From ‘nasi lemak and durians' to global urban renewal: Malaysia to lead UN-Habitat with 193-nation backing
KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 — Malaysia is set to take a leading role in shaping the future of global cities as it prepares to assume the presidency of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) next year.
Malaysia will hold the presidency from 2025 to 2027, following unanimous support from 193 United Nations member states.
'This is the first time Malaysia has been elected to head the Executive Board of UN-Habitat,' Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming told Mingguan Malaysia in an interview published today.
'It's not easy to get support from 193 countries, but we did it,' he added.
UN-Habitat is the UN's leading agency on urban development, sustainability and housing.
As president, Malaysia will have the rare opportunity to set the agenda for global urbanisation policy and sustainable city living.
'Malaysia is not only known for nasi lemak and durians.
'We are now also recognised for good governance, transparency, and our commitment to urban transformation,' Nga was quoted as saying.
He said the appointment was a direct result of the country's improved international image under the current government.
He believes this global platform will benefit Malaysians by attracting foreign investors, technology transfers, and support for smart, sustainable development across the country.
Nga noted that many Malaysian initiatives – such as green cities, circular economy policies and low-carbon development – have drawn praise internationally.
'We have proven that even as a developing country, we can lead by example in creating sustainable, inclusive cities.'
The minister hopes Malaysia's leadership will inspire public confidence and counter local cynicism about the government's development agenda.
'It's time we stop doubting ourselves. The world believes in Malaysia – so should we,' Nga was quoted as saying.
He also used the platform to promote unity and humility in service.
'We must be humble to learn. My slogan is: the Malay child is our child, the Chinese child is our child, the Indian child is our child – and the same for Sabah and Sarawak.'

MACC says assets seized from ‘Tan Sri' in highway sukuk scandal now reach RM143m
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized assets linked to the misuse of sukuk funds of the construction of a highway in Klang Valley believed to be owned by a highway concessionaire with a Tan Sri title totalling RM143 million during an operation conducted last week. Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki said the seizures include 14 individual accounts totalling RM4.5 million, eight company accounts totalling RM33 million, luxury condominium and land worth RM24.5 million, nine cars worth RM7.65 million, and 13 cars that have yet to be handed over to the investigation team. Other items seized include luxury watches worth RM25 million, handbags worth RM3 million, jewellery and diamonds (RM6 million), four horses (RM400,000), alcoholic beverages (RM3 million), foreign assets worth more than RM15 million and around RM20 million in gambling activities. 'Preliminary investigations revealed there was misconduct between 2016 and 2020 involving approved sukuk funds of about RM1.35 billion, involving false claims of about RM360 million and RM416 million and RM50 million in other bank facility loans. 'The RM1.67 billion highway project also failed to be completed according to schedule and investigations are focused on bribes worth RM12 million paid to certain parties as inducement in helping the cash flow out and back to the suspect,' he said in a statement last night, adding that the proceeds were also believed to have been used in money laundering activities. He explained that to embezzle the funds, the parties involved were believed to have used professionals such as auditors, financial experts, engineers and shell companies. 'Until now, the MACC has yet to take the Tan Sri's statement as he is in a private hospital ward and today the investigating officer will get confirmation from the doctor on the status of the Tan Sri's health before recording his statement. 'Meanwhile, the number of witness statements stands at 45, and those witnesses who have given their statements have been asked to provide further statements,' he said, adding that the investigating team is also tracking down luxury vehicles and properties belonging to the Tan Sri abroad, including in London and Switzerland. The investigation is focused on the true amount of luxury liquor kept by the Tan Sri and the possibility that funds have been transferred to other accounts, he said. He added that an asset declaration notice has been handed to the Tan Sri and other related parties. — Bernama

Govt to set up task force addressing serious financial irregularities, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The government will be setting up a special task force to address serious financial irregularities to strengthen the credibility of the country's fiscal management, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a post on his social media account, he said the decision was made during the Special Cabinet Committee on National Governance (JKKTN) meeting he chaired earlier yesterday. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that the committee had taken a serious view of the audit findings on financial irregularities as they could potentially affect the credibility of the country's fiscal management.
