The hidden gem Peak District village that's full of tales of romance and tragedy
Walking hand in hand through a picturesque country village with a loved one is a pretty perfect way to spend Valentine's Day.
The Peak District has more than its fair share of scenic villages and towns where you can enjoy a day out or a romantic weekend away, with the likes of Bakewell and Castleton being among the most popular.
Yet venture off the beaten track to one of the national park's smaller villages and you'll discover a place full of tales of love and tragedy, set against a breathtaking backdrop.

Located just south of Eyam is the village of Stoney Middleton. It's backed by dramatic limestone cliffs, intriguingly-named Lovers Leap, giving you a hint at the romantic stories associated with the village.
In recent years Stoney Middleton has made the headlines thanks to a few famous faces that have stopped by. In 2021 Hollywood star Tom Cruise filmed scenes at nearby Dalton Quarry for the film Mission Impossible 7. Then in 2023 Liam Gallagher popped to the village's Grade II-listed chippy for a bite to eat, located inside the former Toll House.
But with Valentine's Day nearly upon us, it's the tragic love stories of this Peak District village which come into the spotlight.
Perhaps the most striking is the tale of how the cliffs came to be known as Lovers Leap. It's said that in 1762 Hannah Baddeley leapt from the outcrop after being rejected by her lover William Barnsley.
Luckily for Hannah her petticoats acted like a parachute, slowing her fall and allowing her to survive. A pub carved into the cliffs was named The Lovers Leap and today the site is occupied by Curry Cottage, an Indian restaurant where you can even book the private cave-like dining room.
Stoney Middleton also played a role in the tragic tale of the lovers Allen and Clara, who were murdered by miners at Winnats Pass near Castleton.
They were on their way to elope to Peak Forest and stayed overnight at the former Royal Oak, a historic pub in the village. But their conversations were overhead and the next day when they set off on their journey, they were intercepted at Winnats Pass where a group of miners murdered them and stole their valuables.
Although the pub is no longer there, the fish and chip shop stands opposite the site, so while you tuck into your chippy lunch you can imagine how the dramatic events unfolded.
Just north of Stoney Middleton lies the village of Eyam, infamously known for its self-isolation during the bubonic plague in 1665. The plague killed 260 people, causing heartbreak for many.
One of the most poignant tales associated with Eyam's quarantine is that of star-crossed lovers Emmott Sydall, who lived in Eyam, and Rowland Torre, a resident of Stoney Middleton, who were separated by the plague.
They would meet daily at a distance at nearby cave Cucklette Delf, but one day Emmott failed to appear, succumbing to the disease. Rowland continued to visit hoping that she would appear but once quarantine ended he learnt the heartbreaking truth.
To help visitors dive deeper into the tragic love stories of Stoney Middleton and the surrounding area, trail maps are available to purchase at The Cupola, a cafe-turned-restaurant and visitor centre which provides the perfect base for exploring Stoney Middleton.
The heritage trail maps cost £3 and visitors can choose between the 'purple walk' , a one hour and 15 minute tour of the village's key landmarks; the 'green walk', a one hour tour of Eyam; or a combined walk which takes around two hours and 15 minutes.

An afternoon of love, life and laughter was celebrated in downtown St. Catharines Saturday. Over 3,000 people tossed various bright-coloured powders at each other while dancing under an umbrella of a water sent from a St. Catharines firefighter's hose as they celebrated Holi, the festival of colours, love and spring. Kat Dodge, the recently named executive director of the Downtown St. Catharines Association, which organized the fourth annual festival, said Holi, a major Hindu festival that commemorates the eternal and divine love of the deities Radha and Krishna, as well as signifying the triumph of good over evil, is usually held in the spring. Participants at the fourth annual Holi Festival June 14 at the Meridian Centre parking lot enjoy throwing coloured powder at each other, then getting a shower from the St. Catharines Fire Department. 'We host it later so we can do it outside,' she said. 'And it is a great opportunity to showcase our downtown, encouraging people to come to other events. It's a really great way for us to encourage people to come to St. Catharines.' For the last three years it was held on St. Paul Street, but the area became overwhelmed with people and it had to find another larger location — the parking lot of the Meridian Centre. 'It has been amazing to see the people here,' said Dodge. 'We have been really happy here to see all the events and vendors. It is really quite accessible.' ‘How to Train Your Dragon' Soars to Korea Box Office Crown
DreamWorks' 'How to Train Your Dragon' topped the South Korean box office over the June 6–8 weekend, overtaking local hit 'Hi-Five' in admissions and revenue. The live action remake of the 2010 blockbuster opened to $4 million from 540,059 admissions across 1,645 screens, accounting for 35.6% of the market, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. That put it ahead of 'Hi-Five,' which drew 400,746 viewers and grossed $2.7 million in its second frame. The Korean film has now reached a cumulative total of $7.8 million with 1.15 million admissions. Helicopter carrying Hindu pilgrims crashes in India's Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, killing 7
LUCKNOW, India (AP) — A helicopter carrying Hindu pilgrims crashed on Sunday in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, killing seven people on board, officials said. The helicopter was headed to Guptkashi, a prominent Hindu pilgrimage site in the Himalayas, from Kedarnath temple town when it crashed minutes after taking off, officials said, on what should have been a 10-minute flight. Nandan Singh Rajwar, a local disaster management official, said authorities have launched a rescue and search operation following the helicopter crash. The helicopter, operated by Aryan Aviation, a private helicopter service company, went down in a forested area near the Kedarnath pilgrimage route at around 5:30 a.m. local time. Officials said the crash was believed to have been caused by poor weather conditions. Officials said the dead included the pilot and pilgrims from the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh and western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The bodies were badly burned in a fire that followed the crash, they said. India's Civil Aviation Ministry suspended the operations of Aryan Aviation and directed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to oversee all helicopter activity in the region, according to Press Trust of India. The ministry also ordered an investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, the news agency said. The crash comes three days after an Air India passenger plane crashed with the loss of at least 270 people in Gujarat state. The London-bound Boeing 787 struck a medical college hostel in a residential area of the northwestern city of Ahmedabad minutes after takeoff Thursday, killing 241 people on board and at least 29 on the ground. One passenger survived. Kedarnath is home to one of the four most sacred Hindu temple shrines and receives tens of thousands of pilgrims each year during the summer season, many of whom use helicopter services due to the difficult mountainous terrain. Helicopter mishaps are not uncommon in the treacherous Kedarnath region, where sudden weather changes and high-altitude flying conditions can pose risks. According to Press Trust, Sunday's was the fifth helicopter accident since the pilgrimage began in the region on April 30. On June 7, a helicopter operating in the Kedarnath Valley made an emergency landing on a highway due to technical fault shortly after taking off. The pilot was injured but all five passengers on board were unharmed.
