Arrest over child killed by car on Kendal sports pitch
A man is being questioned over the death of one child and injuries to another who were hit by a car which crashed through a fence and on to a sports pitch.The pair were struck at Kendal rugby club at about 17:00 GMT on Wednesday, Cumbria Police said.The male driver, who is aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.Tim Farron, the MP for the area, described the crash as "devastating, utterly heartbreaking news", adding: "Our community in Kendal is stunned and in mourning."
There was a police presence at the rugby club into the night, with officers saying the car involved was a black BMW i40.
The Reverend Canon Shanthi Thompson, from Kendal Parish Church, said a moment of silence was held after its Ash Wednesday service "because it's so hard to find the words to say at a time like this"."Kendal is a very close community and many, many people will have links to the rugby club and people will know the children involved," she told BBC Radio Cumbria.

Five feared killed in horror school shooting as armed police swarm scene
Elite armed police have raced to a school in Graz, Austria's second largest city, after a gunman opened fire in broad daylight. The BORG Dreierschützengasse school is being evacuated with officers swarming the scene. Austrian special task force Cobra has also been deployed to the horror incident, which unfolded at about 10am local time. There are fears as many as five people may have been killed and multiple people injured, according to local media, and a police spokesperson believes the shooter may be a pupil at the school. Students and teachers are believed to be among the victims. Federal police have been deployed to the scene, according to local reports. Cobra units - armed special forces part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior - have rushed to a community administered hospital nearby the shooting site. At keast five people may have died following the school shooting this morning. Police rushed to the scene at around 10am local time (9am GMT) this morning, in the Dreierschützengasse neighborhood, with a local spokesperson telling national broadcaster ORF early on that one person may have died. Fritz Grundnig said one person "possibly also dead" following the shooting. A welfare hub in a rural holiday hotspot will open throughout the summer in a bid to keep women and girls Police runs the facility at Bowness, in the Lake District, on Saturday evenings which have become busy nights for locals and visitors."It's not about frightening people, but we want to get that early message out to look out for each other, don't get separated from friends, be alert to the fact that spiking might happen," Sgt Becky Hunter welfare hub hands out purse bells to prevent theft, personal attack alarms, portable torches and anti-spiking kits which are used to prevent people putting substances into another person's drink without their knowledge. Sgt Hunter said there were benefits to the "buoyant" night-time economy - which boomed in the area when staycations became more popular during the Covid-19 pandemic - but there was also potential for issues when people consumed alcohol."Dealing with violence against women and girls, that's one of our priorities for Bowness and across Westmorland and Furness," she said. The hub also looks out for potential victims of domestic Hunter said: "This is a big tourist area, we attract couples and families from all around the country. "Some individuals will come along and under the influence of alcohol that can exacerbate problems they may be having at home and we see some of the fallout in Bowness."She added domestic violence could impact both men and women and the force was striving to look after any potential victims.
