Severe Tropical Storm Wutip: Hong Kong hoists T3 storm signal
Hong Kong has raised the T3 storm signal as Severe Tropical Storm Wutip moves across the Leizhou Peninsula.
The Observatory hoisted the signal at 12:20pm, with Wutip expected to bring strong winds around the Pearl River Estuary.
'With Wutip moving further inland and weakening, local winds will moderate progressively later tomorrow [Sunday],' the Observatory said. 'Although Wutip will depart and dissipate on Monday and Tuesday, an active southwesterly airstream will bring heavy showers to the coast of Guangdong. Members of the public should stay on the alert.'
Rain is predicted for the next 10 days, with local winds expected to moderate progressively on Sunday.
Typhoon Signal 3
The No. 3 signal warns of strong winds affecting, or expected to affect, Hong Kong within 12 hours.
Classes of kindergartens and schools for children with physical or intellectual disabilities will be suspended.
Scheduled ferry services may be cancelled as conditions worsen. Bus and MTR services are not affected.
Residents should secure loose objects like flower pots or drying racks, and prepare for possible flooding in low-lying areas.
Climate crisis
Tropical cyclones – which get their energy from warm ocean water – are strengthening and become ever more destructive because of warming seas. Over 90 per cent of excess heat in the atmosphere is ending up in oceans, according to NASA, as rising greenhouse gases prevent it from escaping to space.

Another father surnamed Ma expressed excitement about receiving a special gift. "My daughter and my son-in-law got me this watch. Hong Kong people are very busy and this watch can monitor my health. I am so happy and surprised. They don't only care about what I eat, but also care a lot about my overall health," he said. Meanwhile, one child named Jimmy prepared a hand-drawn card to thank his dad for helping him with his homework. Chief Executive John Lee also paid tribute on social media, describing fathers as pillars of the family. He said that it has been difficult to spend time with his family due to his busy work schedule over the past three years, but he cherishes the moments when his grandson comes to visit and play.
