Treadwell 'soaking up everything' before Ulster departure

BBC News18-04-2025

Ulster lock Kieran Treadwell says he is "soaking up everything" in his last few months at the province.Treadwell, who joined Ulster in 2016 from Harlequins, will return to his former side at the end of the season. And the 29-year-old wants to savour his last few games in an Ulster jersey and inspire the province to a strong end to the season."You soak everything in, after Bordeaux I was like 'wow this is my last European game for Ulster,'" he told BBC Sport NI."I'm soaking up everything; the environment, the boys, the wins, the losses and the work we're doing on the training pitch."Treadwell said that the mood in camp is "good" despite their 43-31 defeat against Bordeaux in the last-16 stage of the Investec Champions Cup last time out."We still have disappointment from Bordeaux, we felt like we actually could have put a few more shots together and scored a few more tries," he added."I think we are going in the right direction, stringing some good play together, and defensively we are making strides, so hopefully that can snowball into this week."They face another tough assessment in the United Rugby Championship on Saturday as they face Leinster at the Aviva Stadium, but Treadwell, who starts the game on the bench, believes his side should look forward to the challenge."It's a different challenge and they pose different threats, but it is going to be a massive game, these games leading in are really important as the table is really tight and it's effectively play-off rugby now," he continued."I'd say they're one of the best, but most of the focus this week is going to be on us and how we can learn from Bordeaux."It's an occasion in a massive stadium and something we can be excited for but that we can't let get the better of us."

Arsenal deal for Viktor Gyokeres at risk as Sporting issue threat

Arsenal's deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres could be at risk as Sporting CP have threatened to increase the striker's asking price. Earlier this week, Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, hit out at Gyokeres' agent over suggestions that a transfer fee had already been agreed ahead of the summer transfer window. Gyokeres has a €100 million (£85.1m) release clause in his contract but Sporting have been willing to sell the Sweden international for lower than that amount. Varandas was angered by claims that Sporting have agreed to sell Gyokeres for €60m (£51m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons and warned the striker's representative, Hasan Cetinkaya, that he is 'making the situation worse'. During his negotiations to bring Gyokeres to Sporting in a £20m deal from Coventry City two years ago, Cetinkaya secured an exclusive sales mandate which means that the Portuguese champions will have to pay the agent 10 per cent of the value of any rejected offer above €60m (£51m). It is understood that if Cetinkaya decides to activate that mandate this summer, Sporting will respond by demanding that Gyokeres' €100m (£85.1m) release clause is paid in full. Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with his counterpart at Sporting, Bernardo Palmeiro, in Menorca to discuss a deal for Gyokeres this week. Arsenal's initial proposal worth an €55m (£46.8m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons was rejected but an improved offer is expected. Sporting are believed to be holding out for a deal worth closer to €80m (£68.1m) including add-ons. More Trending Reports in Portugal on Thursday claimed that there is a 'growing optimism' in Gyokeres' camp that a deal can be agreed between Arsenal and Sporting. Manchester United also remain in the race to sign Gyokeres and are hoping his strong relationship with Ruben Amorim can overcome the striker's reservations about the lack of European football at Old Trafford next season. United have indicated to Sporting that they are willing to pay €60m (£51.1m) up front, plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in performance-related bonuses. Gyokeres, who finished the season with 54 goals in 52 games and helped Sporting win the domestic double in Portugal, issued a cryptic message on Instagram on Thursday which read: 'There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Former Northern Ireland star thrilled to take reins of St Johnstone Under-19s

Griffin, who earned 29 caps, progressed through the Saints academy after arriving in Perth from Belfast as a 15-year-old in 1994. He made more than 120 appearances for the club, as well as earning international recognition. Griffin captained Saints at the age of just 18 and was involved in memorable European games against VPS Vaasa and Monaco. The 47-year-old, who officially begins his new role on Monday, has been football co-ordinator with Saints in the Community. 'This is a chance that I have always really wanted, and it is a great opportunity for me,' he told club media. 'I started here as a 15-year-old wanting to become a footballer. I lived my dream through this football club. 'Now being able to help other youngsters try to live that same dream is going to be very special. Pre-season is just around the corner so it is an exciting time. I like to think I've learned a lot over the years in football — and sometimes learned the hard way. I have experience to pass on to these guys. 'I'll need them all to work hard. It's down to them how far they want to go. But I'll certainly be doing my very best to help them every step of the way. 'This football club has a reputation of bringing talented kids through the academy — there is no reason we can't keep doing it. I have worked with the St Johnstone Community Trust for a long time now, starting with Atholl Henderson. It has been a great time. 'A big thank you goes to everyone at the trust and to all the kids and parents who I have had the pleasure of dealing with over the years.' Griffin's career included spells with Dundee United, Stockport County and Livingston before finishing his playing days at Arbroath. He made his Northern Ireland debut against Germany aged 18 in 1996 and also scored a famous winner against the Republic of Ireland at Lansdowne Road in 1999. He is among the players featured in a new mural celebrating Northern Ireland's top players throughout its footballing history. Situated in Battenburg Street off the Shankill Road, the mural features 14 of the region's most acclaimed players, including another former Saints player, George O'Boyle. Funds towards the artwork were gathered by Northern Ireland football supporters' clubs across the Greater Shankill area.
