Family pleads with public to help police find Olorato Mongale's killers

'Some of the belongings of the victim, including a phone and a handbag, were found abandoned on 9th Road in Kew. Her body was found less than two hours later, around 4.50pm in Lombardy West by police with the help of community members.'
Detectives said they are investigating the possibility that the man, who called himself 'John', was with another man when Mongale was killed.
Mathe said a similar case, involving the murder of a 39-year-old woman whose body was found in Catherine Street in Sandown, Sandton, on May 8, is also under investigation by Gauteng police.
Earlier this month, police arrested a man who was targeting women on Facebook using a fake profile and identity. The 24-year-old man is in custody pending trial on a charge of kidnapping and rape. He allegedly lured a 28-year-old woman from Gauteng to Limpopo under false pretences and raped her repeatedly. She was later rescued by police at a filling station in Giyani.
'While police investigating teams are on the ground on the Olorato Mongale case and several other cases of gender-based violence and femicide, we are urging women to be extra vigilant. Women are also urged to always report their whereabouts to friends and family when meeting new friends or going on dates. Meet only in public spaces,' Mathe said.
Kananda urged society to come together to ensure the safety and dignity of all women, and to demand accountability for those who perpetrate violence.
'Olorato was a bright light in our lives, and we are committed to ensuring that her memory lives on. That she is remembered not as a statistic but as Olorato Mongale, who changed how the country responds to gender-based violence and femicide.'

Body of missing Joburg schoolgirl Likhona Fose, 14, found in veld

Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane on Monday sent the department's psychosocial support team to offer trauma counselling to classmates and teachers who knew Likhona Fose, who was found murdered at the weekend. The 14-year-old grade 8 pupil at Ikusasalethu Secondary School in Braamfischerville, Johannesburg, is understood to have lived with her grandmother. She went missing on Saturday and her mutilated body was found in the veld at Durban Deep, Roodepoort, on Sunday. 'While police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding this brutal incident, we are devastated by Likhona's death during National Child Protection Week, where we raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in our constitution. 'As the department, we cannot begin to express how disheartened we are by the loss of Likhona, a young girl learner who had a bright future ahead of her. For her life to have been taken from her in such a brutal manner is unacceptable and we call on law enforcement authorities to speedily apprehend those responsible. 'We extend our sincerest condolences to the family and the school community of Ikusasalethu Secondary, assuring them we share their pain,' said Chiloane. TimesLIVE

Olorato Mongale's family pleads with SAns to show compassion to man cleared as suspect in her murder

BLOEMFONTEIN - The family of Olorato Mongale is pleading with South Africans to show compassion towards Fezile Ngubane, the man police cleared in connection with the 30-year-old's murder. Ngubane was taken in for questioning last week, but authorities have since confirmed that he played no role in Mongale's death. The master's student was laid to rest in Bloemfontein on Sunday, a week after her body was found dumped in Lombardy West in Gauteng. They said that Mongale would not have wanted Ngubane to pay for a crime he didn't commit, adding that the 30-year-old would have wanted the KwaZulu-Natal man to rebuild his life. The Mongale family said that Ngubane was also a casualty, adding they believed that Olorato fought for justice from beyond the grave. "The most incredible thing that happened with Olorato is that as she goes, as she bows out, she made sure that a co-victim is liberated because he was wrongfully accused," said family spokesperson Chriselda Kananda. The family said they were still searching for closure, with the second suspect still on the run.

Olorato Mongale murder: After being cleared as a suspect, Fezile Ngubane vows to turn life around

JOHANNESBURG - After being mistakenly being named as a suspect in the murder of Olorato Mongale, Fezile Ngubane has vowed to turn his life around. Following the killing of Mongale, police released a picture of Ngubane, branding him as a wanted suspect. ALSO READ: - Olorato Mongale murder: Family of man who turned himself in feared he would be killed by vigilantes - Olorato Mongale's family says it won't find peace until all suspects in her murder brought to justice - Olorato Mongale funeral: 'We will not rest until we find Bongani Mthimkhulu' - deputy police minister But after handing himself over to police on Friday, Ngubane was cleared of the allegations when investigations showed that his identity was being used by the masterminds. Mongale's body was found in Johannesburg a few hours after she went missing. Fezile spends most of his days washing cars and smoking whoonga, a common drug also known as nyoape. It's not how his parents imagined his life would turn out after he enrolled for a qualification in civil engineering at the Mangosuthu University of Technology many years ago. Fezile's father, Mandlakhe Ngubane, said the incident was a wake-up call for him not to waste his life. "He was very smart. He is naturally a smart person. I sent him to a Muslim school in Johannesburg, but he was expelled in Grade 11 because of the drugs he was smoking." Mandlakhe said that while Fezile finished his matric, he could never shake off the drugs, which eventually destroyed his potential. The main suspect in Mongale's murder was killed during a shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal last week, while a second suspect is still on the run.
