Five people have been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged human sex trafficking on Teesside.Cleveland Police said it had carried out a year-long inquiry into "vulnerable people" being moved from Brazil to Middlesbrough and Hartlepool.Det Sgt John Bentley said women were allegedly being brought into the UK "for use in the adult sexual services industry, mainly online".Four men, aged 25, 29, 39 and 40, and a 41-year-old woman, were arrested during raids on suspicion of human trafficking and forced labour offences.
Those arrested have been released on bail as the investigation continues.Cleveland Police said it had been in contact with more than 10 potential victims and they were taken into protection.Det Sgt Bentley said the force had uncovered a suspected "international human trafficking organisation", operating in the Cleveland Police area and nationally."A member of the public was concerned about the comings and goings at a certain address and spoke to the local neighbourhood police," he added."They came out and established that something was amiss and they came to us - we have a specialised team of detectives."
'National problem'
He explained that conditions in properties varied but those inside "will not leave them because of threats and coercion".Victims are often debt-bonded after entering into an agreement but "the debt is never repaid", he said.Officers secured three Slavery and Trafficking Orders, which are civil orders used to protect vulnerable people from criminal exploitation and deter future offending.Det Sgt Bentley described modern slavery as a "national problem" but ruled out the North East being a hotspot.Yasmin Khan, director of the Halo project, which supports vulnerable women, said it had supported multiple victims of trafficking so far this year."We must do more to raise awareness and provide the much needed care and support to our victims," she said."However, we must work relentlessly to bring organised gangs and perpetrators to account and ensure evidence can lead to prosecutions."

Diddy escort who was named at trial breaks silence to share harrowing details of Cassie's freak-off claims

A former escort forced to have sex with Cassie Ventura at Diddy's notorious freak-off parties has broken his silence to give 'some credence' to her testimony. Ventura took the stand as a star witness in Sean ' Diddy ' Combs' sex trafficking trial, breaking down in tears as she told how she was forced to participate in elaborately choreographed sex marathons that routinely involved male escorts. Shawn Dearing was among the more than 10 men hired to perform at Diddy's parties, it was revealed during the R&B singer's testimony. Dearing, known professionally as 'Skyler', never intended to share this story, but has decided to speak out now that his photo and alias have been made public. He claims he was hired for 'more than a dozen' sex sessions with Ventura and Combs after having met the couple in late 2014 or early 2015. Dearing, in an interview with People Magazine, revealed that although he never saw Combs physically abuse Ventura, he allegedly witnessed 'psychological' abuse and could tell the singer was 'there under Diddy's control'. 'We did everything under his direction,' he said of the freak-offs, adding there was a 'constant energy of knowing that we must perform for him or else'. Dearing, 37, hailed Ventura - who accuses Combs of harrowing abuse, coercion and rape - as 'uplifting' and a 'bad*** lady' who was 'genuine throughout the whole experience'. Dearing's involvement in the freak-offs was made public during Ventura's testimony last month. She told the court that Dearing, whom she knew as Skyler, was one of several males escorts that she hired through the website Cowboys4Angels. The R&B singer, 38, also testified that 'I had to do 'Freak Offs'', alleging she did not want to participate in the sex parties. Dearing has seemingly backed Ventura's claims, describing in the interview how she was like 'a drone' during the parties, which the former escort says took place at both the Beverly Hills Hotel and a private condo on Los Angeles' famed Sunset Blvd. He said that although Combs 'never touched me', he and Ventura engaged in sexual activity 'under his direction'. He claimed Ventura refused to speak when the rapper would leave the room, alleging how he when he once tried to ask her question, the singer replied: 'No, no, no. Not until he gets back.' The model suggested Ventura did not want to participate in the freak-offs, claiming that her demeanor would change when the sessions turned 'dark'. 'You could see that it was kind of like the spirit was leaving the body,' he told People. Dearing also claimed there was a 'knowing and understanding' that Ventura would face 'consequences' if she did follow Diddy's orders - but also admitted he did not know what those consequences were. He added that 'I what's best for [Ventura]' and 'I want her respect first and foremost'. Ventura remained largely composed during her testimony, but at times openly wept as she recounted degrading sex parties she said Combs coerced her into for years, at times weekly. Combs would direct her to take drugs before the sex marathons, Ventura told the court. She claimed the drugs were a 'buffer' to withstand the 'humiliating' and often-filmed sexual encounters. The jury was repeatedly shown disturbing surveillance footage of Combs brutally beating and dragging Ventura, which she alleged was a regular experience. The defense acknowledged violence played a role in the relationship but said both of them were party to it. They showed jurors reams of text messages in a bid to cast Ventura as a willing participant in the freak-offs. Their relationship was tumultuous and had toxic qualities, the defense admitted, but they showed loving - and sexually graphic - texts to indicate that it was still based on a foundation of love. Ventura didn't deny that, but she said that love, along with her reputation and career, was also a chip the rap mogul played to control her and force her into freak-offs against her will. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to five counts including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan say Combs over two decades coerced women, including Ventura, to take part in drug-fueled sexual performances with male sex workers known as 'Freak Offs.' The trial is in its fourth week. Combs' lawyers have acknowledged he was at times abusive in domestic relationships, but argue that women who took part in 'Freak Offs' did so consensually.

Who is Bryana 'Bana' Bongolan? Fashion designer who claims Diddy dangled her over 17th-story balcony

A fashion designer who accused Sean ' Diddy ' Combs of groping her and dangling her over the edge of a 17th-story balcony is set to take the stand in his federal sex trafficking trial as early as today. Bryana 'Bana' Bongolan sued the rap mogul for $10million last year, accusing him of sexual battery and physical abuse. Bongolan's lawsuit claimed Combs molested and attacked her at Cassie Ventura 's Los Angeles apartment in 2016 after one of his notorious 'freak off' parties. The fashionista claims the alleged balcony assault - which Combs denies - followed a pattern of threats and abuse. She claimed Diddy force-fed her ecstasy and during a photoshoot told her 'I'm the mother******g devil. I could kill you'. Bongolan's lawsuit further included stories she heard while working with Combs, including that he threatened to blow up rapper Kid Cudi 's car after he slept with Ventura. Her complaint also featured a rumor that Diddy previously 'skinned a rival's dog', although she admitted she did not know if there was any truth to the story. Bongolan could take the witness stand as early as Tuesday, with prosecutors hoping it will reinforce their claim Diddy controlled women through use of intimidation, drugs, and violence. Bongolan alleged she suffered a near-death experience on September 26, 2016, after one of the rapper's sex marathons. She was not involved in the freak off party that allegedly happened just before the incident, her complaint states. Bongolan and her then-girlfriend were sleeping in a bedroom of Ventura's apartment when an intoxicated Diddy stormed in after 'violently' banging on the door, the lawsuit alleges. She allegedly hid on the balcony, only for Combs to storm over to her, roughly grab her and grope her breasts as she tried to fight him off and tell him to leave, she claimed. He held her over the edge of the balcony under her arms and lifted her on to the banister, while screaming, 'Do you know what the f*** you did?' over and over, the lawsuit claimed. Ventura heard the commotion, came out of her locked bedroom and screamed at Diddy to stop. But as Ventura tried to calm him down, Combs allegedly slammed Bongolan against the balcony furniture. Ventura, who took to the witness stand last week, recounted the violence during her own testimony at Combs' trial. Diddy has denied that the incident ever took place. Bongolan met Diddy after she became close friends with Ventura in 2014 when they worked together at Diamond Supply Co, a popular skate shop in Los Angeles. She was a 'quintessential starving artist' at the time and thought meeting Diddy would lead to 'once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to collaborate'. She worked on designing the Bad Boy Entertainment jackets, album covers, music videos, and a clothing line for Ventura. But she also 'experienced violence and abuse firsthand in professional settings', including witnessing Diddy's frequent abuse of Ventura, Bongolan's lawsuit claimed. The complaint accuses Diddy of sexual battery, false imprisonment, inflicting emotional distress, and physical abuse, among other charges. Bongolan claimed the alleged balcony incident proved she 'was correct to fear Mr Combs and has resulted in deep and lasting harm', the complaint states. Diddy also threatened Bongolan directly, including threatening her life as she screamed inches from her face during a photoshoot, her lawsuit claimed. Bongolan claimed that she took the threat seriously due to the 'disturbing' abuse she saw him inflict on Ventura Bongolan met Diddy after she became close friends with Ventura in 2014 when they worked together at Diamond Supply Co, a popular skate shop in Los Angeles. She then worked on designing the Bad Boy Entertainment jackets, album covers, music videos, and a clothing line for Ventura. In one fight Bongolan claimed to witness, Diddy 'threw a large kitchen knife at Ms Ventura, who, acting in self-defense, threw one back at him'. Bongolan continued to work with Ventura on her clothing lines until July 2018. They collaborated again in November and December 2023.
