's inner circle. Credit: X 8 US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk (R) speak before departing the White House two months ago Credit: AFP It comes just days after his billionaire son's high-profile alliance with the US President imploded in a fierce online feud. Musk Snr took part in the Tsargrad propaganda forum where he bizarrely declared Moscow the "best capital" in the world. Marking his first time in Russia, Errol said: "I think the image that people give to us in the West of Russia is completely wrong. "Russia is wonderful, it's absolutely amazing. He added how it was "quite clear" that Moscow was better than any other city across the globe. Not only did the South African businessman praise Russia however, but also its mad leader Putin and, in turn, challenged the West's portrayal of him and his country. Errol said: "I think [Putin] is a very impressive man - he's proved that. A very stable, impressive man. "As for the perception of Russia, it's very wrong." He added: "So the perception in America by the media, I will call it the fake media, is that Russia is a bad place and its full of very bad people, and they're all going to kill you to come here, which is complete nonsense." He explained how he was coming to Russia with his daughter Alexandra - but his sons told her that she musn't go "under any circumstances". And after Errol himself claims to have been given warnings on going to Moscow, he said he "arrived here, and the first thing I saw was a perfect total civilisation in every direction." He added: "I see a city that easily rivals ancient Rome. "And probably, I made a comment to somebody earlier, it's by far not by a little but by far the premier capital city in the world." Errol also discussed his estranged Tesla tycoon son Elon and his astronautics exploration company SpaceX - but credited Russia as originally being the "leader" of space engineering before his son "took over". He said it "all started off with the Russian attempts" which he said were "quite amazing". Just a day ago, speaking of the explosive feud between Elon and US President Trump, Musk Snr revealed that his son was grappling with regret and fatigue from his turbulent stint in Washington. He said: 'So at the moment, Elon is inclined to say that he's made a mistake.' 'Trump will prevail. He's the president, he was elected as the president. 'Elon made a mistake, I think, but he's tired, he's stressed. 8 Errol is currently in Moscow to appear at a Kremlin-backed forum 8 Russia's President Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting on Russia's language policy at the Novo-Ogaryovo state residence Credit: AFP 8 Elon Musk and Donald Trump's bromance is now beyond repair 8 Elon Musk, wearing two hats, speaks during a cabinet meeting in the Cabinet Room of the White House Credit: AFP 8 "They are all suffering from a bit of PTSD, a post-traumatic stress disorder over the last few months, they started hitting out at each other. 'And then in the end, it's just him and Trump left… They still don't know what to do, so they fight with each other until they can come to normal conditions.' And in response to a question from a Russian propaganda publication on how to "raise a genius," Errol said that a child needed to be "spanked a lot". Errol's ex-wife and Elon's mum Maye accused him of beating her during their marriage. She also once revealed that Elon tried to stand up for her during one of the beatings as a child. Errol has always denied being abusive to his ex-wife. Errol will speak at the Future Forum 2050, organised by Malofeev and Putin ideologist and 'philosopher' Alexander Dugin. Meanwhile, Russia appears eager to capitalize on Musk's estrangement from the US political elite. Putin crony Dmitry Medvedev cheekily offered to mediate peace talks between 'D and E' — Trump and Elon— 'for a reasonable fee and to accept Starlink shares as payment.' Another Kremlin loyalist, ex-space chief Dmitry Rogozin, publicly offered Musk asylum. 'You are respected in Russia. If you encounter insurmountable problems in the US, come to us and become one of us,' Rogozin wrote. Russia would offer him 'reliable comrades and complete freedom of technical creativity'. TRUMP FALLOUT The world's richest man Musk — who reportedly donated $288 million to Trump's 2024 campaign and briefly served as a White House aide — has now turned on the president over his sweeping tax and spending bill. Elon even claimed on X that Trump was tied to disgraced paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, though the post was later deleted and the White House dismissed the allegation outright. Their bromance is now beyond repair. On Sunday, Trump confirmed to NBC that he has no interest in making amends: 'I would assume so, yeah,' he said when asked if their relationship was over. 'I have no intention of speaking to him.' The former allies have been locked in an escalating war of words for days - throwing insults at each other in an explosive dispute.

Our lives are being made hell by angry shoppers parking in our street… despite 500-space strong car park metres away

Residents say Costco shoppers leave them abused, blocked in, and fed up daily AT ALL COSTS Our lives are being made hell by angry shoppers parking in our street… despite 500-space strong car park metres away Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FURIOUS locals say their lives are being made a misery by Costco shoppers clogging up their street — even though there's a huge 500-space car park just metres away. Residents of Torrington Avenue in Coventry claim they're being sworn at and even threatened by customers using their road to park instead of the store's own car park. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Locals claim abuse from Coventry Costco customers over parking issue Credit: Google 3 Locals say the situation gets worse on weekends and during Costco's busiest hours Credit: Google They've now begged the council for a residents-only parking scheme, saying the situation is unbearable — especially for those with kids or mobility issues. In a petition to the council, they said: 'Customers regularly use the street to park which at peak times not only means that residents struggle to find space but have recently also been facing verbal abuse and threats from customers.' They added: 'The current parking situation is especially an issue for those with small children and limited mobility as having to park further away constantly is a challenge. "Costco has over 500 spaces which is more than ample to meet demand, and there is no reason why customers and staff need to use the street at the expense of residents.' Locals say the situation gets worse on weekends and during Costco's busiest hours. Some have even resorted to putting up cones and signs in a desperate attempt to keep spaces outside their homes clear. One resident, who didn't want to be named, said: 'It's chaos some days. "You get people blocking driveways and shouting abuse when you ask them to move. "It's just not right when there's a perfectly good car park sitting almost empty.' Despite the outcry, Coventry City Council looks set to reject the request. Officials say parking levels in the area simply don't meet the threshold needed for action. A similar bid for restrictions was made last year, also covering Torrington Avenue between the A45 and Eastcotes. That too was knocked back after surveys showed enough spaces were still available. A council report explained: 'The parking survey conducted in response to that petition showed that the section of Torrington Avenue highlighted did not meet the parking availability criterion set out in the Council's Residents' Parking Policy (less than 40 per cent of spaces available during the daytime).' A follow-up check on Thursday 3 April 2025 reached the same conclusion — with 54 per cent of spaces free, well above the required threshold. The report concluded: 'As the recent parking survey shows that the number of parking spaces available during the daytime (54 per cent) still exceeds the criterion for consideration for a residents' parking scheme, the Cabinet Member is recommended to decline the request for a residents' parking scheme on Torrington Avenue between Eastcotes and the A45.' The final decision rests with Councillor Patricia Hetherton, the cabinet member for city services, who will make the call at a meeting on Tuesday, June 11. Residents say they fear things will only get worse if action isn't taken soon. Some have even started discussions about installing private barriers or applying for dropped kerbs to stop people using their space. Another local added: 'We understand people want to save a bit of time by parking on the road, but it's not fair on us who live here. "We just want to be able to park near our homes without having to deal with arguments or walk down the street with kids and shopping.' Despite the council's findings, residents say they'll keep fighting. They're urging others in the area to speak out and hope that pressure from the community might still sway the decision. The Sun has reached out to both Costco and Coventry City Council.
