Old clip falsely shared as senior Kenyan politician threatening to expose president
In a move to fortify the ruling coalition ahead of Kenya's 2027 general election, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi's Amani National Congress (ANC) party was recently merged with President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA). A post shared on TikTok claims to show Mudavadi threatening to resign and expose alleged crimes by Ruto, implying the two leaders have fallen out. The claim is false; the video is from a public address in 2020 when Mudavadi spoke about former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko's impeachment.

'How did we get to the situation where there's impeachment in Nairobi? Let us speak the truth...It's because of impunity. Because you don't want to follow the law. We need leaders who can know and appreciate the rule of the law,' Mudavadi says in the clip.
'If we continue making the mistake and saying that now because I'm popular in the streets of Nairobi for this week, then I can disregard the law of the land, then I'm the one who is planting the seed of impeachment. When you're a governor somewhere, it is not personal property. It is a public office,' he adds.
He goes on to stress that leaders at all levels of society must conduct their activities in accordance with the law, regardless of their position. At the end of the clip, he notes that some leaders are afraid of speaking the truth because they fear social media backlash.
Mudavadi was appointed as the Prime Cabinet Secretary on 27 September 2022, becoming the most senior leader after the president and his deputy (archived here). He doubles as Foreign and Diaspora Affairs cabinet secretary (archived here).
He also assumed interim charge of the public service ministry following the exit of Justin Muturi in April 2025 (archived here).

The video, however, does not show him saying he is ready to resign or threatening to divulge secrets about Ruto.

AFP Fact Check conducted reverse image searches on keyframes from the video and discovered the false clip was created by splicing two different versions of footage from the same event.
One segment was published on the YouTube channel of Kenyan news outlet NTV on December 14, 2020 (archived here).
'Nairobi is not a private property, Mudavadi tells Sonko,' reads the video's title.
At the time, Mudavadi was addressing congregants at the Friends Church Quakers in Nairobi during the Covid-19 pandemic, where he spoke about the impeachment of the city's ex-governor Sonko and his subsequent removal from office.
He did not mention Ruto in the footage uploaded to YouTube by NTV.
Comparisons show Mudavadi in the same blazer and grey shirt, with blue, yellow and white drapes in the background.

A longer version of the address, part of which appears two minutes and fifty seconds into the TikTok video, was published on YouTube by social media news channel Mutembei TV on December 15, 2020 (archived here).

AFP Fact Check did not find any credible reports suggesting a rift between Mudavadi and Ruto.
In March 2025, the Mudavadi-led ANC party was officially dissolved and merged with Ruto's UDA to solidify Mudavadi's position in the Kenya Kwanza ruling coalition (archived here).
Additionally, Mudavadi's office issued a statement on April 6, 2025, dismissing claims that he was planning to part ways with Ruto (archived here).

Investigators say that the material Farber possessed included children under the age of five and the images and videos showed explicit abuse. The nature of the content could bring on enhanced penalties, according to HCSO. Australian murder suspect says lethal lunch may have contained 'foraged' mushrooms
An Australian woman accused of murdering three people by lacing their lunch with toxic mushrooms told a court on Wednesday she may have unwittingly used "foraged" fungi in the dish. Erin Patterson is charged with murdering her estranged husband's parents and aunt in 2023 by spiking their beef Wellington lunch with lethal death cap mushrooms. She is also accused of attempting to murder a fourth guest -- her husband's uncle -- who survived after a long stay in hospital. Patterson maintains the lunch was poisoned by accident, pleading not guilty to all charges in a case that continues to grip Australia. The 50-year-old choked up with emotion as she gave her account of the meal on Wednesday. She said she decided to improve the beef-and-pastry dish with dried mushrooms after deciding it tasted a "little bland". While she initially believed a kitchen container held store-bought mushrooms, she said it may have been mixed with foraged fungi. "I decided to put in the dried mushrooms I brought from the grocer," she told the court. "Now I think that there was a possibility that there were foraged ones in there as well." Patterson earlier told the court how she had started foraging for mushrooms during a Covid lockdown in 2020. She also told the court on Wednesday that she had misled her guests about the purpose of the family meal. While they ate, Patterson revealed she might be receiving treatment for cancer in the coming weeks. But this was a lie, Patterson said. - 'Shouldn't have lied' - "I was planning to have gastric bypass surgery, so I remember thinking I didn't want to tell anybody what I was going to have done. "I was really embarrassed about it. "So letting them believe I had some serious issue that needed treatment might mean they could help me with the logistics around the kids," she told the court. "I shouldn't have lied to them," she added. The prosecution alleges Patterson deliberately poisoned her lunch guests and took care that she did not consume the deadly mushrooms herself. Her defence says Patterson ate the same meal as the others but did not fall as sick. Patterson asked her estranged husband Simon to the family lunch at her secluded rural Victoria home in July 2023. Simon turned down the invitation because he felt too uncomfortable, the court has heard previously. The pair were long estranged but still legally married. Simon's parents Don and Gail were happy to attend, dying days after eating the home-cooked meal. Simon's aunt Heather Wilkinson also died, while her husband Ian fell seriously ill but later recovered. The trial is expected to last another week. lec/sft/sco
