Resign as minister too, Akmal tells Zafrul
KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz should also resign as a minister following his resignation from Umno, says Datuk Dr Akmal Salleh.
The Umno youth chief said party members were overjoyed by the news and claimed that his membership was uninvited.
"He should have resigned from his ministerial post as well.
"And to PKR, I hope you can accept Tengku Zafrul as a member to prove how 'loyal' you are in your friendship with Umno.
"Umno members are overjoyed by this news. He came uninvited, and his departure is not mourned. Umno is a party for all of us," he said in a Facebook post.
Earlier today, Zafrul announced that he submitted his resignation from all posts in Umno, along with his membership in the party.
The investment, trade and industry minister said he had also expressed his intention to join PKR.
He said after much self-reflection and consideration of various factors, he has decided to do so due to "compatibility and suitability."
Tengku Zafrul is serving his second term in the Dewan Negara.

Dr M to launch big umbrella to 'save Malays'
Summary Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad is forming a Malay secretariat committee as a "big umbrella" to "save the Malays" by addressing issues affecting the community. The committee aims to return Malay-led government by focusing on Malay issues. PN is involved, but he claims it is non-partisan and that Umno is also free to join. In yet another bid to 'save the Malays' through returning political dominance, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday announced the formation of a Malay secretariat committee as a 'big umbrella' for the community. This follows a meeting with several political leaders - including from Perikatan Nasional - to discuss the secretariat. Among those present were PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin, and PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man. Mahathir said the committee would serve as a platform to address issues affecting the Malay community that the current government had failed to resolve. 'We have agreed to focus on Malay issues—not party matters, but issues that concern all Malays. 'They (Malays) need fighters to champion their cause. Right now, they don't have a dedicated fighter. We're not concerned with other problems, we just want to focus on one struggle—the struggle to save the Malays,' he said during a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya. 'We know there are many problems faced by the Malays, and they can only be resolved if the government is once again led by Malays. That is why our struggle is to find a way to return to power, so we can address the problems faced by the Malays. 'We have agreed to form an informal movement, which we are calling the 'big umbrella', so that all Malays can be part of one group,' said the soon-to-be centenarian. When asked whether the movement would involve Umno, the main Malay-based party, Mahathir, who since his exit had led two splinter parties - Bersatu and Pejuang - said he was open to Umno members joining the struggle. 'Even if they are Umno members, if they agree with our cause, we will accept them,' he said.

Sabah Umno must accept reality
Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Nizam said Umno still cannot accept the fact that within a coalition of political parties, the party with the highest number of seats has the priority to lead the coalition. TAWAU: Sabah Umno needs to accept the reality that it is no longer the political 'big brother' as it continues to lose support both nationally and in Sabah where the people are tired of the same old script, said Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Information Chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. He said the current Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government has chosen to look forward by forging a strategic partnership with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to ensure post-GE15 stability and in preparation for the 17th State Election (PRN17). 'Ultimately, real power does not lie in the hands of any individual, party, or propaganda — but in the hands of the people… Let the people of Sabah judge who is truly working and who is merely acting,' he said, in a statement, Wednesday. The Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister said he read with interest the remarks by Kota Kinabalu Umno Division Chief and Umno Women's Exco member Musliati Moslimin, who claimed that Umno is not a 'political tool,' not a 'script filler' and not a 'buyer of false promises.' Ironically, he said, such statements come from a party with a long history of writing political scripts full of loopholes — including in Sabah. Nizam said during the 2020 Sabah state election, history clearly showed who actually violated agreements and moral principles when, just two days before nomination day, Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) had agreed to contest 27 seats. 'However, when the time came, they contested 41 seats, which was not only a breach of understanding but also caused confusion and early cracks in the coalition. 'If they want to talk about 'dignity' and 'betrayal,' Umno should first reflect on its own historical record,' he said. Nizam, also Apas Assemblyman, said Umno still cannot accept the fact that within a coalition of political parties, the party with the highest number of seats has the priority to lead the coalition. He said GRS, which Musliati labelled as a coalition of 'splinter parties,' managed to secure the highest number of seats and therefore had the right to choose the Sabah Chief Minister—something that is not a betrayal, but the foundation of real democracy. 'Even more surprising is that Musliati did not mention the 'Kinabalu Move' incident in January 2023, when several Umno leaders, including Datuk Bung Moktar Radin, were involved in an attempt to overthrow the existing government,' he said. According to him, the actions of Bung and several other Umno leaders not only threatened the State's stability but also gambled with the people's mandate. Therefore, he said, their removal from the State Cabinet and positions in agencies was the Chief Minister's prerogative in order to safeguard the State's stability and interests. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Anwar congratulates S. Korea president on election win
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his warmest congratulations to Lee Jae-myung on his election as the president of South Korea. He said the victory marked a turning point for South Korea, a nation that had emerged from a period of intense contest and scrutiny with resilience and democratic resolve. 'The people have spoken for renewal of trust, of institutions and of national purpose. 'I welcome the opportunity to work with President Lee to deepen the friendship between our nations in trade and technology and in peace and security, as well as the enduring ties between our peoples,' Anwar said in a Facebook post yesterday. Malaysia–South Korea relations were elevated to a strategic partnership in November last year, a milestone reflecting shared ambitions. Anwar said Malaysia, as Chair of Asean for 2025, hoped the regional bloc would play a greater role in South Korea's regional outlook, Bernama reported. South Korea currently chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec). 'As Chairs of Asean and Apec in 2025 respectively, Malaysia and South Korea are well placed to lead impactful regional initiatives. 'In a time of global flux, a deeper partnership between South-East Asia and South Korea will be indispensable to us all,' Anwar said. He also wished Lee wisdom and success in the journey ahead. He said he looked forward to meeting Lee in Kuala Lumpur this October for the Asean Summit and again in Gyeongju, South Korea, for the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting later that month. Lee officially began his five-year term yesterday after the National Election Commission confirmed his victory during a plenary session. The liberal Democratic Party candidate won with 49.42% of the vote, defeating Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party, who garnered 41.15%.
