Wisconsin zoo: Escaped otter 'made the decision' to be wild
June 5 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin zoo announced it has called off the search for an otter on the loose since March, explaining the animal "has made the decision to be a wild otter."
The New Zoo & Adventure Park in Green Bay previously revealed two otters, Louie and Ophelia, escaped from their enclosure during a snowstorm March 20.
Ophelia was recaptured and returned to the zoo April 2, but Louie has proved to be more elusive.
"At no point during his time away has Louie been spotted (and reported to us) repeatedly in the same yard or waterway, which is what would have been required to set traps to bring him home," the zoo said on social media. "We did, however, receive enough reports of sightings in similar areas that lead us to believe that he is healthy and surviving well."
The zoo said Louie was born in the wild and is believed to have all of the skills and instincts he would need to survive on his own.
"We expect that he's doing just fine out there," the post said.
The zoo said it is working with the North American River Otter Species Survival Plan to try to find a new mate for Ophelia.

Canadian man wins his fourth major lottery prize
June 11 (UPI) -- An Alberta man scored a lottery jackpot of more than $730,000, marking his fourth major lottery prize -- and his third since August 2024. The Western Canada Lottery Corp. announced David Serkin, of Lethbridge, won a prize of $731,593.12 in the May 3 Lotto 6/49 Classic drawing. Serkin previously collected $365,796.56 in the Aug. 20, 2024, Lotto Max drawing, and an additional $731,593.12 in the Nov. 16 Lotto 6/49 drawing. The man, who has been a regular lottery player since 1982, also collected $182,898.28 from a lottery drawing more than a decade prior to his recent winning streak. Serkin said his friends and family were shocked to learn of his most recent win. "I went for coffee with the boys after I checked my ticket," he told WCLC officials. "They asked to see it and said, 'Not again!'" The player admitted even he had trouble believing his recent luck. "I know the odds are astronomical," he said. "I don't think it'll happen again, but I still like buying tickets." He said his prize money will keep his life comfortable. "I'm a cancer survivor and I'm retired, so I am just grateful for all of it," he said.

Watch: Library returns 1953 wedding photo found in book to couple's family
June 10 (UPI) -- A volunteer at a Michigan library found a wedding photo from the 1950s inside a book and the facility was able to return the precious picture to the couple's granddaughter. The Sterling Heights Public Library said on social media that the photo, labeled "Frank and Josephine Ruggirello, Nana-Nono," was found inside a tome donated to the library's Used, But Sterling Bookstore. "One of my childhood friends who I haven't spoken to in years tagged me in this post, and so I read the post from the Sterling Heights Public Library," Sarah Ruggirello told WXYZ-TV. "And she recognized my last name in it and said 'Hey, are these some family members of yours?'" Ruggirello confirmed the photo was from her grandparents' Detroit wedding on Sept. 26, 1953. Frank Ruggirello died in 2020, and Josephine died in 2023. The couple had been married for 67 years. Sarah Ruggirello said the photo is now a family treasure. "My dad and I have never seen this exact photo before. We didn't know this exact photo existed," Ruggirello said. "I think now I'm going to frame it and display it somewhere in my house just because this was such a cool story and such a cool thing that happened."
