Potential flooding in Northport leaves one homeowner preparing for the worst
NORTHPORT, Ala. (WIAT) — Northport homeowner David Filmore said he's preparing for potential flooding this week.
For nearly seven years, Filmore said flooding has been an issue outside of his home on 71st Avenue, as the rain often flows from the road to his backyard, creating a pool of rainwater and leaving damage to his home.

'It runs all across my driveway, runs into my garage, runs under my house,' said Filmore. 'I've done a lot of work on my yard. Half of my yard is covered in gravel.'
Filmore believes the problem stems from the structure of the road and the water drainage system, creating a lack of rainwater to flow to the main rain ditch at the bottom of this creek near his home.
It's an issue he said he's presented to the city over the years, citing the damage to his home and his fears of it being a potential hazard to drivers.
'Nobody does the speed limit on this 35 MPH road. Somebody's going to get in there and get in the mud, run off in the ditch on my side or somebody will hit somebody or hit another car head on,' said Filmore.
After years of speaking out about this, Filmore said city officials have acknowledged his concern and progress is slowly being made. He says workers have moved a water line that was across the street from his home.

But on heavy rainy days like those expected this week, he can't help but wish that progress would speed up.
'I just want to see the water flow where it's supposed to and quit flooding my yard,' said Filmore.
CBS 42 reached out to the Northport City Engineer Department for comment on this issue, we are still waiting to hear back.

Crane needed to remove large tree that fell on Lawrenceville home in storm
Heavy rain and gusty wind toppled trees in a Lawrenceville neighborhood on Saturday. Neighbors said they were greatly relieved that no one was hurt when it crashed on a Lake Ridge Terrace home on Saturday. 'It was really pouring. The wind was gusting real badly,' Cristen Safrid said. The severe weather sent a towering tree from the yard of her rental home, crashing onto the home next door. Safrid said she was at dinner at the time. The tree also sliced through another building on the property. 'We looked in the backyard, and sure enough, tree down on this side, and a tree on our right side went into the neighbor's roof a little bit. It was a really big tree, and it's not like it was a dead tree so, surprised that it was down like that,' Safrid said. Crews using a large crane cut sections of the tree using chainsaws . They then removed the sections from the roof of the home. The process took several hours. Safrid said her neighbor was at home when the massive tree toppled over. The tree did more damage to the smaller structure than the home. 'Nobody got hurt, but it was a huge tree. And it really could've been bad if it had went in a different direction,' Safrid said. The woman who lives at the house hit by the tree told Tom Regan that, in addition to the roof damage, there was interior damage, some of it caused by rain falling through a hole in the roof. Students stranded on Cahaba River rescued

Warmer weather has finally arrived in New York, which means neighborhoods will be filled with the sound of buzzing bees, chirping birds — and the drone of lawnmowers and trimmers. While necessary, it can be frustrating if people enjoy taking care of their lawns early in the morning or late at night while you're trying to sleep, but there are laws governing when you can landscape and maintain your yard. Here's what to know. Yes, there are yardwork-related noise regulations throughout the Rochester area, but they vary between municipalities. Here's a look at the noise ordinances in the city of Rochester, Irondequoit, Greece, Brighton and Henrietta: : You can use lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, tillers, mulchers, chippers and other lawncare devices between the hours of 8 a.m. and sunset. : You can't use certain machinery if it creates excessive noise at the premises' property line, including lawn mowers, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 9 a.m. : You can use lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, tiller, mulchers, chippers and other lawncare devices between the hours of 8 a.m. and sunset. : There aren't specific noise ordinances relating to lawncare but "the creation of any unreasonably loud, disturbing and unnecessary noise is prohibited." : You can't use any motor-driven vehicle, including lawnmowers, without "an adequate muffler properly installed and maintained." It differs. If you violate a yardwork-related noise regulation, penalties range from fines to imprisonment. For example, first offenses in the city of Rochester come with a fine of $200, second offenses, $400, and third and subsequent offenses, $600. In the towns of Irondequoit and Greece, you could face fines or up to 15 days of imprisonment.
