Want to avoid a yolky mess when hard-boiling eggs? Try dropping them in sideways. Experiments with over 200 eggs reveal they're less likely to crack when falling on their side, potentially preventing those stray fissures that release egg white into the boiling water.
While this might not revolutionise your morning scramble – cracking an egg around the middle remains the best way to access the yolk – it could offer a helpful tip for smoother hard-boiled eggs.
It's often assumed that eggs are strongest at their ends, mimicking how they're packaged. The rounded bottom is thought to deflect impact. However, compression tests show eggs crack under the same force whether squeezed from the ends or the sides. Hundreds of eggs were used to reveal the findings (Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. 'The fun started when we thought we would get one result and then we saw another,' said Hudson Borja da Rocha with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who helped run the experiments.
The researchers also ran simulations and dropped eggs horizontally and vertically from three short heights up to 0.4 inches (10 millimeters).
The egg result? The ones dropped horizontally cracked less .
'The common sense is that the egg in the vertical direction is stronger than if you lay the egg down. But they proved that's not the case,' said materials scientist Marc Meyers with the University of California, San Diego who was not involved with the new study. Scientists found that the egg's equator was more flexible and absorbed more of the energy of the fall before cracking. The findings were published Thursday in the journal Communications Physics.
Eggs are also usually nestled top-down into homemade contraptions for egg drop challenges as part of school STEM projects, which partially inspired the new study. It's not yet clear whether the new results will help protect these vulnerable eggs, which are dropped at much loftier heights.
It's a bit counterintuitive that the oblong side of an egg could hold up better against a tumble, said study co-author Tal Cohen with Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Countless broken eggs show 'the courage to go and challenge these very common, accepted notions,' Cohen said.

Invasive bullfrogs ‘eat everything' — including turtles — at Yosemite, study says
A study has found that removing invasive bullfrogs from Yosemite National Park ponds has generated a resurgence in the population of native pond turtles, experts said. When University of California, Davis, researchers first began studying four ponds at the park, they were overwhelmed by non-native American bullfrogs, a news release said. 'At night, you could look out over the pond and see a constellation of eyes blinking back at you,' said Sidney Woodruff, a UC Davis Ph.D. candidate and lead author of the study. 'Their honking noise is iconic, and it drowns out native species' calls.' The invasive frogs had decimated the native population of northwestern pond turtles, according to the study, published in the May issue of the journal Biological Conservation. Together with the southwestern pond turtle, northwestern pond turtles are the only native freshwater turtles in California, the university said. Northwestern pond turtles have vanished from over half their range, which stretches from Baja California to Washington state. At Yosemite, the only surviving turtles in the ponds surveyed were the ones that were too big for bullfrogs to eat, the study found. American bullfrogs are native to the eastern United States but don't belong in the West. 'One reason American bullfrogs are among the top worst globally introduced pests is because they eat everything — anything that fits into their mouth,' said senior author Brian Todd, a UC Davis professor in the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology. 'They've been causing declines to native species everywhere they're introduced, which is around the world.' The bullfrogs were introduced to Yosemite National Park in the 1950s and quickly spread throughout the park, researchers said. While their arrival was believed to be linked to the decline in pond turtles, it wasn't confirmed until the study took place, according to researchers. Between 2016 and 2022, researchers monitored four ponds at Yosemite, two with bullfrogs and two without, the study said. Turtles were 2 to 100 times more prevalent at the ponds where bullfrogs were absent, researchers said. When bullfrogs were removed from the other two ponds in 2019, researchers found juvenile pond turtles in them for the first time, the study said. 'As bullfrog presence declined, we started to hear other native frogs call and see native salamanders walking around,' Woodruff said. 'It's nice to be able to go back to these sites and hear a chorus of native frogs calling again that previously would not have been heard.' The Western Pond Turtle Range-wide Conservation Coalition, Yosemite Conservancy, U.S. Geological Survey and USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture funded the study.

Still Not Feeling the Same After COVID-19? You're Not Alone
Credit - Getty Images Most people have put the COVID-19 pandemic behind them. Infections, vaccinations, or a combination of both have bolstered people's immunity, and while new variants continue to pop up, getting sick does not induce the same panic it once did. But a new study shows that recovery from COVID-19 might not be as quick or straightforward as most of us now expect. The study, published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases, found that on average, it takes many people up to three months to return to good physical health after a COVID-19 infection, and nine months to recover good mental well-being. For up to 20% of infected people who were analyzed in the study, this mental-health recovery took even longer: up to a year or more. Lauren Wisk, assistant professor in the division of general internal medicine and health services research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles, and her team looked at data from people who had COVID-19 at eight health facilities across the U.S. from Dec. 2020 to Aug. 2022. People were asked to fill out surveys every three months for one year about their recovery, recording physical and mental symptoms like anxiety, depression, fatigue, social participation, sleep disturbances, and pain. It took people far longer to regain their mental well-being than it did their physical health. 'To be totally honest, we didn't necessarily expect to see different recovery trajectories as big as the ones we are seeing,' says Wisk. 'While it makes sense that some people recover faster physically, and other people recover faster mentally, on average the difference that we saw was surprising.' Read More: You Could Have Long COVID and Not Even Know It Wisk and her team also asked people to self-report if they experienced Long COVID, meaning symptoms stemming from their infection that lingered for at least three months. Nearly half of people who reported both poor physical and mental qualify of life following their infections also believed they had Long COVID. While the assessment was subjective, it tracked with the data Wisk's team collected; among people who reported just poor physical health, poor mental health, or neither, there were fewer reports of Long COVID. The findings point to the need for a deeper understanding of how COVID-19 infections affect the body, physically and mentally, in the short and long term, says Wisk. 'We need to be thinking about a longer road to recovery for people, because even if someone recovers physically from their symptoms, it might not end there for them.' Appreciating these longer lasting effects could help people seek treatment for their symptoms, which may condense their recovery period. Wisk says that short courses of anxiety medications and sleep therapies, for example, could address some of the lingering effects of COVID-19. 'We know how to treat the initial infection and how to keep people alive, but we don't have a great treatment protocol for the after effects and the lingering symptoms,' says Wisk. 'These data should help to guide development of protocols in which we think of recovery over a potentially long time horizon before people get back to normal.' Contact us at letters@

Solstices brought Mayan communities together, using monuments shaped by science and religion – and kingly ambitions, too

Gerardo Aldana, University of California, Santa Barbara (THE CONVERSATION) K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil knew his history. For 11 generations, the Mayan ruler's dynasty had ruled Copan, a city-state near today's border between Honduras and Guatemala. From the fifth century C.E. into the seventh century, scribes painted his ancestors' genealogies into manuscripts and carved them in stone monuments throughout the city. Around 650, one particular piece of architectural history appears to have caught his eye. Centuries before, village masons built special structures for public ceremonies to view the Sun – ceremonies that were temporally anchored to the solstices, like the one that will occur June 20, 2025. Building these types of architectural complexes, which archaeologists call 'E-Groups,' had largely fallen out of fashion by K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil's time. But aiming to realize his ambitious plans for his city, he seems to have found inspiration in these astronomical public spaces, as I've written about in my research on ancient Mayan hieroglyphically recorded astronomy. K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil's innovations are a reminder that science changes through discovery or invention – but also occasionally for personal or political purposes, particularly in the ancient world. E-Groups were first constructed in the Mayan region as early as 1000 B.C.E. The site of Ceibal, on the banks of the Pasión River in central Guatemala, is one such example. There, residents built a long, plastered platform bordering the eastern edge of a large plaza. Three structures were arranged along a north-south axis atop this platform, with roofs tall enough to rise above the rainforest floral canopy. Within the center of the plaza, to the west of the platform, they built a radially symmetric pyramid. From there, observers could follow sunrise behind and between the structures on the platform over the course of the year. At one level, the earliest E-Group complexes served very practical purposes. In Preclassic villages where these complexes have been found, like Ceibal, populations of several hundred to a few thousand lived on 'milpa' or 'slash-and-burn' farming techniques practices still maintained in pueblos throughout Mesoamerica today. Farmers chop down brush vegetation, then burn it to fertilize the soil. This requires careful attention to the rainy season, which was tracked in ancient times by following the position of the rising Sun at the horizon. Most of the sites in the Classic Mayan heartland, however, are located in flat, forested landscapes with few notable features along the horizon. Only a green sea of the floral canopy meets the eye of an observer standing on a tall pyramid. By punctuating the horizon, the eastern structures of E-Group complexes could be used to mark the solar extremes. Sunrise behind the northernmost structure of the eastern platform would be observed on the summer solstice. Sunrise behind the southernmost structure marked the winter solstice. The equinoxes could be marked halfway between, when the Sun rose due east. Scholars are still debating key factors of these complexes, but their religious significance is well attested. Caches of finely worked jade and ritual pottery reflect a cosmology oriented around the four cardinal directions, which may have coordinated with the E-Group's division of the year. Fading knowledge K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil's citizenry, however, would have been less attuned to direct celestial observations than their ancestors. By the seventh century, Mayan political organization had changed significantly. Copan had grown to as many as 25,000 residents, and agricultural technologies also changed to keep up. Cities of the Classic period practiced multiple forms of intensive agriculture that relied on sophisticated water management strategies, buffering the need to meticulously follow the horizon movement of the Sun. E-Group complexes continued to be built into the Classic period, but they were no longer oriented to sunrise, and they served political or stylistic purposes rather than celestial views. Such a development, I think, resonates today. People pay attention to the changing of the seasons, and they know when the summer solstice occurs thanks to a calendar app on their phones. But they probably don't remember the science: how the tilt of the Earth and its path around the Sun make it appear as though the Sun itself travels north or south along the eastern horizon. United through ritual During the mid-seventh century, K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil had developed ambitious plans for his city – and astronomy provided one opportunity to help achieve them. He is known today for his extravagant burial chamber, exemplifying the success he eventually achieved. This tomb is located in the heart of a magnificent structure, fronted by the 'Hieroglyphic Stairway ': a record of his dynasty's history that is one of the largest single inscriptions in ancient history. Eying opportunities to transform Copan into a regional power, K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil looked for alliances beyond his local nobility, and he reached out to nearby villages. Over the past century, several scholars, including me, have investigated the astronomical component to his plan. It appears that K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil commissioned a set of stone monuments or 'stelae,' positioned within the city and in the foothills of the Copan Valley, which tracked the Sun along the horizon. Like E-Group complexes, these monuments engaged the public in solar observations. Taken together, the stelae created a countdown to an important calendric event, orchestrated by the Sun. Back in the 1920s, archaeologist Sylvanus Morley noted that from Stela 12, to the east of the city, one could witness the Sun set behind Stela 10, on a foothill to the west, twice each year. Half a century later, archaeoastronomer Anthony Aveni recognized that these two sunsets defined 20-day intervals relative to the equinoxes and the zenith passage of the Sun, when shadows of vertical objects disappear. Twenty days is an important interval in the Mayan calendar and corresponds to the length of a 'month' in the solar year. My own research showed that the dates on several stelae also commemorate some of these 20-day interval events. In addition, they all lead up to a once-every-20-year event called a 'katun end.' K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil celebrated this katun end, setting his plans for regional hegemony in motion at Quirigua, a growing, influential city some 30 miles away. A round altar there carries an image of him, commemorating his arrival. The hieroglyphic text tells us that K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil 'danced' at Quirigua, cementing an alliance between the two cities. In other words, K'ahk' Uti' Witz' K'awiil's 'solar stelae' did more than track the Sun. The monuments brought communities together to witness astronomical events for shared cultural and religious experiences, reaching across generations. Coming together to appreciate the natural cycles that make life on Earth possible is something that – I hope – will never fade with fashion.
