Cleveland Police investigation into human trafficking from Brazil to Teesside
Five people have been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged human sex trafficking on Teesside.Cleveland Police said it had carried out a year-long inquiry into "vulnerable people" being moved from Brazil to Middlesbrough and Hartlepool.Det Sgt John Bentley said women were allegedly being brought into the UK "for use in the adult sexual services industry, mainly online".Four men, aged 25, 29, 39 and 40, and a 41-year-old woman, were arrested during raids on suspicion of human trafficking and forced labour offences.
Those arrested have been released on bail as the investigation continues.Cleveland Police said it had been in contact with more than 10 potential victims and they were taken into protection.Det Sgt Bentley said the force had uncovered a suspected "international human trafficking organisation", operating in the Cleveland Police area and nationally."A member of the public was concerned about the comings and goings at a certain address and spoke to the local neighbourhood police," he added."They came out and established that something was amiss and they came to us - we have a specialised team of detectives."
'National problem'
He explained that conditions in properties varied but those inside "will not leave them because of threats and coercion".Victims are often debt-bonded after entering into an agreement but "the debt is never repaid", he said.Officers secured three Slavery and Trafficking Orders, which are civil orders used to protect vulnerable people from criminal exploitation and deter future offending.Det Sgt Bentley described modern slavery as a "national problem" but ruled out the North East being a hotspot.Yasmin Khan, director of the Halo project, which supports vulnerable women, said it had supported multiple victims of trafficking so far this year."We must do more to raise awareness and provide the much needed care and support to our victims," she said."However, we must work relentlessly to bring organised gangs and perpetrators to account and ensure evidence can lead to prosecutions."

Dearing has seemingly backed Ventura's claims, describing in the interview how she was like 'a drone' during the parties, which the former escort says took place at both the Beverly Hills Hotel and a private condo on Los Angeles' famed Sunset Blvd. He said that although Combs 'never touched me', he and Ventura engaged in sexual activity 'under his direction'. He claimed Ventura refused to speak when the rapper would leave the room, alleging how he when he once tried to ask her question, the singer replied: 'No, no, no. Not until he gets back.' The model suggested Ventura did not want to participate in the freak-offs, claiming that her demeanor would change when the sessions turned 'dark'. 'You could see that it was kind of like the spirit was leaving the body,' he told People. Dearing also claimed there was a 'knowing and understanding' that Ventura would face 'consequences' if she did follow Diddy's orders - but also admitted he did not know what those consequences were. Ventura didn't deny that, but she said that love, along with her reputation and career, was also a chip the rap mogul played to control her and force her into freak-offs against her will. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to five counts including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan say Combs over two decades coerced women, including Ventura, to take part in drug-fueled sexual performances with male sex workers known as 'Freak Offs.' The trial is in its fourth week. Combs' lawyers have acknowledged he was at times abusive in domestic relationships, but argue that women who took part in 'Freak Offs' did so consensually.

A fashion designer who accused Sean ' Diddy ' Combs of groping her and dangling her over the edge of a 17th-story balcony is set to take the stand in his federal sex trafficking trial as early as today. Bryana 'Bana' Bongolan sued the rap mogul for $10million last year, accusing him of sexual battery and physical abuse. Bongolan's lawsuit claimed Combs molested and attacked her at Cassie Ventura 's Los Angeles apartment in 2016 after one of his notorious 'freak off' parties. The fashionista claims the alleged balcony assault - which Combs denies - followed a pattern of threats and abuse. Ventura heard the commotion, came out of her locked bedroom and screamed at Diddy to stop. But as Ventura tried to calm him down, Combs allegedly slammed Bongolan against the balcony furniture. Ventura, who took to the witness stand last week, recounted the violence during her own testimony at Combs' trial. Diddy has denied that the incident ever took place. Bongolan met Diddy after she became close friends with Ventura in 2014 when they worked together at Diamond Supply Co, a popular skate shop in Los Angeles. She was a 'quintessential starving artist' at the time and thought meeting Diddy would lead to 'once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to collaborate'. She worked on designing the Bad Boy Entertainment jackets, album covers, music videos, and a clothing line for Ventura. But she also 'experienced violence and abuse firsthand in professional settings', including witnessing Diddy's frequent abuse of Ventura, Bongolan's lawsuit claimed. The complaint accuses Diddy of sexual battery, false imprisonment, inflicting emotional distress, and physical abuse, among other charges. Bongolan claimed the alleged balcony incident proved she 'was correct to fear Mr Combs and has resulted in deep and lasting harm', the complaint states. Diddy also threatened Bongolan directly, including threatening her life as she screamed inches from her face during a photoshoot, her lawsuit claimed. Bongolan continued to work with Ventura on her clothing lines until July 2018. They collaborated again in November and December 2023.

Boy, 4, dies after crash in Dartford - as two men arrested
A four-year-old boy has died after two pickup trucks crashed on a country lane in Kent. A 24-year-old man is also in a critical condition and a one-year-girl suffered minor injuries following the collision in Dartford on Sunday evening. Kent Police said it was called to reports of a collision involving two grey Ford Rangers on New Barn Road at around 9.30pm. The three people who were hurt were from the same vehicle, the force added. Officers arrested a 27-year-old man from Darenth and a 53-year-old man from Swanley in connection with the incident on Monday. Both remain in custody.
